    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for detection and recognition of multi-view faces whose location is unknown and the illumination conditions are varying. The detection of faces is accomplished after canceling the effect of the various illumination conditions by using a proposed filter. Because of the independency of the approach to skin color of face, the persons with every kind of skin colors are detected even in completely dark environments. Next, the detected faces are recognized. It is a well known technique to combine the feature based methods with the template based methods in face recognition. Our experiments show that we can combine some proposed aspects of the feature based...

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for detection and recognition of multi-view faces whose size and location is unknown and the illumination conditions are varying. The illumination is a big problem in face detection and recognition. In this paper, a new pre-processing method is proposed in order to cancel the effect of various illumination conditions on a face. Then, a binary face is obtained that its pixels are 0 or 1. Next, a fuzzy face model is produced from the distribution of zeros in the binary face. The model is used in order to detect faces in images by using a fuzzy approach. Because of the independency of the detection method to the skin color of face, persons with every kind of...

    Abstract
Machining of ceramics often involves many challenges due to their high hardness, brittleness, and low-thermal conductivity. Laser Assisted Machining (LAM) is a promising technology for improving the machinability of hard-to-cut materials. In this work, the effect of laser heating in the LAM process on Slip Cast Fused Silica (SCFS) ceramics is investigated by conducting a numerical thermal analysis of laser effects on material behavior. A transient three-dimensional heat transfer analysis for Laser Assisted Turning (LAT) of SCFS is performed using finite-element method. Temperature distributions in SCFS cylindrical specimens are obtained. Moreover, the influence of laser parameters, such as...

    Abstract
The present study investigated the effect of laser input energy on the quality and mechanical behavior of a 304 stainless steel–polyamide 6 joint in the laser-assisted metal and polymer direct joining (LAMP) method experimentally and numerically. After the proposed heat transfer model was validated, it was determined whether there was an optimal amount of laser input energy that could produce a joint with favorable quality and mechanical behavior. Among different laser input energies used in this study, 28-J/mm energy can provide more uniform and extensive wetting of the metal surface by the polymer, while excessive polymer degradation in the joint zone was prevented. As a result, an optimal...

    Abstract
Given a simple polygon P in the plane, we present a parallel algorithm for computing the visibility polygon of an observer point q inside P. We use chain visibility concept and a bottom-up merge method for constructing the visibility polygon of point q. The algorithm is simple and mainly designed for GPU architectures, where it runs in O(logn) time using O(n) processors. This is the first work on designing a GPU-based parallel algorithm for the visibility problem. To the best of our knowledge, the presented algorithm is also the first suboptimal parallel algorithm for the visibility problem that can be implemented on existing parallel architectures. We evaluated a sample implementation of...

Game theoretic analysis of self-stabilizing systems on arrays

    Abstract
Abstract: In 1973 E.W. Dijkstra introduced the notion of self-stabilization in the context of mutual exclusion. Considering the same problem on an array, we present a game theoretic analysis of self-stabilizing systems with three- or four-state machines. We give a formalized definition of the problem as a game where each player’s strategy represents the state of its corresponding machine. For the three-state case, we prove the impossibility of any infinite self-stabilizing systems on an array. For the four-state case we consider two algorithms. For Ghosh’s solution [1] we prove the upper bound of (n – 1)(n – 3) steps and that this bound is tight. Also we present another four-state...

Augmented RKPM Modeling of a Glide Edge Dislocation Near a Grain Boundary in the Framework of Surface/Interface Elasticity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Traditional continuum theory of elasticity becomes remarkably inaccurate in the vicinity of singularities, and when the size eect is of concern. For example in the study of ultra-small objects and ultra-thin lms, near defects, near point of application of a concentrated load and as such, the classical solutions are not reliable. This work focuses on determination of the elastic elds of an edge dislocation near the grain boundary of two perfectly bonded nano-size crystals. It is proposed to study this problem in the context of surface/interface elasticity, and incorporate the eect of the grain boundary on the elastic elds. In contrast to the surface/interface elasticity theory, traditional...

A Formulation for the Characteristic Lengths FCC in First Gradient Elasticity Via Sutton-Chen Potential

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tehranchi, Ali (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The  usual  continuum  theories  are  inadequate  in  predicting  the  mechanical  behavior of solids in presence of small defects and stress concentrators; it is well known that such continuum methods are unable to detect the change of the size of  the  inhomogeneities  and  defects.   For  these  reasons  various  augmented  continuum theories and strain gradient theories have been proposed in the literature. The major difficulty in implication of these theories lies in the lack of information  about  the  additional  material  constants.  For  fcc  metals,  for  calculation of the associated characteristic lengths which arise in first strain gradient  theory,  an ...

Numerical Modeling of Two Interacting Circular Holes Using a Gradient Elasticity Based Meshless Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramhormozian, Shahab (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossain (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A theory of gradient elasticity is used and numerically implemented by a meshless method that is called reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) to model size effects. Some of the problems are modeled under the consideration of gradient elasticity for the first time and all of them are also modeled with classical elasticity to compare with gradient elasticity. First of all, the RKPM formulation and computing the amount of shape functions and requisite derivatives will be explained with details and a mathematical innovation that will decrease the computational cost seriously proposed for the first time. Several 1D and 2D shape functions with first and second derivatives that are resulted...

An Atomistic Study of the Interacting Crack and Coated Inhomogeneity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghassemi, Mohsen (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Classical continuum mechanics fails to give an accurate solution near the crack tip, moreover, it implies that a solid is able to sustain an infinite stress at the Griffith-Inglis crack tips. Among other critical issues is the inability of classical approach to sense the size effect. For these reasons, for more in-depth understanding and accurate behavioral predictions, it is essential to develop some atomistic methods which properly accounts, not only for the structure but also the long and short range atomic interactions effectively. In this work the interaction of coated inhomogeneity and crack under polynomial loading is simulated by using the many body Rafii-Tabar and Sutton potential...

Plastic Analysis of a Plate Containing an Edge Notch and a Piezoelectric Patch

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghandriz, Rojin (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project the goal is to study where, when and how the cracks in the steel connection plate between beam and column initiate and how far would the crack grow before failure and how to detect crack initiation by utilizing piezoelectric sensors. In this analysis piezoelectric is placed in line of crack propagation for sensing strain and changing it to voltage. A thin plate with edge notch which is an ideal model of typical beam to column connection is assumed. The plate is subjected to a uniaxial uniform load. With the aid of ANSYS software, the plate is analyzed in both elastic and plastic stages. The strain-stress curve with kinematic hardening part is considered and modeled with...

Study of Size Effect via Strain-gradient Elasticity Based RKPM in Nano-Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arshadi, Amir (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis one of the mesh-free methods called RKPM is employed to solve the differential equations of strain-gradient elasticity. To this end the corresponding weak form is laid down. Subsequently the relevant stiffness-matrix is obtained by discretization of the weak form. To be sure about the accuracy of the relations, the problem of a plate weakened by a hole under uniform far-field tension, for which the exact solution is available in the literature, is solved. The obtained numerical result is in good agreement with the solution of Eshel and Rosenfeld. Afterwards, a plate containing a crack of finite length subjected to uniform far-field tension (mode I) is considered. This problem...

Employing Enriched Meshfree MLSRK Method to Analyze 2D Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics Problems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Namakian, Reza (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The so-called moving least square reproducing kernel method (MLSRKM), which is a meshfree Galerkin method, has two special properties in comparison with its prior version, say moving least square method (MLSM): (i) stability in preserving completeness conditions to the desired order for a discrete reproducing formula due to implementation of shifted and scaled basis, (ii) use of more accurate quadrature weights in a discrete reproducing form, especially along boundaries. However, because of employing shifted basis in MLSRKM, some of enrichment techniques, specifically in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) problems, cannot be applied to this method. Therefore, we are...

Spectral Analysis of the Elastic Fields Associated With a Spherical Multi-Inhomogeneous Inclusion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khorshidi, Alireza (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Determination of the elastic fields associated with a spherical multiply-coated inhomogeneous inclusion is a problem of great interest among researchers. In this work a set consisting of N+1 concentric spherical domains is considered. Each domain is either isotropic or spherically isotropic and is functionally graded (FG) in the radial direction. The outermost spherical surface is subjected to nonuniform loading and the constituent phases are subjected to some prescribed nonuniform body force and eigenstrain fields. When the outermost domain is an unbounded medium with zero eigenstrain and body force fields then an N-phase multi-inhomogeneous inclusion problem is realized for which the...

Buckling Analysis of Nano-Plates in the Context of Modified Couple Stress Theory Using RKPM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alemi, Bita (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, a new Kirchhoff plate model based on the modified couple stress theory has been utilized to derive the corresponding closed-form expression for the buckling load. Moreover, a numerical mesh-less method, Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM), in combination with Corrected Collocation Method (CCM) has been employed to model the nano-plate and calculate its buckling load in the framework of the modified couple stress theory. To this end, two kinds of nano-plates have been modeled, the square nano-plates with all edges simply supported 1) in the presence of the nano-void and 2) without the nano-void. It should be noted that the analytical and numerical solutions for the...
