    Adaptive control strategy for treatment of hepatitis C infection

    Abstract
    In this work, an efficient treatment strategy for hepatitis C disease using interferon (IFN) has been proposed on the basis of the back-stepping control technique. The basic model of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been considered for controller design. To tackle the problem of model parameter variations, the adaptive version of the back-stepping method has been utilized. For applying the proposed treatment, all states should be available while only the viral load is measured.     In this work, design of an observer-based nonlinear controller for a class of single input-single output (SISO) systems in the general strict feedback form subject to input saturation based on the back-stepping technique has been addressed. A full order adaptive observer is constructed to estimate the unknown states and system parameters simultaneously.     Abstract
    Aims: Our goal was the characterization of a new moderate thermophilic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-utilizing Nocardia strain. Methods and Results: A thermophilic bacterium, strain TSH1, was isolated from a contaminated soil. The macroscopic and microscopic features fit well with the description of Nocardia species. The results of 16S rRNA gene analysis showed 100% match to the type strain of N. otitidiscaviarum DSM 43242T. Strain TSH1 showed the same mycolic acid pattern as the type strain of N. otitidiscaviarum but its fatty acid profile did not permit identification to the species level.     The thermophilic bacterium Nocardia otitidiscaviarum strain TSH1, originally isolated in our laboratory from a petroindustrial wastewater contaminated soil in Iran, grows at 50 °C on a broad range of hydrocarbons. Transformation of naphthalene by strain TSH1 which is able to use this two ring-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) as a sole source of carbon and energy was investigated.     Indigenous thermophilic hydrocarbon degraders are of special significance for the bioremediation of oil-contaminated desert soils with ambient temperature of 45-50°C. The first objective of this study was to demonstrate the hydrocarbon-degrading capability of Nocardia otitidiscaviarum TSH1 (DSM 45036) which grows optimally at 50°C. Analysis of the metabolic profile of the strain TSH1 showed that it could metabolize phenol, intermediate-chain-length n-alkanes and some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) ranging in size from two to four fused rings efficiently, but not toluene and xylene.     In this paper, we investigate the CO emission from an oil refinery gas incinerator both theoretically and experimentally. At the beginning of this research, our collected data from this incinerator showed that the CO contamination would be far exceeding the permissible environmental standards at the stack exhaust. Therefore, we decided to perform a combined theoretical-experimental study to find a reasonable solution to reduce the CO pollution suitably.     A Superhydrophobic Melamine Formaldehyde Sorbent for Micro Extraction of Pollutants from Aquatic Media
