    Abstract
Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) such as sensors and actuators are rapidly gaining popularity in a variety of industrial applications. Usually these systems are constructed by a cantilever beam or plate along with a fixed substrate. The movable beam or plate deflects due to applied voltage between the plates. Pull-in voltage and contact time are the most important characteristic of these systems. Allowing the substrate to be movable in vertical direction pull-in voltage in comparison with the fixed substrate is expected to be much smaller. In this paper the pull-in voltage and the point at which pull-in takes place for a fully clamped microplate is evaluated. The nonlinear...

    Abstract
This study investigates influence of fringing field effect on the voltage dependent behavior of electrostatically actuated micro-beams. For this purpose, the size dependent beam model is used. Strain gradient formulation is utilized to consider size effects. The effect of fringing field effect on the beam's behavior is investigated and it is shown that lack of considering the fringing field effect in the formulation of the problem may lead to considerable error in predicting the size dependent micro-beams behavior under the effect of electrostatic actuation. The results of this research can be used for safe and stable design of electrostatically actuated micro-beams

    Abstract
Parallel micro actuators are mostly fabricated using the wet etching process within which the presence of capillary force and the resulting pull-in instabilities can severely affect the success of the fabrication process. In the case the capillary force is large enough then the beam like structure of the micro actuators is collapsed. The current paper investigates; static behavior of microcantilevers under effect of capillary force. It is observed that with increasing the instability number defined in the paper, the deflection of the micro-cantilevers is increased. This study shows in the wet etching fabrication process, if the distance between the beam and substrate is small enough, the...

    Abstract
In the analysis of micro structures, due to proximity of the elements Van der Waals forces plays an important role on the dynamics of the structure. In the modeling process a similar approach should be considered for the capillary effect caused by the moisture in the environment. Microplates and microbeams are used widely in the design and manufacturing of sensors and actuators. These structures are usually made of a cantilever beam or plate along with a fixed substrate. The cantilever beam usually deflects due to applied voltage. By increasing the voltage the pull-in phenomenon takes place. It is believed that the short contact time is one the important characteristic of any micro switches....

    Abstract
In this article effects of sleepers defect on rail vehicle vibration have been investigated. Two parallel rails of the track have been modeled as Euler-Bernoulli beams on elastic points as rail pads. Also sleepers have been modeled as visco-elastic Euler-Bernoulli beams. It is assumed that, some sleepers under the rail track have been fractured and modeled by two beams. The wheelset has 5 DOF which are longitudinal, vertical and lateral movements plus roll and axial rotations. To determine normal contact force between wheel and rail, relative position of wheel and rail has been determined at each instant. Using the coordinate of each wheel points in rail coordinate system, the penetration of...

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE) ; Volume 9, Issue PARTS A AND B , 2012 , Pages 129-135 ; 9780791845257 (ISBN) Taati, E ; Nikfar, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this work an analytical solution is presented for a viscoelastic micro-beam based on the modified couple stress theory which is a non-classical theory in continuum mechanics. The modified couple stress theory has the ability to consider small size effects in micro-structures. It is strongly emphasized that without considering these effects in such structures the solution will be wrong and not suitable for designing systems in micro-scales. In this study correspondence principle is used for deriving constitutive equations for viscoelastic material based on the modified couple stress theory. Governing equilibrium equations are obtained by considering an element of micro-beam. Closedform...

    Abstract
The dynamic response of a delaminated composite beam under the motion of an oscillatory mass moving with a constant velocity has been studied. The delaminated composite beam is modeled as four interconnected sub-beams using the delamination limits as their boundaries. The constrained model is used to model the delamination region. The continuity and equilibrium conditions are forced to be satisfied between the adjoining beams. A set of derived governing differential equations along with those obtained by imposing boundary conditions are simultaneously solved in a closed form manner. The results for the response of the delaminated beam were compared with those of the intact beam. Furthermore,...

    Abstract
In this paper, the nonlinear oscillation of a pendulum wrapping and unwrapping on two cylindrical bases is studied, and an analytical solution is obtained using the multiple scales method. By applying the perturbation method to the differential equation, the nonlinear natural frequency of the system is calculated, along with its time response. Analytical results are compared with numerical findings and good agreement is found. The effect of large amplitude and radius of cylinders on system frequency is evaluated. The results indicate that as the radius of the cylinder increases, the system frequency is increased....

    , Article Finite Elements in Analysis and Design ; Volume 50 , March , 2012 , Pages 1-7 ; 0168874X (ISSN) Taghvaeipour, A ; Bonakdar, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A finite element formulation is derived for the structural analysis of functionally graded hollow cylinders. The power-law distribution model is used for the composition of the constituent material in the thickness direction. According to property variation in FG cylinders, it is difficult to analyze them using the conventional element formulation. In order to facilitate the process of modeling and analyzing the FG cylinders, the finite element formulation is based on a newly designed cylindrical element. The new cylindrical element allows for property variations along the thickness, which results in considerable reduction of the required elements and eliminates the need to mesh the cross...

    Abstract
This paper deals with the problem of static instability of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and Casimir force. At the First the governing equations of the statical behavior of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and casimir force is obtained. The dependency of the critical tilting angle on the physical and geometrical parameters of the nano/micromirror and its supporting torsional beams is investigated. It is found that existence of casimir force can considerably reduce the stability limits of nano/micromirror. It is also found that rotation angle of the mirror due to capillary force highly depends on the casimir force applied to the...

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 35, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 5903-5919 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Rahaeifard, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper is devoted to investigate the nonlinear behaviors of a V-shaped microcantilever of an atomic force microscope (AFM) operating in its two major modes: amplitude modulation and frequency modulation. The nonlinear behavior of the AFM is due to the nonlinear nature of the AFM tip-sample interaction caused by the Van der Waals attraction/repulsion force. Considering the V-shaped microcantilever as a flexible continuous system, the resonant frequencies, mode shapes, governing nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations (PDE and ODE) of motion, boundary conditions, frequency and time responses, potential function and phase-plane of the system are obtained analytically. The...

    Abstract
The coupling effect between torsion and bending in nano/micromirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and van der Waals (vdW) force is presented in this paper. At the first, the dimensionless equations governing the statical behavior of the nano/micromirror are obtained using the minimum total potential energy principle. Then the equations governing the pull-in state of the mirror are obtained using the implicit function theorem. The related results show that neglecting bending effect can lead to considerable overestimation in predicting the pull-in limits of the nano/micromirror under combined vdW and capillary forces. It is observed that vdW force reduces the pull-in angle and...
