Post-Buckling Analysis of Microplates based on the Strain Gradient Elasticity Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Maboudi, Ghazale (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, the world has seen a great progress in micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). Small size, low weight, high accuracy and low energy consumption have made these devices applicable in a variety of usages. In MEMS devices, mechanical components are used for specific purposes among which one of the most widely used are micro plates. Microplates are used in the structure of many devices such as microswitchs and atomic force microscopes. Therefore, studying of static and dynamic behavior of microplates is important. As the object gets smaller (to the scale of micro and nano meters), the classic theory of mechanics of continuous media cannot predict the behavior due to its...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Taraghi Osguei, Amin (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Carbon nanoscroll (CNS) is a graphene sheet rolled into a spiral structure. The Equilibrium structure of a CNS depends on the elastic bending energy and van der Waals interactions between layers. In recent decade, research on CNSs received high attention after discovering new techniques to produce high purity CNSs. Modal analysis of the CNS is essential in various applications like sensors and actuators. Therefore, in this research, a shell model for free vibration analysis of the CNS is proposed. After considering CNS as an equivalent shell, the assumed mode technique is used to extract natural frequencies and mode shapes of CNSs in different boundary conditions. The effect of geometric...

Nonlinear Vibration Analysis of Circular Microplate Based on Strain Gradient Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghihi, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays the combination of mechanical and electronic systems in small scales is gaining attention. Micro electro-mechanical systems are widely used in various industries such as car manufacturing and electronic chips. In these devices, the most important and useful mechanical structures are beams and plates. Therefore, investigating the mechanical properties of these structures in very small scales (micro and nano) is of great importance. Decreasing the size to these scales leads to the dependence of the behavior of these structures to size. Accordingly, some theories for prediction of these behaviors have been presented, one of which is the strain gradient theory. This theory is used in...

Formulation for Mechanical Modelling of Small-Scale Micro- and Nano- Beams and Plates for Statical and Vibrational Analysis Based on the Second Strain Gradient Theory

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Momeni, Alireza (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Vatankhah, Ramin (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, the formulation of beams and plates in the micro- and nano scales is presented based on the second strain gradient theory (SSGT) introduced by Mindlin. The SSGT is a non-classical continuum theory that includes the second-order gradients of strain tensor in its formulation and this leads to more accurate modeling for mechanical behavior of materials than the strain gradient theory. On the other hand, due to the ever-increasing use of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems, analysis of the mechanical behavior of their deformable components for design and construction is of particular importance. For this purpose, analysis of Timoshenko beams and Euler-bernoulli beams made...

Also, surface-modification in Nano-particles for giving hydrophobicity...

The Analysis of Cracked Atomic Force Microscope Micro-Cantilever by Strain Gradient Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ganji, Hamid (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present study deals with the analysis of Atomic Microscope with crack by making use of Strain Gradient Elasticity theory. Empirical observations represent that in micro dimensions, materials show behaviors, which the classic continuum mechanics theories are not able to explain. Thus, taking advantage of non-classic theories, which are capable of explaining such phenomena or behaviors in analyzing materials in micro dimensions seems necessary and of much significance. In this direction, by applying an Euler-Bernoulli beam assumption and neglecting the shear effects, governing equations and boundary conditions of the problem were obtained via taking advantage of variations in Hamilton...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Delavar, Siavash (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
During the past decade, micromachining technology has become available to fabricate micron-sized mechanical parts. The miniaturization of almost all types of devices and systems is arguably a greater opportunity for commercial profit and beneficial technological advances (e.g., micromechanical, microfluidic, microthermal, micromagnetic, microoptical and microchemical). However, instead of the traditional evolutionary engineering effort to reduce size and power while simultaneously increasing the performance of such a diverse set of systems, the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) represents an effort to radically transform the scale, performance and cost of these systems by...

Vibration Analysis of Micro-Engine Rotor on the Basis of Non-classical Theories of Continuum Mechanics

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hashemi, Mehdi (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Micro-rotating machinery with compact energy sources and high power density has been developed in the recent decade to run portable electronic devices. To achieve efficiency targets, these miniaturized turbo-machinery must spin at elevated rotational speeds which sometimes can reach up to one million revolutions per minute. At this relatively high spinning rate, the rotordynamic behavior of these systems plays an important role in the stage of design. On the other hand, the classical continuum theory has been proven not to be able to appropriately predict the mechanical behavior of the small-scale structures. To overcome overall mentioned weakness, in this thesis the rotor of micro-engines...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fattahi, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A new microfluidic device is introduced for sorting the particles based on the hydrodynamic resistance induced in a microchannel which is not needed for additional detection or sorting modules. Hydrodynamic resistance affects physical properties, such as size and deformability of the particle. This device could apply application in cell sorting for remedies, diagnostics, and industrial applications. The device design is performed using an equivalent resistance model, and also numerical simulations are performed. For validation of the results, they are compared with experimental results. Moreover, we will discuss threshold particle size and will introduce a way to approximate it to ...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Turani, Amir Abbas (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, robots are become more common in many important applications, such as academic and industrial issues. One of the most important robots are Multi-Arm manipulators which are used in many application such as moving objects, coloring, automatic welding and etc. Working with this kind of robots needs some vital attentions like planning their moving path. It is Because of the large number of obstacles that they face with in the path. Therefore, not only robots are not allowed to collision with themselves, but also they must not touch the obstacles. In the other words, they need Path planning. Generally, the equations of these robots are nonlinear. Therefore, computers and numerical...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moezzi, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Naghd Abadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Mazaheri, Hashem (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this work is numerical analysis of wave propagation in earth by using spectral element method for single and multi phase with application in oil industry. In this method, numerical solution has high accuracy due to using high order polynomials and appropriate integration points. Also, the mass matrix is diagonal by using this method which results in considerable decrease in computational cost with respect to finite element method.
The wave propagation in the mentioned models is studied by many researchers. The main problem in petroleum industry is large dimension of the model which results in high computational costs. Thus, using the proper numerical approach for these...

Analysis of Forced Vibration of Micro-Plates Based On A Modified Couple Stress Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhadpur, Meraj (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vibration analysis of micro-structures has been a major topic in recent years. Among them micro-plates play an important role in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS), e.g. micropumps, micromirrors, and microresonators. Some experimental observations revealed the size-dependent mechanical behavior in micro-scaled structures. Because of the incapability of the classical continuum theory to interpret the experimentally-detected small-scale effects in mechanical behavior of micro-scaled systems, non-classical theories should be used to deal with micron and sub-micron structures. Couple stress theory is one of the non-classical theories with only one length scale parameter. A...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Masoud (Author) ; Parnianpour, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A single-degree-of-freedom model is considered for flexible exercise bars based on the lumped-element approach. By considering the side segment of a flexible exercise bar as a cantilever beam with an equivalent mass at the free end, its free-vibration response and forced one under excitation of the grip of the flexible bar is written parametrically. Some experiments are performed on a specific flexible bar to obtain numerical values for the parameters in the model to have it quantitatively known. In the next step, simulation of the model results in the response of the flexible bar under a considered excitation. The response is imported into a multi-segment musculoskeletal software, AnyBody,...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kahrobaiyan, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to importance of micro electromechanical systems (MEMS), inability of the classical continuum theory to predict the mechanical behavior of micro-scale structures accurately, and vast applications of finite element method (FEM) in modeling of the MEMS, in this dissertation, the static and dynamic mechanical behavior of electrostatically actuated micro structures has been investigated using newly developed finite elements based on strain gradient continuum theory. The governing equations and boundary conditions have been developed for longitudinal and torsional behavior of microbars as well as flexural behavior of Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko microbeams based on strain gradient...

    Abstract
In this study, the linear dynamic response of an inclined FGM Timoshenko beam on linear viscoelastic foundation subjected to a traveling mass with constant and variable velocity is investigated. Timoshenko beam theory and von-karman strain-displacement relations are utilized to model the problem. the FGM beam is made of metal and ceramic and it is assumed that material properties of the beam vary continuously in the thickness direction according to the exponential law and the power-law form. The kelvin-voigt damping model is applied to model the internal damping of the FGM beam. The partial differential equations of motion for the bending rotation of cross-section, longitudinal and...

Formulation of Geometrically Nonlinear Microbeams Based on the Second Strain Gradient Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karparvarfard, Mohammad Hassan (Author) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Vatankhah, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, the usage of beam-shaped structures has widely spread in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems; consequently, scholars are extremely interested in precise modeling of static and dynamic behaviors of them. As the beams utilized in MEMS and NEMS structures have thicknesses in the order of microns and sub-microns, the experimentally validated small scale effects would be considerable in their behavior. In fact, experiments manifest that the size-dependent behavior is an intrinsic feature of materials when they are used in small-scale structures. In the classical continuum mechanics, there exists no material length scale parameter. Thus, the classical theory is unable to capture...
