    Abstract
In this paper, pull-in behavior of cantilever micro/nano-beams made of functionally graded materials (FGM) with small-scale effects under electrostatic force is investigated. Consistent couple stress theory is employed to study the influence of small-scale on pull-in behavior. According to this theory, the couple tensor is skew-symmetric by adopting the skew-symmetric part of the rotation gradients. The material properties except Poisson’s ratio obey the power law distribution in the thickness direction. The approximate analytical solutions for the pull-in voltage and pull-in displacement of the microbeams are derived using the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Comparison between the results of the...

    Abstract
Data streams are endless flow of data produced in high speed, large size and usually non-stationary environments. The main property of these streams is the occurrence of concept drifts. Using decision trees is shown to be a powerful approach for accurate and fast learning of data streams. In this paper, we present an incremental regression tree that can predict the target variable of newly incoming instances. The tree is updated in the case of occurring concept drifts either by altering its structure or updating its embedded models. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our algorithm in speed and accuracy aspects in comparison to the best state-of-the-art methods

Tunability of terahertz random lasers with temperature based on superconducting materials

    Abstract
We theoretically demonstrate the tunabiltiy of terahertz random lasers composed of high temperature superconductor YBCO and ruby layers as active medium. The considered system is a one-dimensional disordered medium made of ruby grain and YBCO. Finite-difference time domain method is used to calculate the emission spectrum and spatial distribution of electric field at different temperatures. Our numerical results reveal that the superconductor based random lasers exhibit large temperature tunability in the terahertz domain. The emission spectrum is significantly temperature dependent, the number of lasing modes and their intensities increase with decreasing temperature. Also, we make some...

Temperature tunable random laser using superconducting materials

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 285, Issue 7 , 2012 , Pages 1900-1904 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Ghasempour Ardakani, A ; Hosseini, M ; Bahrampour, A. R ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We propose that spectral intensity of superconductor based random lasers can be made tunable by changing temperature. The two fluid model and wavelength dependent dispersion formula have been employed to describe the optical response of the superconducting materials. Random laser characteristics have been calculated using the one dimensional FDTD method. Our simulation results reveal that the emission spectrum can be manipulated through the ambient temperature of the system. It is observed that transition from metal phase to pure superconducting phase leads to the enhancement of the laser emission. Furthermore, spatial distribution of the fields in one dimensional disordered media is very...

    Abstract
TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol - gel process using 2-hydroxylethy- lammonium formate as an ionic liquid. Nanoparticles were crystallized at various temperatures (300-700°C). The products were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption - desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. It was found that the resulting TiO2 nanoparticles had good thermal stability either to resist collapse or the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation during heat treatment. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocrystalline TiO2 was evaluated by the degradation of Acid Blue 92 (AB92) which is\ commonly used as a textile dye. The results showed that the...

    Abstract
Background: Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods: For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific,...

Modeling of Series Static Voltage Restorer (SSVR) in distribution systems load flow

    Abstract
This paper presents modeling of Series Static Voltage Restorer (SSVR) in load flow calculations for steadystate voltage compensation. An accurate model for SSVR is derived to use in load flow calculations. The rating of this device as well as direction of required reactive power injection to compensate voltage to the desired value (1p.u.) is derived and discussed analytically and mathematically using pahsor diagram method. Since performance of SSVR varies when it reaches to its maximum capacity, modeling of SSVR in its maximum rating of reactive power injection is derived. The validity of the proposed model is examined using two standard distribution systems consisting of 33 and 69 nodes,...

Optimization of a/b-axis regions of YBCO thin film for sensor applications

    , Article Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences India Section A - Physical Sciences ; Volume 88, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 625-628 ; 03698203 (ISSN) Foroughi Abari, F ; Hosseini, M ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effect of substrate temperature on epitaxial growth of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x film deposited on (100) crystalline lanthanum aluminate (LAO) substrates by RF Sputtering method has been investigated. The crystal mismatch between film and substrate is about 1.6%. The sputtering was carried out in vacuum with base pressure better than 10−5 Torr and 10/20 Pa oxygen/argon partial pressures. Substrate temperature at this condition is about 730 °C based on Bormann–Hammond diagram. As well known, because of the small lattice mismatch between YBCO and LAO, fabricated thin films are not perfectly c-axis and there is tendency to form a/b-axis regions in the film. Due to substantial effects of the density and...

An in-situ infrared spectroscopic study of the adsorption of citrate on Au(1 1 1) electrodes

    Abstract
The specific adsorption of citrate from perchloric acid electrolytes, has been investigated using in-situ FTIR spectroscopy at Au(1 1 1) electrodes. For comparison IR spectra for formate adsorption are also presented. Clear voltammetric peaks have been observed positive of the pzc and these are shown by FTIR spectroscopy to be associated with the adsorption of citrate. Models for the surface co-ordination of the citrate anion are discussed. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

    Abstract
Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data....

A multi-bit error tolerant register file for a high reliable embedded processor

    Abstract
The vulnerability of microprocessors to soft errors is increasing due to continuous shrinking in fabrication process. Recent studies show that 1-5% of the SEUs (single event upset) can cause MBUs (multiple bit upsets). The probability of MBU generation due to SEU is increasing because of the reduction in minimum energy required to flip a memory bit in modern technologies. Register file is the most sensitive component in a microprocessor. In this paper, we present an innovative way to protect registers in a 64-bit register file for a RISC processor using extended Hamming (8, 4) code (SEC-DED code) and narrow-width values. A narrow-width value can be represented by half number of bits of the...

    Abstract
Since 2000, many countries have achieved considerable success in improving child survival, but localized progress remains unclear. To inform efforts towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2—to end preventable child deaths by 2030—we need consistently estimated data at the subnational level regarding child mortality rates and trends. Here we quantified, for the period 2000–2017, the subnational variation in mortality rates and number of deaths of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age within 99 low- and middle-income countries using a geostatistical survival model. We estimated that 32% of children under 5 in these countries lived in districts that had attained...

    Abstract
Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Here we present a geospatial analysis of EBF prevalence estimates from 2000 to 2018 across 94 LMICs mapped to policy-relevant administrative units (for example, districts), quantify subnational inequalities and their changes over time, and estimate probabilities of meeting the World Health...

Manganese(III) porphyrin anchored onto magnetic nanoparticles via “Click” reaction: An efficient and reusable catalyst for the heterogeneous oxidation of alkenes and sulfides

    Abstract
Oxidation of a variety of organic compounds, using Mn-porphyrin, mesotetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrinatomanganese(III), supported onto functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles via “Click” reaction has been investigated. The heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP/OES) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the prepared catalyst was thermally stable to almost 300 °C, exhibiting high thermostability of the nanocatalyst over a broad range of temperatures. This...

    Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive review of the Land subsidence (LS) cases, as a worldwide environmental, geological, and global geohazard concern. Here, 290 case studies around the world mostly conducted in large metropolitan cities (e.g. Bangkok, Beijing, California, Houston, Mexico City, Shanghai, Jakarta, and Tokyo) in 41 countries were collected. The spatial distribution of LS characteristics (e.g. intensity, magnitude, and affected area), impacts, and influential factors are scrutinized. Worldwide attempts to remedy the crisis of LS were also investigated in this review. It is shown that the coastal plains and river deltaic regions are of high-frequent subsided areas around the world...

Production of uniform size cell-enclosing silk derivative vehicles through coaxial microfluidic device and horseradish crosslinking reaction

    Abstract
Silk fibroin (SF) as a natural biopolymer holds great potential in biomedical research because of its biocompatibility, easy processability and high strength properties. However, slow gelation time has narrowed its applications, specifically in cell-laden microparticle production due to insufficient crosslinkable moieties. This study aimed to develop cell-laden silk fibroin-phenol (SF-Ph) microparticle through co-flow microfluidic system using SF conjugated Ph moieties whereas covalent crosslinking is mediated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). For this, the SF-Ph was synthesized through carbodiimide condensation crosslinking reaction. Aqueous...

Tunable bandgap opening in the proposed structure of silicon-doped graphene

    , Article Micro and Nano Letters ; Volume 6, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 582-585 ; 17500443 (ISSN) Azadeh, M. S. S ; Kokabi, A ; Hosseini, M ; Fardmanesh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A specific structure of doped graphene with substituted silicon impurity is introduced and ab initio density-functional approach is applied for the energy band structure calculation of the proposed structure. Using the band structure calculation for different silicon sites in the host graphene, the effect of silicon concentration and unit cell geometry on the bandgap of the proposed structure is also investigated. Chemically, silicon-doped graphene results in an energy gap as large as 2eV according to density-functional theory calculations. As the authors will show, in contrast to previous bandgap engineering methods, such structure has significant advantages including wide gap tuning...

The Effect of the Step Height on Energy Dissipation in Stepped Spillways Using Numerical Simulation

    , Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; Vol. 39, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 2587-2594 Attarian, A ; Hosseini, K ; Abdi, H ; Hosseini, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
From 1970s, studies have been conducted on the hydraulic design of stepped spillways and many empirical formulas were developed. Despite the simple geometry of these spillways, their hydraulic behavior is complicated. As a result, for many cases, the physical models are studied to verify the design. Numerical simulation is considered as a tool to reduce the laboratory tests, in order to save time and money. Furthermore, the parameters which are not investigated or measured in physical models could be evaluated. In this paper, the results of numerical simulations are compared with the results of physical models and empirical formulas for the spillway of Renwick dam studied in a 1/8 scale...
