Design and Characterization of Silica based Mud for Shale Drilling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farohi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ramezani Saadat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Constant drilling in the shale formation causes many problems such as shale swelling and well instability. Annually many costs are spent dealing with these problems in the drilling industry. Many factors can affect this issue. The most important factor is the type of drilling fluid and its additives. The use of oil-based mud is the best option to deal with the clays instability but, due to environmental problems resulting from OBM, their use has been banned in most parts of the world. Therefore, the water-based mud is the only option for the oil industry that can modify its property by use of additives. In this study, the muds contain Nano silica have been introduced. Silicate as shale...

Pore Network Modeling of Membrane Mass Transport for Gas Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kooti, Mina (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Bastani, Daryush (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this research is to model transport and separation of single and gas mixtures through pore network modeling in dense membranes. In the first part of the project, the mass transfer and governing mechanisms of transport are investigated. In the second part of the project, simulation of membrane pore network in 3D of Cartesian coordinate is done. In the third part of the project permeability of single gas and ideal selectivity of binary gases for an actual membrane by desired mechanism are calculated. Then the results of pore network modeling were compare with the results from molecular dynamic simulation for single gas in polyurethane membrane with reasonable agreement. In this...

Multi-Scale Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Carbonate Rock Dissolution in Acidizing Process

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahmoudi, Sadegh (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahabodin (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Raoof, Amir (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
During the Acidizing process in oil and gas reservoirs, the injected acid reacts with the rock grains, changes the rock pore structure and affects the flow conditions. Due to the presence of a large concentration gradient at the vicinity of the rock grains and the continuous changes in rock-fluid interfaces of the porous medium, the continuum assumption has been remained debatable for the effective local mass transport and effective molecular diffusion coefficients and the porosity-permeability relation in the continuum scale modeling of this process. Therefore, the need for pore scale modelling is evident. The novelty of this study relies in adapting the grid refinement method on the...

Graphene Effect on the Rheological Behaviour of Drilling Fluid

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Banaei, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ramezani Saadat, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the early 90s, nanotechnology has contributed to several developments in a wide range of Science and industry such as medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Aerospace, electronics and Biology. In recent years, nanotechnology has also made development in the oil and gas industry. The drilling fluid is already one of the most important parts in drilling operation. The physical properties of a mud, rheological properties and minimize fluid invasion into the formation with perfect mudcake are important to assist in optimizing results. Nano-materials as one of the achievements of recent years are effective in achieving these purposes. To obtain the above properties, a variety of polymers as...

MultiScale Pore Network Modeling to be Compared with Experimental Results

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Iraji, Farhad (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahab (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh, Ezatollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The study of porous media, especially in pore-scales (micro and nano scales), is of particular importance in various sciences such as petroleum engineering, chemical, and civil engineering. Determine the physics of the pore scale to understand it better, identify the conditions for it to enforce the laws better, and explain some of the phenomena unknown so far, and finally obtain the parameters performed in the laboratory for specific samples are the main goals of these studies. One of the most well-known methods for analyzing porous media is pore network modeling. These models are always affected by the macroscopic structure of porous media, such as their multiscale state. In this study, an...
