    Piloted ignition of solid fuels in turbulent back-step flows

    Piloted ignition of solid fuels in dump combustor geometry subject to an igniter hot jet plume is numerically investigated. The objective of this work is to gain insight into the fuel ignition and subsequent flame spreading in this turbulent flow configuration. Conjugate heat transfer between gas and solid phases is considered to study the solid fuel heating and evaporation process; Solid phase energy equation is simultaneously solved coupled with flow governing equations. Finite rate one step second order chemistry is used in simulations.     Slow switching and authority of self-knowledge

    Abstract
    Based on content externalism, the question of whether self-knowledge is authoritative or not has launched a real controversy in the philosophy of mind. Boghossian proposed slow switching argument in defense of incompatibility of the two views. This argument has been criticized by some philosophers through different approaches. Vahid is one of them. He claimed that Boghossian's argument appeals to some controversial assumptions without which it cannot achieve its conclusion. In this article, I criticize Vahid's response to slow switching argument and show that self-knowledge in Vahid's response differs in having authority and therefore in function from that of Boghossian

    Following Gorokhovsky and Lott and using an extension of the b-pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose, we give a formula for the Chern character of the Dirac index class of a longitudinal Dirac type operators on a foliated manifold with boundary.     Application of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) to a Uranium hexafluoride (UF 6) production process is presented in this paper. The process is constituted from three main units: UF 4 conversion to UF 6, condensation of produced UF 6 gas and tail gas treatment. Radioactive gas is present in all parts of the process and occurrence of high pressure or high temperature in the process equipments may lead to radioactive release to workplace and environment. The work is mainly based on PSA experience in nuclear power plants.     Theoretical study of borazine: cation-π (Be 2+, Mg 2+, and Ca 2+) interaction

    Abstract
    The geometries of the complexes of Be 2+, Mg 2+, and Ca 2+ metal cations with borazine ring were studied. The complexes were optimized at the B3LYP level and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Then, the interaction energies corrected by basis set super position error were calculated in the same level. The results show that interaction energy is strongly dependent on the charge-to-size ratio of the cation. Therefore, Be 2+ cation has the most interaction energy value with respect to Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ metal cations.     The leaching kinetics of an oxide gold ore with iodide/iodine solutions

    Abstract
    Two types of gold ores were subjected to iodide/iodine leaching at room temperature. The effects of three factors, including ore type (a carbonaceous and an oxide gold ores), iodide/iodine concentration, and the presence of oxygen in solution on gold leaching performance were investigated. The carbonaceous ore showed only 20% gold extraction, since gold-iodide complexes readily adsorb on organic matter. In contrast, gold extraction from the oxide ore in a solution containing 20 g/L iodide and 4 g/L iodine reached 77% in 6 h and 89% in 24 h.     Abstract
    The couple stress theory is a non-classical continuum theory which is capable to capture size effects in small-scale structures. This property makes it appropriate for modeling the structures in micron and sub-micron scales. The purpose of this paper is the derivation of the governing motion equations and boundary conditions for the geometrically nonlinear micro-plates with arbitrary shapes based on the modified version of the couple stress theory.     Abstract
    Age hardening behavior of selected samples of AEREX ™ 350, a nickel-cobalt based superalloy, was investigated in this article. The relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties was elucidated using hardness and compression testing methods and optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the microstructure is sensitive to the temperature of the solution and the aging treatments. This approach may be used to optimize the microstructure of the alloy for different applications  

    Overshoot in the step response of fractional-order control systems

    Abstract
    In this paper, a sufficient condition for existence of an overshoot in the step response of fractional-order systems is presented. Based on this condition, it can be shown that the existence of an overshoot in the step responses of some classes of fractional-order systems (for example, the class of fractional-order systems having commensurate orders between 1 and 2) is unavoidable. To show the usefulness of the obtained condition, this condition is applied to prove some results on the time response analysis of fractional-order control systems

    In this paper, we find upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the conformal class of a compact Riemannian manifold (M,g). These upper bounds depend only on the dimension and a conformal invariant that we call "min-conformal volume". Asymptotically, these bounds are consistent with the Weyl law and improve previous results by Korevaar and Yang and Yau.     The effect of calcite cementation on the mechanical behavior of gravely sands

    Abstract
    The behavior of a cemented gravely sand is studied using triaxial tests. Undrained tests were performed on saturated specimens, and stress-strain characteristics of the soil, along with volumetric and pore pressure changes, were recognized. Artificially cemented samples are prepared using calcite crystallization as the cementing agent in different percentages. The tests were done in usual range of confining pressures, from 50 to 1200 kPa. The results shows that dilation occurs even at highest confining pressure and least cement content. Also the friction angle of soils increases slightly with cement content, but cohesion intercept increasing is more noticeable

    Measurements of the electrical parameters for different water samples

    The resistance and capacitance values of the water samples are measured by using two different cell probes (length 10 cm and 5 cm) and a measuring module. Measured conductivities for the different water samples are compared where the lowest conductivity is obtained for the distilled water (3.28 μS/cm) and the highest value is for the boiled water 325.91 μS/cm. Using the measured series resistance values, and by knowing the frequency (1 kHz), the imaginary part of permittivity value is also determined.
