    Analytical closed form model for static pull-in analysis in electrostatically actuated torsional micromirrors

    Abstract
    The objective of this work is to create an analytical framework to study the static pull-in and also equilibrium behavior in electrostatically actuated torsional micromirrors. First the equation governing the static behavior of electrostatic torsion micromirrors is derived and normalized. Perturbation method, the method of straight forward expansion is utilized to find the pull-in angle of the mirror. Comparison of the presented results with numerical ones available in the literature shows that the proposed second order perturbation expansion gives very precise approximations for the pull-in angle of the mirror.     Vibratory micromachined gyroscopes use suspending mechanical parts to measure rotation. They have no gyratory component that require bearings, and for this reason they can be easily miniaturized and batch production using micromachining methods. They operate based on the energy interchange between two modes of structural vibration.     Abstract
    In MEMS gyroscopes, it is essential to use matched resonance frequencies of the drive and sense vibrational modes for improving the sensitivity. For this end, the natural frequencies can be tuned by voltages. In this study, a new model is utilized to determine the natural frequencies of the doubly clamped beam microgyroscope. In the model, nonlinear electrostatic forces, fringing fields and mid-plane stretching of thebeam are considered. The system is actuated and sensed by electrostatic force and its natural frequencies and stiffness are detuned by DC voltages.     Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) such as sensors and actuators are rapidly gaining popularity in a variety of industrial applications. Usually these systems are constructed by a cantilever beam or plate along with a fixed substrate. The movable beam or plate deflects due to applied voltage between the plates. Pull-in voltage and contact time are the most important characteristic of these systems.     Abstract
    In this paper, static behavior and pull-in of micro tweezers is studied. The micro tweezer is modelled as two cantilever beams. Static behavior of the micro tweezer under the effect of electrostatic actuation is modelled using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In order to capture size effects on the behavior of micro tweezers, modified couple stress theory is utilized. It is shown when the voltage between two electrodes increased from some specific value, micro beams adhere to each other and it is observed that the pull-in voltage predicted by the modified couple stress theory considerably differs with that of the classical theory of elasticity.     In this paper, motion of a micro-robot with two perpendicular vibrational actuators is studied. In this work, separation of the micro-robot body from the substrate of motion is modeled. If the applied vertical force to the micro-robot body is greater than its weight, body of the micro-robot jumps apart from the substrate and then returns to it.     Abstract
    In this paper we present flexible strain sensors made of graphene flakes fabricated, characterized, and analyzed for the electrical actuation and readout of their mechanical vibratory response in strain-sensing applications. For a typical suspended graphene membrane fabricated with an approximate length of 10 μm, a mechanical resonance frequency around 136 MHz with a quality factor (Q) of ∼60 in air under ambient conditions was observed. The applied strain can shift the resonance frequency substantially, which is found to be related to the alteration of physical dimension and the built-in strain in the graphene flake.     The objective of this work is to design electrostatic actuators for a CMOS-MEMS nano-newton capacitive force sensor to suppress vertical vibrations disturbances.     In this study, influences of intermolecular forces on dynamic pull-in instability of electrostatically actuated beams are investigated. Effects of midplane stretching, electrostatic actuation, fringing fields and intermolecular forces are considered. The boundary conditions of the beams are clamped-free and clamped-clamped. A finite element model is developed to discretize the governing equations and Newmark time discretization is then employed to solve the discretized equations.     Vibrations of electrostatically-Actuated microbeams are investigated. Effects of electrostatic actuation, axial stress and midplane stretching are considered in the model. Galerkin's decomposition method is utilized to convert the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation.     In this study vibration amplitude, frequency and damping of a microbeam is controlled using a RLC block containing a capacitor, resistor and inductor in series with the microbeam.     Reliability of any model-based failure detection and isolation (FDI) method depends on the amount of uncertainty in a system model. Recently, it has been shown that the use of joint torque sensing results in a simplified manipulator model that excludes hardly identifiable link dynamics and other nonlinearities such as friction, backlash, and flexibilities.     In this paper the fault-Tolerant control problem for uncertain linear systems in the presence of L, disturbances and actuator saturation is studied. The conflict between enlarging the domain of attraction and attenuating the effect of L, disturbances is tackled by proposing a non-constant state feedback controller. The feedback gains are calculated off-line by using linear matrix inequalities. In addition, the proposed method is capable of tolerating time-varying faults.     This paper considers Pressure Oscillation (PO) experiments for which we find the minimum experiment time that guarantees user-imposed parameter variance upper bounds and honours actuator limits. The parameters permeability and porosity are estimated with a classical least-squares estimation method for which an expression of the covariance matrix of the estimates is calculated.     A linear ultrasonic motor (LUSM) with an elliptical-shaped metallic stator and two orthogonal vibration modes is presented in this research.
