    Abstract
Piezoelectric transducers (sensors and actuators) are widely used to produce motion or to sense displacement. One of the most applicable types of the piezo-electric transducers is a transducer in which the piezo stacks are sandwiched between two vibrating masses by a connecting stud. These types of the piezo-electric transducers which are utilized for sensing applications are known as Tonpilz. A piezo-electric transducer is usually designed to work in the resonant frequency, and modeling and simulating its dynamics behavior to check the desired performance are very important. In this study, by considering the concept of the admittance expression, the dynamics model of a piezo-electric...

    Abstract
In flex-tensional piezoactuators, due to the low displacement of piezostacks, a compliant mechanism is used to amplify displacement of piezostack. In this paper, optimization of a compliant mechanism with corner-filleted flexure hinges is carried out using real-coded genetic algorithms (GAs) to avoid trapping in local optimums. The objective functions are displacement amplification and stiffness of mechanism and design variables are cross-sectional size and material used. The constraints which are applied on mechanism are based on piezostack dimensions and manufacturing limits. Displacement amplification and stiffness are calculated using strain energy and Castigliano's displacement theorem....

American Institute of Physics Inc  2020
    Abstract
Plasma actuator is a flow control device to improve the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blades at low airspeeds. One of the most robust numerical models for simulation of plasma actuator interaction with the fluid flow is the electrostatic model. This model is improved recently and is extensively verified by the authors. Due to the high cost of performing experimental optimizations, the optimized geometrical dimensions and materials of a plasma actuator may be sought by this numerical model. The aim of the present study is the aerodynamic enhancement of a DU21 wind turbine blade airfoil in which the effect of geometric parameters and the dielectric material is examined separately....

    Abstract
This study presents a novel method for observation of stage position in a 2D nano-positioning system based on a hybrid Kalman filter. The proposed method obviates the need to measure the stage position directly using complex and costly capacity sensors. Instead, traditional piezo actuators equipped with strain gauge sensors are utilized to measure the deection of the magnification system at the position of actuators. Then, a powerful estimation algorithm called Kalman filter was employed to observe stage displacements. The designed hybrid Kalman filter uses dynamical equations of motion in the prediction step. The piezo actuators deections are measured and exploited to correct the predicted...

    Abstract
This paper deals with event-triggered adaptive tracking control of a class of nonlinear systems with non-parametric uncertainty and unknown control input direction, in the presence of actuator faults. The proposed event-triggered control method takes advantage of the radial basis function neural networks to approximate the non-parametric uncertainties. Moreover, this control method benefits from the Nussbaum-type function-based adaptation laws for simultaneously dealing with unknown input direction and actuator faults. Numerical simulation results confirm the efficiency of the proposed control method to confront the above mentioned limitations. © The Author(s) 2021

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khatami Mazgar, Saeed (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of carbon nanotubes in Nano-switches is the new technology employed in NEMS. Nano-switches can also perform as a micro-switch where nano-switches have longer life time, consume lower power and have smaller size with respect to micro-switches. As the dimensions get smaller, continuous models lose their accuracy and molecular methods should be utilized. Non local theory, is attempting to change the responses of continuum models assuaging them to the molecular results. In the current project, non local theory is used to rewrite the governing equations of nano tubes motion and the results are compared with the classical results. In this modeling, the axial force and the mid-plane...

This thesis presents two newly designed linear motors which utilize linear electromagnet actuators in their structures. In this study nonlinear models are developed for two linear motors. Although all conditions and...

Fault Tolerant Control Considering Actuator Saturation and External Disturbances

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khatibi, Mahmood (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A control system capable of tolerating system malfunctions while maintaining an acceptable level of performance is referred as fault tolerant control system. The constraints on the amplitude of input control signals limit the domain of attraction even for linear models. Ignoring this fact may lead to an unsatisfactory performance and even closed loop instability. Designing the controller such that the domain of attraction is maximized has been an attractive topic for researchers. On the other hand, persistent disturbances always play an essential role in the real word systems. Designing the controller in a way such that the effect of such disturbances is attenuated is another challenging...

    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of van der Waals (vdW) force on the pull-in behavior of electrostatically actuated nano/micromirrors is investigated. First, the minimum potential energy principle is utilized to find the equation governing the static behavior of nano/micromirror under electrostatic and vdW forces. Then, the stability of static equilibrium points is analyzed using the energy method. It is found that when there exist two equilibrium points, the smaller one is stable and the larger one is unstable. The effects of different design parameters on the mirror's pull-in angle and pull-in voltage are studied and it is found that vdW force can considerably reduce the stability limit of the...

    Abstract
In this research, a functionally graded microbeam bonded with piezoelectric layers is analyzed under electric force. Static and dynamic instability due to the electric actuation is studied because of its importance in micro electro mechanical systems, especially in micro switches. In order to prevent pull-in instability, two piezoelectric layers are used as sensor and actuator. A current amplifier is used to supply input voltage of the actuator from the output of the sensor layer. Using Hamilton's principle and Euler-Bernoulli theory, equation of motion of the system is obtained. It is shown that the load type (distributed or concentrated) applied to the microbeam from the piezoelectric...
