    Abstract
Abstract: Using adhesively bonded composite patch repairs has been increased in various industries to improve the structural integrity of cracked metallic structures in recent decades. Monitoring of crack propagation and composite patch debonding, as two dominant failure mechanisms in this repair technique, plays a significant role in the integrity assessment of the component. This research conducts an experimental investigation on the simultaneous monitoring of these two failure mechanisms in a cracked metallic specimen repaired by a composite patch. For this purpose, the electromechanical impedance method was used to evaluate the feasibility of recognizing the type of damage at any phase...

    Abstract
A number of synthetic hydrogels suffer from low mechanical strength. Despite of the recent advances in the fabrication of tough hydrogels, it is still a great challenge to simultaneously construct high stretchability, and self-adhesive and self-healing capability in a hydrogel. Herein, a new type of double network hydrogel was prepared based on irreversible cross-linking of polyacrylamide chains and Schiff-base reversible cross-linking between glycidyl methacrylate-grafted ethylenediamine and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA). The combination of both cross-linkings and their synergistic effect provided a novel hydrogel with high strength, stretchable, rapid self-healing, and self-adhesiveness...

    Abstract
Recently, bonded composite patch repair, because of its significant advantages over traditional methods, has been highly accepted in several industries, particularly in aerospace applications. In this paper, a multi-scale finite element algorithm is proposed to simulate crack growth of repaired plates under fatigue load by considering the effects of composite micro-scale properties. The algorithm is verified through conducting an experimental set up and the proposed model is in reasonable agreement with experiments. The influences of different fiber volume fractions (VF), number of layers and fiber orientation of composite patch on the fatigue responses of adhesively bonded patch are...

    Abstract
For the first time, the UIO-66, NH2-UIO, and NH2-UIO particles covalently functionalized by Glycidyl Methacrylate (GMA@NH2-UIO), were utilized as the novel functional anti-corrosive fillers. The functionality, high surface area, phase composition, excellent thermal properties as well as chemical stability of the Zr-MOFs were proved by FT-IR, BET, XRD, TGA, and water stability tests, respectively. The smart pH-sensitive controlled-release activity of the corrosion inhibitors (i.e., Zr ions and organic compounds) from the prepared Zr-MOFs was proved by the water stability test of the Zr-MOFs particles in the acidic (pH = 2), neutral (pH = 7.5), and alkaline (pH = 12) solutions containing 3.5...

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 67 , January , 2018 , Pages 37-45 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Nikmaneshi, M. R ; Firoozabadi, B ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Interaction between intracellular dynamics and extracellular matrix (ECM) generally occurred into very thin fragment of moving cell, namely lamellipodia, enables all movable cells to crawl on ECM. In fast-moving cells such as fish Keratocytes, Lamellipodia including most cell area finds a fan-like shape during migration, with a variety of aspect ratio function of fish type. In this work, our purpose is to present a novel and more complete two-dimensional continuum mathematical model of actomyosin-cytosolic two-phase flow of a self-deforming Keratocyte with circular spreaded to steady fan-like shape. In the new approach, in addition to the two-phase flow of the F-actin and cytosol, the...

    Abstract
Endothelium is the interior layer of an artery made up of tremendous number of endothelial cells which are located side by side. Finding the effective parameters that cause the cells to obtain mechanical strength in different morphologies is a major effort in cell engineering studies. In this work a numerical model for endothelial cells is developed. This model has included cell's plasma membrane (the outer membrane of the cell), nucleus and cytoskeleton main components including intermediate and actin filaments as well as microtubules. The model has been validated by simulating the adhesion of the cells to a flat substrate and also atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. The two most...

    Abstract
Obstruction of Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD) due to thrombosis or atherosclerotic plaques is the leading cause of death world–wide. Targeted delivery of drugs through micro- Nano-particles holds noteworthy promise which can make clot busting or the restenosis treatment with minimal toxicity possible. In this work, Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations of blood flow through a patient-specific reconstructed geometry of LAD artery have been conducted using a non-Newtonian hematocrit (HCT) dependent model for blood. Based on physiological facts, 25, 45 and 65 percentages of HCT were assumed as acceptable representations of anemic, healthy and diabetic blood conditions,...

3D Modeling of Damage and Cracking in Anisotropic Concrete and its Application in Seismic Analysis of Dams

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Daneshyar, Alireza (Author) ; Ghaemian, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A finite element model for seismic analysis of concrete arch dams is proposed. Material inelasticity as well as joints nonlinearity is considered. In order to provide a precise description of concrete response, a novel plastic-damage constitutive model for plain concrete is developed. For this purpose, the microplane theory is proposed for overcoming the deficiency of available anisotropic continuum plastic-damage models in reproducing the true anisotropic nature of damage in multidimensional loadings.Based on the microplane theory, the degeneration process in concrete is considered along with plastic deformations. Using the principle of strain energy equivalence, a transformation between...

Joining of Aluminum to Polymeric Composite Using Friction Stir-Adhesive Hybrid Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shiravi Khozani, Hossein Ali (Author) ; Movahedi, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, metal-polymer dissimilar joints have attracted the attention of many industries, and the aplication of these joints in various industries such as automotive and aerospace is increasing. However, due to considerable differences in physical properties of metals and polymers, proper bonding between these materials is not easily possible, and metal-polymer joining remains one of the major challenges in the development of advanced composite structures. The adhesive/friction stir joining hybrid process is a relatively new idea that has been proposed to achieve longer lasting bonds and more safe structures. Using this process for metal-polymer joining can take advantage of both methods;...

Role of different compatibilizing approaches on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polypropylene/talc composites

    , Article AIP Conference Proceedings ; Vol. 1593, issue , 15- 19 July , 2014 , pp. 428-431 ; ISSN: 0094243X Homayounfar, S. Z ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Since in a highly filled polymer, a major problem arises from non-uniformity of properties due to the poor dispersion of filler, the application of coupling agents have been directed to overcome this problem and also to enhance the mechanical performance of the composites by improving the adhesion at the interface. In this study, a comparison between two major coupling approaches is conducted: 1) Using PPgMA as a kind of compatibilizer which changes the nature of the matrix, 2) Using titanate coupling agent which takes action at the interface and reacts with hydroxyl groups at the inorganic filler surface, resulting in the formation of monomolecular layer on the inorganic surface to increase...

    Abstract
Background: Titanium (Ti) implants are commonly coated with hydroxyapatite (HA). However, HA has some disadvantages such as brittleness, low tensile strength and fracture toughness. It is desirable to combine the excellent mechanical properties of ZrO 2 and the chemical inertness of Al 2O 3 with respect to the purpose of this project which was coating Ti implants with HA-ZrO 2-Al 2O 3 to modify the surface of these implants by adding ZrO 2 and Al 2O 3 to HA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of hydroxyapatite coating nonocomposite. Methods: From September 2009 to January2011, functionally graded HA-Al 2O 3-ZrO 2 and HA coatings were applied on Ti samples. HA-Al 2O 3-ZrO...

The effect of the physical properties of the substrate on the kinetics of cell adhesion and crawling studied by an axisymmetric diffusion-energy balance coupled model

    , Article Soft Matter ; Volume 11, Issue 18 , Mar , 2015 , Pages 3693-3705 ; 1744683X (ISSN) Samadi Dooki, A ; Shodja, H. M ; Malekmotiei, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Royal Society of Chemistry  2015
    Abstract
In this paper an analytical approach to study the effect of the substrate physical properties on the kinetics of adhesion and motility behavior of cells is presented. Cell adhesion is mediated by the binding of cell wall receptors and substrate's complementary ligands, and tight adhesion is accomplished by the recruitment of the cell wall binders to the adhesion zone. The binders' movement is modeled as their axisymmetric diffusion in the fluid-like cell membrane. In order to preserve the thermodynamic consistency, the energy balance for the cell-substrate interaction is imposed on the diffusion equation. Solving the axisymmetric diffusion-energy balance coupled equations, it turns out that...

    Abstract
The present study demonstrates HEMA-grafted nanodiamond (ND-HEMA)/acrylate-terminated polyurethane-acrylate diluents (APUA) composites as promising materials for bone implant applications. Neat APUA and APUA composites containing ND-HEMA at different loadings up to 2 wt% were prepared by an in situ polymerization method. Morphological analysis demonstrated that ND-HEMAs were actually in the form of tightly bound aggregates which led to formation of big agglomerates at a concentration of 2 wt%. It was also suggested that ND-HEMAs were preferentially localized in the continuous soft domain of APUA; however it interacted by both soft and hard domains. Moreover, ND-HEMAs caused considerable...

    Abstract
Electrospinning of biopolymers has gained significant interest for the fabrication of fibrous mats for potential applications in tissue engineering, particularly for wound dressing and skin regeneration. In this study, for the first time, we report successful electrospinning of chitosan-based biopolymers containing bacterial cellulous (33 wt %) and medical grade nanodiamonds (MND) (3 nm; up to 3 wt %). Morphological studies by scanning electron microscopy showed that long and uniform fibers with controllable diameters from 80 to 170 nm were prepared. Introducing diamond nanoparticles facilitated the electrospinning process with a decrease in the size of fibers. Fourier transform infrared...

Acoustic resonance scattering from a multilayered cylindrical shell with imperfect bonding

    , Article Ultrasonics ; Volume 49, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 682-695 ; 0041624X (ISSN) Rajabi, M ; Hasheminejad, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The method of wave function expansion is adopted to study the three dimensional scattering of a time-harmonic plane progressive sound field obliquely incident upon a multi-layered hollow cylinder with interlaminar bonding imperfection. For the generality of solution, each layer is assumed to be cylindrically orthotropic. An approximate laminate model in the context of the modal state equations with variable coefficients along with the classical T-matrix solution technique is set up for each layer to solve for the unknown modal scattering and transmission coefficients. A linear spring model is used to describe the interlaminar adhesive bonding whose effects are incorporated into the global...

    Abstract
Hydrostatic pressure is one of the most fundamental and common mechanical stimuli in the body, playing a critical role in the homeostasis of all organ systems. Kidney function is affected by high blood pressure, namely hypertension, by the increased pressure acting on the glomerular capillary walls. This general effect of hypertension is diagnosed as a chronic disease, but underlying mechanistic causes are still not well understood. This paper reports a portable and adaptive device for studying the effects of hydrostatic pressure on a monolayer of cells. The fabricated device fits within a conventional incubation system and microscope. The effects of various pressures and durations were...
