A Dynamic Programming Approach for Network Air Cargo Revenue Management

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aref Kashfi, Samin (Author) ; Modarres, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research aims to establish a novel approach to meet the capacity utilization challenge of the freight forwarders in order to maximize the expected revenue in a cargo network. The two-dimensional cargo capacities are assumed to be stochastic and limited in each leg. A stochastic dynamic programming model is developed to demonstrate the maximization of expected revenue over a finite planning horizon, in which each fare class request is to be either accepted or rejected. Although the main problem is computationally intractable due to multidimensional state variable, it can be decomposed into one-dimensional capacity control sub-problems for each leg. A heuristic algorithm is developed to...

Flight Dynamic Modeling of an Articulated FMAV Using Quasi Steady Aerodynamics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghashghaei, Arash (Author) ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis is focused on flight dynamics modeling and analysis of an articulated Flapping Micro Air Vehicle (FMAV), where the articulating joint is placed near the wing mid chord span. The articulation modeling, its results and verification due to added degrees of freedom are considered the key motivation and novelties of this project. Initial analyses indicated that a simple articulation device such as joint is not appropriate and will not be efficient for flying FMAV. As a corrective action, a spring-damper mechanism was utilized beside the articulation. Subsequently, the kinematics’ equations are developed and verified using the MSC Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alizadeh Ardaji, Masoud (Author) ; Banazadeh, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the two rigid body modelling of a Coanda air vehicle (one rigid includes rotor and propeller and the second rigid includes the other parts of it) has been developed using Newton’s and Euler’s laws, and its motion was simulated in climb and forward flight conditions. Air vehicle propulsion force and moment have been modelled by employing the blade element momentum theory. In order to model the forces acting on the air vehicle, the drag force has been estimated by the results of analytical and computational fluid dynamics methods for the case of climb flight and by using experimental data of a cylindrical body for the forward flight. For modelling the control surfaces of this...

Design Optimization of Pouring basin in the Shape Casting Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zohrevand, Milad (Author) ; Davami, Parviz (Supervisor) ; Tavakoli, Rohollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The pouring basin is a main part in the gating system. The formation of a vortical flow is a big problem occurs during the discharge of melt from the pouring basin. The vortex formation can enter the floating slag and inclusion into the mold. In the case that the vortex is more stronger, a fully air core to the sprue forms and leads to entraining of the air to the mold. These phenomena can decrease the casting quality significantly. Therefore preventing of the vortex is necessary to produce a sound cast. In this study the mechanism of vortex formation is investigated and several solutions are presented to avoid its detrimental effects. For this purpose discharge of a tank is simulated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Doozandegan Hokmabad, Mahdi (Author) ; Hosseini, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Iran’s big cities air pollution is one of the major challenges to authorities in view of public health. Tehran City has been facing more and more air quality problems over the last decade. The criteria pollutants in Tehran are PM2.5, PM10. Particulates and especially ultrafine particles have been identified as the most toxic component of the polluting mixture. Considering diesel engine operation concepts, these types of engines are one of the main source emission of ultrafine particles, with more than 58%, in Tehran. So controlling particulates emitted from these sources, is one of the first steps to improve air quality. Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are well-known and effective way to...

Unified Optimization in Air Traffic Flow Management Problem Under Uncertainties

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari Pour, Bahareh (Author) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reviewing the literature on air traffic flow management shows that reducing flight delay is one of the main challenges facing air transportation systems. This is due to the high cost of incurring delays. At the first stage, two mixed integer-programming model is presented here that aims to minimize delay cost of air traffic. The first presented model seeks to minimize flights delay costs by choosing an optimal airport configuration and balancing departure and arrival flights and the second presented model solve this problem with the new approach with categorizing the airplane by types and prioritizing them. Numerical examples are solved in CPLEX 12.6 to evaluate models performance. Numeric...
