Requirement Management Fundamentals for an Air Transport Fleet to Investigate and Improve Airport Runway Saturation Points

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemzadeh, Alireza (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Air transport system of each country consists of three interconnected elements (players); namely (1) Airlines, (2) Airports and (3) Air-Traffic Control. Any increase in the air transport capacity requires consistent growth in each sector. Obviously, any player can start such a process, but cannot continue without proper contribution of the other two. In this work, we study the process of growth capacity increase in the air-transportation system with an emphasis on the Airline characteristics. We show how the growth of an independent Airline will lead to the condition for which any subsequent investment will not have any effect on the quality of services provided by the system. We refer to...

Aging aircraft cost analysis using system dynamics modeling

    , Article 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2014 ; 7-12 September , 2014 ; ISBN: 3932182804 Fouladi, E ; Shadaab, N ; Abedian, A ; Tanara, A. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ways to reduce an airline's cost has been studied for years. In fact, in order to achieve this goal, ones need to know different types of airline's costs including; fuel and oil, maintenance, Ticketing, passenger services, etc. and their impact on the total cost of an airline. According to announcement of ICAO [1], "maintenance cost (about 11% of total cost) is the second major cost after fuel and oil". Therefore, this may attract airline owners' attention to find ways to control maintenance cost and eventually the total cost of an airline. Though, there are many systematic approaches to analyze cost reduction and making policies, in this article, SD modeling is applied to develop a...

A fuzzy programming approach for dynamic virtual hub location problem

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 36, Issue 7 , 2012 , Pages 3257-3270 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Taghipourian, F ; Mahdavi, I ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Makui, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Hub location problem has been used in transportation network to exploit economies of scale. For example, a controversial issue in the planning of air transportation networks is inclement weather or emergency conditions. In this situation, hub facilities would not be able to provide a good service to their spoke nodes temporarily. Thus, some other kinds of predetermined underutilized facilities in the network are used as virtual hubs to host some or all connections of original hubs to recover the incurred incapacitation and increase network flexibility and demand flow. In such an unexpected situation, it is not unreasonable to expect that some information be imprecise or vague. To deal with...

Accounting for systematic influences on preference heterogeneity in air travel

    , Article Transportation Research Record ; Issue 2300 , 2012 , Pages 147-154 ; 03611981 (ISSN) Rezaei, A ; Puckett, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Modeling passengers' itinerary choice behavior helps in understanding the increasingly competitive airline market and in predicting air travel demand. Recently, investigation of the variation in passengers' preferences with regard to factors influencing their choice through estimation of the mixed multinomial logit model has received attention. An extended form of the model identifies sources of heterogeneity and consequently makes the choice models less restrictive in considering both systematic and random preference variation across individuals. This research investigates the existence of significant interactions between passengers' preference heterogeneity around the mean of random...

Aircraft terrain following flights based on fuzzy logic

    , Article Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology ; Volume 83, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 94-104 ; 00022667 (ISSN) Rahim, M ; Malaek, S. M.- B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a novel approach in terrain following (TF) flight using fuzzy logic. The fuzzy controller as presented in this work decides where and how the aircraft needs to change its altitude. The fast decision-making nature of this method promises real-time applications even for tough terrains in terms of shape and peculiarities. The method could always assist to design trajectories in an off-line manner. Design/methodology/approach - To achieve the aforementioned goal, the method effectively incorporates the dynamics of the aircraft. Basically, the mathematical method employs special relationships among existing slope of the terrain and its derivative...
