    A harmonic termination technique for single-and multi-band high-efficiency class-F MMIC power amplifiers

    Abstract
    This paper presents a harmonic termination technique for single-and multi-band high-efficiency class-F monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) power amplifiers (PAs). The harmonic termination network (HTN), realized with the minimum possible number of elements, can be used to terminate an arbitrary number of harmonics in a single-band PA or harmonics of multiple frequencies in a concurrent multi-band PA. The drain and gate bias lines are embedded in the HTNs to obviate the need for RF chokes and reduce the chip area.     Abstract
    A technique for simultaneous cancellation of noise, second-order distortion and third-order distortion in CMOS LNAs is presented. The proposed LNA topology consists of a matching stage and two common-source amplifier stages, performing single-ended to differential signal conversion with balanced output. The second and third-order nonlinearity of the individual amplifiers as well as the distortion caused by the interaction between the stages are suppressed to achieve high IIP3. A method for intrinsic cancellation of the second-order interaction is employed to reduce the dependence of the IIP3 on the frequency spacing between the interfering signals in the two-tone test. © IEICE 2009

    In this paper, we present a thorough analysis based on photon-counting techniques on temporal/spatial fiber-optic code-division multiple-access systems incorporating both post- and pre-optical amplifiers. In this analysis, we consider the effect of shot noise, thermal noise, and source extinction on system bit-error rate. Our results can be used to estimate the maximum tolerable amount of quantum fluctuations in the received signal

    Abstract
    A PC-based digital lock-in amplifier was implemented completely in software (Labview) for photoplethysmograph (PPG) measurement. Experiments carried out to evaluate the performance of the amplifier show that the system can recover the signals up to 40 dB below the interference (ambient light). This system can be customized later to measure the trans-abdominal PPG signal of pregnant women for fetal heart rate detection. ©2007 IEEE

    This paper presents the design procedure of monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) high-power amplifiers (HPAs) as well as implementation of high-efficiency and compact-size HPAs in a 0.25-μm AlGaAs-InGaAs pHEMT technology. Presented design techniques used to extend bandwidth, improve efficiency, and reduce chip area of the HPAs are described in detail. The first HPA delivers 5 W of output power with 40% power-added efficiency (PAE) in the frequency band of 8.5-12.5 GHz, while providing 20 dB of small-signal gain.     This paper presents a design methodology for class-J monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) power amplifiers (PAs). Theoretical derivations of optimum load impedances, output power, efficiency, and maximum bandwidth are described in presence of nonlinear drain-source resistance of transistors (RDS). A procedure is developed for ideal transistor sizing where transistors are concurrently stabilized and sized to achieve the maximum power-added efficiency (PAE).     Abstract
    In this brief, a design technique for tapered distributed low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) is presented. A circuit model is developed for gain and noise analysis of a nonuniform distributed amplifier (DA). It is shown that by optimal tapering of gate and drain transmission lines and transistors, the tapered distributed LNA can provide lower broadband average noise figure (NF) compared to a uniform DA. A proof-of-concept integrated circuit is implemented using a 0.1-μm GaAs pHEMT process. The amplifier provides average gain of 15.2 dB and 3-dB bandwidth of 43.3 GHz.     This paper presents a design procedure for a wideband 6-18-GHz monolithic microwave integrated circuit highpower amplifier (HPA) in 0.25-μm AlGaAs-InGaAs pHEMT technology. The design is mainly focused on the realization of the passive circuits to provide the required low-loss and wideband impedance transformation networks.     This paper presents an unilateralization technique for distributed amplifiers (DAs) based on the transformer coupling between the gate and drain lines. Theoretical analysis of the DA indicates that the voltage waves in the gate and drain lines can be described by a system of linear partial differential equations. The transformer coupling between the lines allows for cancellation of the reverse transmission coefficient of the system.     This paper presents two wideband GaAs MMIC driver power amplifiers (PAs) suitable for X and Ku bands. The required number of stages and number of branches in each stage for an M-stage driver PA architecture is analyzed. Design of wideband matching networks for monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) driver PAs is explained and design parameters of a cascaded K-section T matching network (MN) are derived.
