A new model for predicting activity coefficients in aqueous solutions of amino acids and peptides

    , Article Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics ; Volume 35, Issue 1 , 2003 , Pages 101-112 ; 00219614 (ISSN) Mortazavi Manesh, S ; Ghotbi, C ; Taghikhani, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
A new two-parameter model based on the perturbation of a hard-sphere reference has been developed to correlate the activity coefficients of several amino acids and simple peptides in aqueous solutions. The hard-sphere equation of state used as the reference in the model was proposed recently by Ghotbi and Vera. The perturbation terms coupled with the reference hard-sphere equation of state are attributed to the dispersion forces and the dipole-dipole interactions. The Lennard-Jones and Keesom potential functions are used to represent the dispersion and dipole-dipole interactions, respectively. The results of the new model are compared with those obtained by other models. It is shown that the...

    Abstract
Precipitation and scaling of calcium sulfate have been known as major problems facing process industries and oilfield operations. Most scale prediction models are based on aqueous thermodynamics and solubility behavior of salts in aqueous electrolyte solutions. There is yet a huge interest in developing reliable, simple, and accurate solubility prediction models. In this study, a comprehensive model based on least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) is presented, which is mainly devoted to calcium sulfate dihydrate (or gypsum) solubility in aqueous solutions of mixed electrolytes covering wide temperature ranges. In this respect, an aggregate of 880 experimental data were gathered from...

Removal of zirconium from aqueous solution by Aspergillus niger

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 772-780 ; ISSN: 10263098 Kalantari, H ; Yaghmaei, S ; Roostaazad, R ; Mohammad-Beigi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Removal of zirconium from its dilute aqueous solution using Aspergillus niger as a dried and living biomass was investigated. Through that, the effect of some operational parameters on biosorption, including pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration of zirconium and dose of biomass, were studied. Based on the results, it was concluded that the uptake of zirconium by both dried and living biomasses is pH dependent, and maximum uptake was observed in pH = 3.1 for both biomasses. The maximum uptake capacity of the living biomass was obtained at 30°C. However, the biosorption of zirconium by dried biomass was not affected by temperature. The maximum uptake capacity for living and...

Calcium chloride adsorption at liquid-liquid interfaces: A molecular dynamics simulation study

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 527 , 2017 , Pages 70-80 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Khiabani, N. P ; Bahramian, A ; Chen, P ; Pourafshary, P ; Goddard, W.A., III ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We carried out molecular dynamics simulations (MD) to investigate the adsorption of calcium chloride (CaCl2) at n-hexane-water interfaces. We also measured the interfacial tensions (IFT) of the selected systems making use of the pendant-drop method. The histograms of hexane, water, and the ions indicate an electrical double layer (EDL) near the interface. The trend of the EDL indicates that chloride anions intend to adsorb to the interface more intrinsically than calcium cations. The measured interfacial width of the n-hexane-water interfaces decreases with the salt concentration. The average densities of the interfacial and bulk aqueous solutions demonstrate density heterogeneity in the...
