    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 229, Issue 9 , 2018 , Pages 3869-3884 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Borjalilou, V ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer-Verlag Wien  2018
    Abstract
Thermoelastic damping (TED) is one of the main energy dissipation mechanisms in structures with small scales. On the other hand, the classical continuum theory is not capable of describing the mechanical behavior of small-scale structures. In this paper, small-scale effects on the thermoelastic damping in microplates are studied. To this end, the coupled governing equations of motion and heat conduction are obtained based on the non-classical continuum theory of the modified couple stress and the dual-phase-lag heat conduction model. By solving these coupled equations, an explicit expression including small-scale effects for calculating TED in microplates is derived. The results are compared...

    , Article Journal of Thermal Stresses ; Volume 42, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 801-814 ; 01495739 (ISSN) Borjalilou, V ; Asghari, M ; Bagheri, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this article, the size-dependent behavior of micro-beams with the thermoelastic damping (TED) phenomenon is studied. The coupled thermoelasticity equations are derived on the basis of the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat conduction model. By solving these coupled equations simultaneously, a closed-form expression for the TED parameter in micro-beams is presented which considers the small-scale effects incorporation. Then, the effect of various parameters on TED in micro-beams, such as micro-beam height, the type of material, boundary conditions, and aspect ratio is investigated. The results show that the influence of utilizing non-classical continuum and...

    Abstract
The small-scale effects on the thermoelastic damping (TED) in Euler-Bernoulli micro-beams is investigated in this study. To this purpose, by utilizing the strain gradient theory (SGT) and the dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat conduction model, the coupled equations of motion and heat conduction are derived. By solving these equations simultaneously and using the Galerkin method, the real and imaginary parts of the frequency and the amount of TED in thin micro-beams are obtained. The results predicted by SGT are compared with those given by the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the classical continuum theory. In addition, TED is calculated on the basis of energy dissipation approach which...

    Abstract
Due to the important role of surface-related properties of NPs in their biological behavior, simple and fast methods that could precisely demonstrate accurate information about NPs' surface, structure and morphology are highly desirable. In this study a set of surface morphological nano-descriptors (size, shape, surface area, agglomeration state, curvature, corner count and aspect ratio) have been defined and extracted from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images of nanoparticles (NPs) by Digital Image Processing methods. The extracted data represent a thorough description of the surface and morphologies of NPs lying beyond their TEM images and can supply the data required for a...

Viscous damping effect on the aeroelastic stability of subsonic wings: Introduction of the U–K method

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 73 , 2017 , Pages 1-15 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Beheshtinia, F ; Dehghani Firouz Abadi, R ; Rahmanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study aims at introduction of a novel method for evaluating the effect of viscous damping on the aeroelastic stability boundaries. The K-method is well-known for being one of the fastest methods in determining the instability conditions (i.e. critical speed and its corresponding frequency). However, formulation of the K-method is developed for aeroelastic systems without viscous damping and solution is valid where the introduced artificial damping is zero. Taking into account the framework of the K-method in general, this study has tried to remove the major shortcoming of the K-method, i.e. investigation of the effect of viscous damping on the aeroelastic stability boundaries. The...

    Abstract
Resistive pulse sensing (RPS) has proved to be a viable method for the detection and characterization of micro and nano particles. Modern fabrication methods have introduced different nanopore geometries for resistive pulse sensors. In this paper, we have numerically studied the effects of membrane thickness and the pore's cone angle, as the main geometrical parameters, on the sensing performance of the nanopores used for nanoparticle detection in the resistive pulse sensing method. To compare the sensing performance, three resistive pulse quality parameters were investigated-sensitivity, pulse duration and pulse amplitude. The thorough investigation on the relations between the geometrical...

    Abstract
The graphene-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst has been used to prepare ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/graphene oxide (UHMWPE/GO) nanocomposite via in situ polymerization. The morphological investigations have been conducted using X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy method. The obtained results indicated that no diffraction peak is detected in a GO pattern, which could be due to the exfoliation of graphene nanosheets in the UHMWPE matrix. Morphological investigations indicated that GO nanosheets are dispersed almost uniformly in polymeric matrix, and that there should exist a good interaction between nanofillers and matrix. The mechanical properties of the...

    , Article Journal of Separation Science ; Vol. 37, issue. 15 , August , 2014 , pp. 1982-1988 ; ISSN: 16159306 Bagher, H ; Piri-Moghadam, H ; Rastegar, S ; Taheri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide was employed as a metal oxide sol-gel precursor to prepare ceramic composite nanofibers by the electrospinning system. To facilitate this process and obtain the desired nanofibers with higher aspect ratios and surface area, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) was added to the sol of titania. Four ceramic nanofibers sheets based on titania were prepared while each sheet contained different transition metals such as Fe-Mn, Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, and Fe-Mn-Co-Ni. The scanning electron microscope images showed good homogeneity for all the prepared ceramic composites with a diameter range of 100-250 nm. The sorption efficiency was investigated by a micro-solid-phase extraction setup in...

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 517, Issue 5 , 1 January , 2009 , Pages 1736-1739 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Azarian, A ; Iraji Zad, A ; Dolati, A ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The Co nanowire arrays were synthesized by electrodeposition in polycarbonate template (PC) with 4 μm thickness. Electron field emission properties of cobalt nanowires were studied for wires with different aspect ratios, R ranged between 10 and 60, while the diameter of wires was fixed about 50 nm. The field emission properties of the samples showed low turn on electric field (Eto) with values varying between 2.9 and 11.3 V/μm showing a minimum value for R = 20 (Eto < 3 V/μm). On the other hand, the enhancement factor shows a peak for nanowires length about 1 μm. Field emission data using the Fowler-Nordhiem theory showed nearly straight-line nature confirming cold field emission of...

    Abstract
The theoretical need to recognize the link between the basic microstructure of nonlinear porous materials and their macroscopic mechanical behavior is continuously rising owing to the existing engineering applications. In this regard, a semi-analytical homogenization model is proposed to establish an overall, continuum-level constitutive law for nonlinear elastic materials containing prolate/oblate spheroidal voids undergoing finite axisymmetric deformations. The microgeometry of the porous materials is taken to be voided spheroid assemblage consisting of confocally voided spheroids of all sizes having the same orientation. Following a kinematically admissible deformation field for a...

    Abstract
In this study six Cold-Formed Steel shear wall (CFS) with one and two side steel sheeting are tested under reversed cyclic loading. Besides, thirteen numerical models are simulated, using nonlinear finite element method, and analyzed under monotonic pushover loading. The studied parameters are the comparison of one and two side steel sheeting, the nominal thickness of steel sheet and boundary elements, and height to width aspect ratios of the wall. The performance of tested specimens is investigated in terms of lateral load-story drift response, failure modes and ultimate strength of shear walls. Based on AISI S213 the available strength of two-sided steel-sheathed walls is cumulative but...

Nonlinear dynamics of extensible viscoelastic cantilevered pipes conveying pulsatile flow with an end nozzle

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 91 , 2017 , Pages 22-35 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Askarian, A. R ; Haddadpour, H ; Dehghani Firouz Abadi, R ; Abtahi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Nonlinear dynamics of an extensible cantilevered pipe conveying pulsating flow is considered in this paper. The fluid flow fluctuates harmonically and exhausts via a nozzle attached to the end of the pipe. Taking into account the extensibility assumption, the coupled nonlinear lateral–longitudinal equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle and discretized via Galerkin's method. The adaptive time step Adams algorithm is applied to extract the time response, and then the bifurcation, power spectral density and phase plane maps are plotted for some case studies. Effects of some geometrical parameters such as flow mass, pulsating flow frequency, gravity, nozzle mass and nozzle...

On the static and dynamic stability of thin beam conveying fluid

    , Article Meccanica ; Volume 54, Issue 11-12 , 2019 , Pages 1847-1868 ; 00256455 (ISSN) Askarian, A. R ; Abtahi, H ; Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, numerical investigation of the statical and dynamical stability of aligned and misaligned viscoelastic cantilevered beam is performed with a terminal nozzle in the presence of gravity in two cases: (1) effect of fluid velocity on the flutter boundary of beam conveying fluid and (2) effect of gravity on the buckling boundary of beam conveying fluid. The beam is assumed to have a large width-to-thickness ratio, so the out-of-plane bending rigidity is far higher than the in-plane bending and torsional rigidities. Gravity vector is considered in the vertical direction. Thus, deflection of the beam because of the gravity effect couples the in-plane bending and torsional equations....

Dynamic instability of cantilevered composite pipe conveying flow with an end nozzle

    Abstract
In this paper, the instability of cantilevered horizontal composite pipes is investigated. To this aim, the lateral flow forces are modelled as a distributed lateral force and the nozzle effect is modelled as a compressive axial follower force and a concentrated end mass. The coupled bending-torsional equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principal and Galerkin method. In order to obtain the stability margin of the pipe, the standard Eigen value problem is solved. Finally, effects of elastic coupling parameter and nozzle aspect ratio are considered on the stability margin of the pipe and some conclusions are drawn

    Abstract
This paper introduces a probabilistic framework to quantify the spatial distribution of cracking and crushing in rectangular reinforced concrete shear walls at different drift ratios. In this research, a comprehensive probabilistic spatial analysis is conducted on an extensive collected database of reinforced concrete shear walls tested under the quasi-static cyclic loading. The database includes 235 images of 72 damaged walls with various geometry and material properties at different drift ratios between 0.0 and 4.0%. Various image processing filters are implemented to the images to highlight the wall areas that are more prone to cracking and crushing. Then, advanced statistical analysis is...

    Abstract
Nanostructured AA6063 (NS-Al) powder with an average grain size of ~100. nm was synthesized by high-energy attrition milling of gas-atomized AA6063 powder followed by hot extrusion. The microstructural features of the consolidated specimen were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques and compared with those of coarse-grained AA6063 (CG-Al) produced by hot powder extrusion of gas-atomized powder (without using mechanical milling). The consolidated NS-Al alloy consisted of elongated ultrafine grains (aspect ratio of ~2.9) and equiaxed nanostructured grains. A high fraction (~78%) of high-angle grain boundaries with average...
