    Abstract
During the recent decade, high induction diffusers have become more appealing in applications which require relatively high ventilation airflow rates, such as clean rooms. In this research, the effect of geometric parameters on the performance of a specific type of swirling air diffuser is investigated numerically. The results show that although the diffuser slots geometry, namely their angle and aspect ratio, is impressive on the diffuser performance, it is not as important as the swirling blade angle and the performance is almost constant in a wide range of slots specifications. The results also demonstrate that the diffuser performance and the resultant indoor airflow distribution highly...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of increasing the number of layers on improving the thermal performance of microchannel heat sinks is studied. In this way, both numerical and analytical methods are utilized. The analytical method is based on the porous medium assumption. Here, the modified Darcy equation and the energy balance equations are used. The method has led to an analytical expression presenting the average dimensionless temperature field in the multilayer microchannel heat sink. The effects of different parameters such as aspect ratio, porosity, channel width, and the solid properties on the thermal resistance are described. The results for single layer and multilayer heat sinks are...

Coanda surface geometry optimization for multi-directional co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring

, Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo: Power for Land, Sea, and Air ; Volume 5 , 2009 , Pages 183-189 ; 9780791848869 (ISBN) Saghafi, F ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The performance of Co-flow fluidic thrust vectoring is a function of secondary flow characteristics and the fluidic nozzle geometry. In terms of nozzle geometry, wall shape and the secondary slot aspect ratio are the main parameters that control the vector angle. The present study aims to find a high quality wall shape to achieve the best thrust vectoring performance, which is characterized by the maximum thrust deflection angle with respect to the injected secondary air. A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is employed to investigate the flow characteristics in thrust vectoring system. This model is validated using experimental data collected from the deflection of exhaust gases of...

    Abstract
Multiscale finite volume (MSFV) method have been developed and applied in various complicated physics. The most important advantage of MSFV method is its computational efficiency. In this paper we present a new set of boundary condition for calculation of basis and correction functions which leads to further reduction in computational time in problems with medium heterogeneity and therefore improves computational efficiency. In standard MSFV (sMSFV) method reduced boundary condition is used to determine the basis and correction functions which is based on local information, however in modified MSFV (mMSFV) method global information is used at initial time for constructing boundary condition...

Effect of anisotropy on the scaling of connectivity and conductivity in continuum percolation theory

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 81, Issue 6 , June , 2010 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Sadeghnejad, S ; Masihi, M ; King, P. R ; Shojaei, A ; Pishvaei, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
We investigate the effects of anisotropy on the finite-size scaling of connectivity and conductivity of continuum percolation in three dimensions. We consider a system of size X×Y×Z in which cubic bodies of size a×b×c are placed randomly. We define two aspect ratios to request anisotropy then we expect that the displacement of average connected fraction P (averaged over the realizations), about the isotropic universal curves will be a function of the two aspect ratios. This is accounted by considering an apparent percolation threshold in each direction which leads to 50% of realizations connecting in that direction. We find the aspect ratios' dependency of the apparent threshold and...

Buoyancy effects on gaseous slip flow in a vertical rectangular microchannel

    , Article Microfluidics and Nanofluidics ; Vol. 16, issue. 1-2 , 2014 , pp. 207-224 ; ISSN: 16134982 Sadeghi, M ; Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Consideration is given to the buoyancy effects on the fully developed gaseous slip flow in a vertical rectangular microduct. Two different cases of the thermal boundary conditions are considered, namely uniform temperature at two facing duct walls with different temperatures and adiabatic other walls (case A) and uniform heat flux at two walls and uniform temperature at other walls (case B). The rarefaction effects are treated using the firstorder slip boundary conditions. By means of finite Fourier transform method, analytical solutions are obtained for the velocity and temperature distributions as well as the Poiseuille number. Furthermore, the threshold value of the mixed convection...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 29, Issue 12 , 2017 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Moosavi, A ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Semi-analytical solutions are obtained for the electrical potential, electroosmotic velocity, ionic conductance, and surface physicochemical properties associated with long pH-regulated nanochannels of arbitrary but constant cross-sectional area. The effects of electric double layer overlap, multiple ionic species, and surface association/dissociation reactions are all taken into account, assuming low surface potentials. The method of analysis includes series solutions which the pertinent coefficients are obtained by applying the wall boundary conditions using either of the least-squares or point matching techniques. Although the procedure is general enough to be applied to almost any...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 29, Issue 6 , 2017 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Infinite series solutions are obtained for electrical potential, electroosmotic velocity, ionic conductance, and surface physicochemical properties of long pH-regulated rectangular nanochannels of low surface potential utilizing the double finite Fourier transform method. Closed form expressions are also obtained for channels of large height to width ratio for which the depthwise variations vanish. Neglecting the Stern layer impact, the effects of EDL (Electric Double Layer) overlap, multiple ionic species, and association/dissociation reactions on the surface are all taken into account. Moreover, finite-element-based numerical simulations are conducted to account for the end effects as well...

Unsteady solute dispersion by electrokinetic flow in a polyelectrolyte layer-grafted rectangular microchannel with wall absorption

    Cambridge University Press  2020
    Abstract
The dispersion of a neutral solute band by electrokinetic flow in polyelectrolyte layer (PEL)-grafted rectangular/slit microchannels is theoretically studied. The flow is assumed to be both steady and fully developed and a first-order irreversible reaction is considered at the wall to account for probable surface adsorption of solutes. Considering low electric potentials, analytical solutions are obtained for electric potential, fluid velocity and solute concentration. Special solutions are also obtained for the case without wall adsorption. To track the dispersion properties of the solute band, the generalized dispersion model is adopted by considering the exchange, the convection and the...

Numerical modeling of surface reaction kinetics in electrokinetically actuated microfluidic devices

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Vol. 838, issue , August , 2014 , pp. 64-75 ; ISSN: 00032670 Sadeghi, A ; Amini, Y ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We outline a comprehensive numerical procedure for modeling of species transport and surface reaction kinetics in electrokinetically actuated microfluidic devices of rectangular cross section. Our results confirm the findings of previous simplified approaches that a concentration wave is created for sufficiently long microreactors. An analytical solution, developed for the wave propagation speed, shows that, when normalizing with the fluid mean velocity, it becomes a function of three parameters comprising the channel aspect ratio, the relative adsorption capacity, and the kinetic equilibrium constant. Our studies also reveal that the reactor geometry idealized as a slit, instead of a...

Joule heating effects in electrokinetically driven flow through rectangular microchannels: An analytical approach

    , Article Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering ; Volume 17, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 173-193 ; 15567265 (ISSN) Sadeghi, A ; Kazemi, Y ; Saidi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This is a theoretical study dealing with mixed electroosmotic and pressure-driven flow of a Newtonian liquid in a rectangular microchannel. Both and thermal boundary conditions are considered and the Debye-Hückel linearization is invoked. The governing equations are made dimensionless assuming fully developed conditions and then analytically solved using an infinite series solution. The governing factors are found to be the dimensionless Debye-Hückel parameter, velocity scale ratio, dimensionless Joule heating parameter, and channel aspect ratio. The results indicate that the Nusselt number is an increasing function of the channel aspect ratio, whereas the opposite is true for the velocity...

Variational formulation on Joule heating in combined electroosmotic and pressure driven microflows

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 61, Issue 1 , June , 2013 , Pages 254-265 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Waezi, Z ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The present study attempts to analyze the extended Graetz problem in combined electroosmotic and pressure driven flows in rectangular microchannels, by employing a variational formulation. Both the Joule heating and axial conduction effects are taken into consideration. Since assuming a uniform inlet temperature profile is not consistent with the existence of these effects, a step change in wall temperature is considered to represent physically conceivable thermal entrance conditions. The method of analysis considered here is primarily analytical, in which series solutions are presented for the electrical potential, velocity, and temperature. For general treatment of the eigenvalue problem...

    Abstract
In the present work, the second law of thermodynamics analysis has been carried out for steady state hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed laminar gas flow in annulus microchannels with asymmetrically heated walls. The rarefaction effects are taken into consideration using first order slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. Viscous heating is also included for both the hot wall and the cold wall cases. Using the velocity distribution obtained in earlier works, the energy equation is solved to get analytically the temperature distribution and consequently to compute the entropy generation rate. The effects of rarefaction and the annulus geometrical aspect ratio on...

    Abstract
This study deals with the geometrically non-linear vibration analysis of concrete shallow funicular shells of rectangular plan with four clamped edges under impulse loads. The shape of a concrete funicular shell is such that the shell is subjected to pure compression under its dead weight. Following the existing method presented for the linear vibration analysis, the geometrically non-linear vibration analysis is considered through the use of non-linear shallow shells theory. Each displacement component is expanded in a double Fourier series and the kinetic energy, the elastic strain energy and the virtual work done by external forces are calculated in terms of the displacement components....

    Abstract
The network structure of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) in the presence of carbon black (CB) with two different structures and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated. Swelling behaviour, tensile properties at various strain rates and cure kinetics were characterized. Experimental data were analysed using the Flory-Rehner model as well as the tube model theory. It is found that the network structure of CB-filled SBR follows a three-phase composite model including rigid particles, semi-rigid bound rubber and matrix rubber. This bound rubber is postulated to be critical for the mechanical and deformational properties, development of crosslinking density in matrix rubber and...

The attempts were made to examine reinforcing mechanism of these two different classes of carbon nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy and electrical conductivity measurement were used to investigate morphology. Tensile, cyclic tensile and stress relaxation analyses were performed. A modified Halpin-Tsai model based on the concept of an equivalent composite particle, consisting of rubber bound, occluded rubber and...

Steel plate shear walls having door openings with different arrangements of stiffeners

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2222-2235 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Rostami, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
As steel plate shear walls are typically used in the building central cores around the elevators and stairs, introduction of an opening as door seems to be inevitable in steel plate shear wall spans. Due to the weakening of the steel plate shear walls’ performance caused by this particular type of opening, the use of stiffeners around the opening is necessary. Nevertheless, introduction of stiffeners around all sides of the opening, which does continue to boundary elements, is very expensive and inefficient. Therefore, the study on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel plate shear walls is significant. In this research, a number of steel plate shear...

Primary breakup dynamics and spray characteristics of a rotary atomizer with radial-axial discharge channels

    Abstract
An experimental investigation of primary breakup dynamics and spray characteristics of a rotary atomizer with high aspect ratio radial-axial discharge channel is described. A high-resolution shadow imaging technique with pulsed backlight illumination was used for spray visualization. For the rotary atomizer with high aspect ratio discharge channel and radial-axial orientation, visualization showed the occurrence of Centripetal–Coriolis-induced stream-mode injection for all operating conditions. In this mode of injection, a crescent liquid film forms in the channel exit and issues from the orifice as a liquid column or a thin liquid sheet depending on atomizer operating conditions. It was...
