, Article 2010 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Smart Solutions for a Changing World, 19 April 2010 through 22 April 2010 ; 2010 ; 9781424465477 (ISBN) Kazemi, S ; Lehtonen, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Distribution automation application for fault management in the electricity distribution networks is one of the main potential remedial actions to reduce customers' outage times and hence improve service reliability. For this purpose, various automation schemes have been developed and introduced in different countries and by different venders. However, the challenge for electric utilities, especially in today's competitive electricity market, is to identify and evaluate potential reliability reinforcement schemes. Accordingly, appropriate schemes must be determined and prioritized for implementation. In this context, reliability cost/worth assessment plays an important role. A comprehensive...

    , Article Urban Rail Transit ; Volume 5, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 186-201 ; 21996687 (ISSN) Lee, Y. J ; Meskar, M ; Nickkar, A ; Sahebi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Berlin Heidelberg  2019
    Abstract
Although demand responsive feeder bus operation is possible with human-driven vehicles, it has not been very popular and is mostly available as a special service because of its high operating costs due to intensive labor costs as well as requirement for advanced real-time information technology and complicated operation. However, once automated vehicles become available, small-sized flexible door-to-door feeder bus operation will become more realistic, so preparing for such automated flexible feeder services is necessary to take advantage of the rapid improvement of automated vehicle technology. Therefore, in this research, an algorithm for optimal flexible feeder bus routing, which...

    Abstract
Modal identification is a type of system identification, which studies on the modal parameters of systems by using modal test. In the case of using operational or ambient modal analysis, there is no need to measure excitation, and the system output data are adequate for identification purposes. These modal parameters of system are of great importance from the engineering point of view particularly in the area of system identification, damage detection, and condition monitoring. In a fully-automated identification approach, the modal parameters are extracted without intervention of a specialized user. In this study, a Fully Automated Operational Modal Identification algorithm is developed to...

    Abstract
One of the main requisites for multi agent researchers is a multi-purpose infrastructure that enables them to create, test and evaluate protocols, methods and algorithms. RoboCupRescue simulation environment is a flexible and configurable environment that can fill this gap. With changes in its configuration files, it will gain different features, so different methods can be designed, implemented, and tested. This environment is actually suitable for most multi-agent research issues such as cooperation, coordination, agent communication languages, and agent micro level issues. Sensible roles and tasks in the system motivate more research and make this environment a suitable infrastructure for...

Dynamics Modeling and Control of Mooring Lines While Cargo Vessels Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasa, Roya (Author) ; Sayyadi, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
large ships should only make very small horizontal movements at the berth for efficient loading. This is especially a concern in ports facing the open ocean directly, where high swells at sea can cause harbor oscillations and low-frequency surge motions of the ship. A developed mooring unit, the MoorMaster, which replaces conventional mooring lines is addressed here. The hydraulics of the system have a strong reducing effect on the motions of the moored ship. Measurements have shown that the surge motion of container ships was reduced from an amplitude in the order of 1 metre to an amplitude in the order of 5 centimetres, by using MoorMaster units. In here MoorMaster action is divided to two...

Integrated Planning for Distribution Automation and Network Capacity Expansion

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Heidari, Saeed (Author) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Implementing distribution automation system (DAS) in distribution networks needs a huge investment which usually cannot be funded entirely in a short period of time. So distribution companies (DISCOs) should develop long term plans to equip their network with automation technologies as far as economically justifiable. Similarly, DISCOs have network capacity expansion (NCX) plans which specify the scheme of construction of feeders and substations. Since considering DAS may lead to more efficient NCX plans, the planner should revise the NCX plan through the DAS planning. On the other hand, for DAS planning it is necessary to consider a NCX plan as a platform to determine the time and location...

Motion Control of Two Magnetic Microrobots

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefi, Masoud (Author) ; Nejat, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Microrobots have the potential to access small spaces for manipulation or for acting as a sensor. Magnetic microrobots are the most common types of microrobots. Magnetic microrobots have gained particular traction for medical applications due to safety of tissues. For instance, disease diagnosis, minimally invasive surgery and cell manipulation are potential applications of magnetic microrobots. The performance of a single microrobot could be improved by using multiple robots. For example each microrobot could carry a small payload to a goal inside a microfluidic channel, or could assemble fast and in parallel. In order to employ multiple robots, it is necessary to control each microrobot...

Shortcut Cryptanalysis of Symmetric Block Ciphers (Focusing on Differential and Impossible-Differential Cryptanalysis of ARX Ciphers)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Azimi, Arash (Author) ; Salmasizadeh, Mahmoud (Supervisor) ; Mohajeri, Javad (Supervisor) ; Aref, Mohammad Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we analyze the security of symmetric block ciphers using shortcut cryptanalysis, mainly focusing on differential and impossible-differential cryptanalysis. The contributions of this thesis are twofold. First, we evaluate the security of 4 notable block ciphers named TEA, XTEA, Midori, and HIGHT using ad-hoc impossible-differential cryptanalysis in single-key settings. For each cipher, we introduce new impossible differentials in single-key settings, which are later used in the cryptanalysis. The results show that for all of the mentioned block ciphers, we are able to analyze the longest reduced-round versions of them in contrast to each of the previously mounted single-key...

Distribution network expansion planning considering distribution automation system

    , Article IET Conference Publications ; Vol. 2013, issue. 615 CP , 2013 Heidari, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Kazemi, S ; Maslehati, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Planning of distribution networks is usually accomplished using a cost-based conventional model that minimizes the total cost of construction and reinforcement of substations and feeders. The resulted expansion plan designed by this cost-based model is not necessarily the best choice for an electrical distribution company (DISCO) in the nowadays deregulated structure. This happening is mainly due to the fact that the utility seeks to maximize its profit in this competitive environment. On the other hand, this model does not consider the upcoming new challenges ahead of distribution systems, such as smart grid and distribution automation technologies. This paper presents a novel profit-based...

Fetal R-wave detection from multichannel abdominal ECG recordings in low SNR

, Article Proceedings of the 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society: Engineering the Future of Biomedicine, EMBC 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 344-347 ; 1557170X (ISSN) Kharabian, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sameni, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Abdominal recordings of fetal ECG (fECG) have lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as compared with invasive procedures. In this paper we have combined two previously proposed methods, one for extracting fECG, called piCA and the other, a transformation based on Hilbert transform to enhance the R-peaks. The combination of these methods seems to work well in situations of noisy data and fetal repositioning. Also a comparison is done by using ICA in order to extract the fetal signals. Performance of both methods is studied separately. Results show that applying the transformation on the components extracted with the use of piCA (after maternal ECG cancellation), had a very good performance. Also,...

    Abstract
Fault indicator (FI) plays a crucial rule in enhancing service reliability in distribution systems. This device brings substantial benefits for fault management procedure by speeding up fault location procedure. This paper intends to develop a new optimization model to optimally deploy FI in distribution systems. The proposed model aims to consider a tradeoff between the total customer interruption cost and FI relevant costs, including capital investment, installation, and maintenance costs. As the main contribution of this paper, the problem is formulated in mixed integer programing, which guarantees global optimum solution achieved in an effective runtime. Moreover, the model takes...

    Abstract
Today, the Internet is used to offer different services to users. Most of these services are designed for human users, but unfortunately some computer programs are designed which abuse these services. CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart) systems are designed to automatically distinguish between human users and computer programs and block such computer programs. Most of current CAPTCHA methods are using visual patterns and hence blind users cannot use them. In this paper, we propose a new CAPTCHA method which is designed for blind people. In this method, a small sound clip is played for the user and he/she is asked to say a word. Then the user...

Impacts of automatic control systems of loop restoration scheme on the distribution system reliability

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 3, Issue 10 , 2009 , Pages 891-902 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Kazemi, S ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sanaye Pasand, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Loop restoration scheme (LRS) is a special feeder automation (FA) scheme, which is used by utilities to improve distribution system reliability. The LRS is controlled and managed by its automatic control system (ACS). The impacts on distribution system reliability indices of implementing LRS mainly depend on the type of its ACS. Two common types of ACS of LRS are presented and used in this study. Successful operation of ACS is dependent on the protection and automatic control functions of switching devices of LRS. Different failure modes of these switching devices can therefore affect the procedure of ACS in fault detecting, isolating and service restoration. The impacts of failure of...
