Linear and non-linear vibration and frequency response analyses of microcantilevers subjected to tip-sample interaction

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 45, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 176-185 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Delnavaz, A ; Mahmoodi, S. N ; Jalili, N ; Zohoor, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Despite their simple structure and design, microcantilevers are receiving increased attention due to their unique sensing and actuation features in many MEMS and NEMS. Along this line, a non-linear distributed-parameters modeling of a microcantilever beam under the influence of a nanoparticle sample is studied in this paper. A long-range Van der Waals force model is utilized to describe the microcantilever-particle interaction along with an inextensibility condition for the microcantilever in order to derive the equations of motion in terms of only one generalized coordinate. Both of these considerations impose strong nonlinearities on the resultant integro-partial equations of motion. In...

On the assessment of modal nonlinear pushover analysis for steel frames with semi-rigid connections

    , Article Structural Engineering and Mechanics ; Volume 32, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 383-398 ; 12254568 (ISSN) Zarfam, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Applying nonlinear statistical analysis methods in estimating the performance of structures in earthquakes is strongly considered these days. This is due to the methods' simplicity, timely lower cost and reliable estimation in seismic responses in comparison with time-history nonlinear dynamic analysis. Among nonlinear methods, simplified to be incorporated in the future guidelines, Modal Pushover Analysis, known by the abbreviated name of MPA, simply models nonlinear behavior of structures; and presents a very proper estimation of nonlinear dynamic analysis using lateral load pattern appropriate to the mass. Mostly, two kinds of connecting joints, 'hinge' and 'rigid', are carried out in...

Laser irradiation for controlling size of TiO2-Zeolite nanocomposite in removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid herbicide

    , Article Water Science and Technology ; Volume 80, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 864-873 ; 02731223 (ISSN) Abdollah, F ; Borghei, S. M ; Moniri, E ; Kimiagar, S ; Panahi, H. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    IWA Publishing  2019
    Abstract
This study focused on the synthesis of TiO2-Zeolite nanocomposite through a sol-gel approach. The decrease in the size of the nanocomposite is considered a primary parameter to improve photocatalytic activity. In this regard, fabricated samples were exposed to laser irradiation (532 nm) for four different time intervals in order to investigate the size variation of the nanocomposite. FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, DLS, SEM and EDX analyses were applied to characterize and determine the size of the products. An optimized nanocomposite sample, in term of the particle size, was used for photodegradation of 2,4-D herbicide from aqueous solution. Photodegradation was carried out under UV irradiation (12 W)...

Innovative method in seismic design of slab-on-girder steel bridges

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 64, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 1420-1435 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Lotfollahi, M ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Most slab-on-girder steel bridges have been designed and constructed without seismic resistance consideration; as a result, their members, connections, and more commonly their substructure are not sized and detailed to provide the required ductile response needed during major earthquakes. A ductile seismic retrofit solution proposed in this investigation consist of converting of existing end diaphragms into ductile end diaphragms and replacing the end cross-frames and the lower lateral-braced panels adjacent to the supports by special ductile diaphragms. Consequently, this creates ductile fuses to protect the rest of the super- and substructure. This paper illustrates the typical seismic...

Mechanical properties of concrete containing a high volume of tire-rubber particles

    , Article Waste Management ; Volume 28, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 2472-2482 ; 0956053X (ISSN) Khaloo, A. R ; Dehestani, M ; Rahmatabadi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Due to the increasingly serious environmental problems presented by waste tires, the feasibility of using elastic and flexible tire-rubber particles as aggregate in concrete is investigated in this study. Tire-rubber particles composed of tire chips, crumb rubber, and a combination of tire chips and crumb rubber, were used to replace mineral aggregates in concrete. These particles were used to replace 12.5%, 25%, 37.5%, and 50% of the total mineral aggregate's volume in concrete. Cylindrical shape concrete specimens 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height were fabricated and cured. The fresh rubberized concrete exhibited lower unit weight and acceptable workability compared to plain concrete....

Nonlinear aeroelastic response of slender wings based on Wagner function

    , Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 46, Issue 11 , 2008 , Pages 1192-1203 ; 02638231 (ISSN) Shams, Sh ; Sadr Lahidjani, M. H ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This paper presents a method for nonlinear aeroelastic analysis of Human Powered Aircraft (HPA) wings. In this type of aircraft there is a long, highly flexible wing. Wing flexibility, coupled with long wing span can lead to large deflections during normal flight operation; therefore, a wing in vertical and torsional motion using the second-order form of nonlinear general flexible Euler-Bernoulli beam equations is used for structural modeling. Unsteady linear aerodynamic theory based on Wagner function is used for determination of aerodynamic loading on the wing. Combining these two types of formulations yields the nonlinear integro-differentials aeroelastic equations. Using the Galerkin's...

    Abstract
The paper presents the experimental and analytical model analysis of a steel-girder arch bridge. The field test is carried out by ambient vibration testing under traffic excitations. Both the peak picking method in the frequency domain and the stochastic subspace identification method in the time domain are used for the output-only model identification. A good agreement in identified frequencies has been found between the two methods. It is further demonstrated that the stochastic subspace method provides better mode shapes. The three-dimensional finite element models are constructed and an analytical model analysis is then performed to generate natural frequencies and mode shapes in the...

A state-of-the-art review of the fabrication and characteristics of titanium and its alloys for biomedical applications

    , Article Bio-Design and Manufacturing ; Volume 5, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 371-395 ; 20965524 (ISSN) Sarraf, M ; Rezvani Ghomi, E ; Alipour, S ; Ramakrishna, S ; Liana Sukiman, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract: Commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys have been among the most commonly used materials for biomedical applications since the 1950s. Due to the excellent mechanical tribological properties, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties of titanium, it is getting much attention as a biomaterial for implants. Furthermore, titanium promotes osseointegration without any additional adhesives by physically bonding with the living bone at the implant site. These properties are crucial for producing high-strength metallic alloys for biomedical applications. Titanium alloys are manufactured into the three types of α, β, and α + β. The scientific and clinical...
