Optimizing multi-item multi-period inventory control system with discounted cash flow and inflation: Two calibrated meta-heuristic algorithms

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 37, Issue 4 , 2013 , Pages 2241-2256 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Mousavi, S. M ; Hajipour, V ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Alikar, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A mixed binary integer mathematical programming model is developed in this paper for ordering items in multi-item multi-period inventory control systems, in which unit and incremental quantity discounts as well as interest and inflation factors are considered. Although the demand rates are assumed deterministic, they may vary in different periods. The situation considered for the problem at hand is similar to a seasonal inventory control model in which orders and sales happen in a given season. To make the model more realistic, three types of constraints including storage space, budget, and order quantity are simultaneously considered. The goal is to find optimal order quantities of the...

    Abstract
Visual tracking has attracted a significant attention in the last few decades. The recent surge in the number of publications on tracking-related problems have made it almost impossible to follow the developments in the field. One of the reasons is that there is a lack of commonly accepted annotated data-sets and standardized evaluation protocols that would allow objective comparison of different tracking methods. To address this issue, the Visual Object Tracking (VOT) workshop was organized in conjunction with ICCV2013. Researchers from academia as well as industry were invited to participate in the first VOT2013 challenge which aimed at single-object visual trackers that do not apply...

A novel heuristic filter based on ant colony optimization for non-linear systems state estimation

    , Article Communications in Computer and Information Science, 27 October 2012 through 28 October 2012 ; Volume 316 CCIS , October , 2012 , Pages 20-29 ; 18650929 (ISSN) ; 9783642342882 (ISBN) Nobahari, H ; Sharifi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A new heuristic filter, called Continuous Ant Colony Filter, is proposed for non-linear systems state estimation. The new filter formulates the states estimation problem as a stochastic dynamic optimization problem and utilizes a colony of ants to find and track the best estimation. The ants search the state space dynamically in a similar scheme to the optimization algorithm, known as Continuous Ant Colony System. The performance of the new filter is evaluated for a nonlinear benchmark and the results are compared with those of Extended Kalman Filter and Particle Filter, showing improvements in terms of estimation accuracy

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 90, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 956-972 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Boozarjomehry, R. B ; Laleh, A. P ; Svrcek, W. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Synthesis of the optimum distillation column sequence (DCS), which incorporates a huge search space composed of both conventional and complex arrangements, is a highly complicated combinatorial problem in the field of chemical process design and optimisation. In this study, a novel procedure for the synthesis of optimum DCS proposed by Boozarjomehry et al. [Boozarjomehry et al., Can. J. Chem. Eng. 87, 477-492 (2009)] is expanded to include the complex distillation arrangements. The method is based on evolutionary algorithms, and the total annual cost (TAC) is the main criterion used to screen alternatives. Efficient procedure has been proposed for encoding mechanism to include and classify...

A two-step watermarking attack using long-range correlation image restoration

    , Article Security and Communication Networks ; Volume 5, Issue 6 , AUG , 2012 , Pages 625-635 ; 19390122 (ISSN) Taherinia, A. H ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper presents an efficient scheme for blind watermark attacking using the concept of matching of the long-range data. The main idea of the proposed attack is to add plenty of noise to the watermarked image and then try to restore an unwatermarked copy of the noisy image. The aim is to destroy the watermark information without accessing the parameters used during the watermark embedding process. So, it allows our approach to be completely free from any pre-assumption on the watermarking algorithm or any other parameters that is used during the watermark embedding procedure. Experimental results show the proposed algorithm's superiority over several other traditional watermarking...

A strategic management model for evaluation of health, safety and environmental performance

    , Article Environmental Monitoring and Assessment ; Volume 184, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 2981-2991 ; 01676369 (ISSN) Abbaspour, M ; Toutounchian, S ; Roayaei, E ; Nassiri, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Strategic health, safety, and environmental management system (HSE-MS) involves systematic and cooperative planning in each phase of the lifecycle of a project to ensure that interaction among the industry group, client, contractor, stakeholder, and host community exists with the highest level of health, safety, and environmental standard performances. Therefore, it seems necessary to assess the HSE-MS performance of contractor(s) by a comparative strategic management model with the aim of continuous improvement. The present Strategic Management Model (SMM) has been illustrated by a case study and the results show that the model is a suitable management tool for decision making in a contract...

A consistent and fast weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics with a new wall boundary condition

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids ; Volume 68, Issue 7 , May , 2012 , Pages 905-921 ; 02712091 (ISSN) Fatehi, R ; Manzari, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A modified weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (WCSPH) is presented, which utilizes consistent discretization schemes for spatial derivatives in the flow equations. Here, each SPH particle is considered as a computational point that represents a specific part of the fluid. To overcome non-physical oscillations that usually arise in standard WCSPH, we modified the mass conservation equation by using a numerical filter. This modification is based on the difference between two discretization schemes used for the term ∇{dot operator}∇Pρ. Furthermore, a new implementation of wall boundary condition in SPH is introduced. This condition is imposed on the pressure of wall boundary...

Using partial tag comparison in low-power snoop-based chip multiprocessors

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 19 June 2010 through 23 June 2010 ; Volume 6161 LNCS , June , 2012 , Pages 211-221 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 9783642243219 (ISBN) Shafiee, A ; Shahidi, N ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work we introduce power optimizations relying on partial tag comparison (PTC) in snoop-based chip multiprocessors. Our optimizations rely on the observation that detecting tag mismatches in a snoop-based chip multiprocessor does not require aggressively processing the entire tag. In fact, a high percentage of cache mismatches could be detected by utilizing a small subset but highly informative portion of the tag bits. Based on this, we introduce a source-based snoop filtering mechanism referred to as S-PTC. In S-PTC possible remote tag mismatches are detected prior to sending the request. We reduce power as S-PTC prevents sending unnecessary snoops and avoids unessential tag lookups...

A new hybrid approach for dynamic continuous optimization problems

    , Article Applied Soft Computing Journal ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 1158-1167 ; 15684946 (ISSN) Karimi, J ; Nobahari, H ; Pourtakdoust, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A new hybrid approach for dynamic optimization problems with continuous search spaces is presented. The proposed approach hybridizes efficient features of the particle swarm optimization in tracking dynamic changes with a new evolutionary procedure. In the proposed dynamic hybrid PSO (DHPSO) algorithm, the swarm size is varied in a self-regulatory manner. Inspired from the microbial life, the particles can reproduce infants and the old ones die. The infants are especially reproduced by high potential particles and located near the local optimum points, using the quadratic interpolation method. The algorithm is adapted to perform in continuous search spaces, utilizing continuous movement of...

An optimal procedure for minimizing total weighted resource tardiness penalty costs in the resource-constrained project scheduling problem

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 62, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 264-270 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Ranjbar, M ; Khalilzadeh, M ; Kianfar, F ; Etminani, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We present an optimal solution procedure for minimizing total weighted resource tardiness penalty costs in the resource-constrained project scheduling problem. In this problem, we assume the constrained renewable resources are limited to very expensive equipments and machines that are used in other projects and are not available in all periods of time of a project. In other words, for each resource, there is a dictated ready date as well as a due date such that no resource can be available before its ready date but the resources are permitted to be used after their due dates by paying penalty cost depending on the resource type. We also assume that only one unit of each resource type is...

Characterizing the Role of Shale Geometry and Connate Water Saturation on Performance of Polymer Flooding in Heavy Oil Reservoirs: Experimental Observations and Numerical Simulations

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 91, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 973-998 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Masihi, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many heavy oil reservoirs contain discontinuous shales which act as barriers or baffles to flow. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding about how the shale geometrical characteristics affect the reservoir performance, especially during polymer flooding of heavy oils. In this study, a series of polymer injection processes have been performed on five-spot glass micromodels with different shale geometrical characteristics that are initially saturated with the heavy oil. The available geological characteristics from one of the Iranian oilfields were considered for the construction of the flow patterns by using a controlled-laser technology. Oil recoveries as a function of pore...

Operand Width Aware Hardware Reuse: A low cost fault-tolerant approach to ALU design in embedded processors

    , Article Microelectronics Reliability ; Volume 51, Issue 12 , December , 2011 , Pages 2374-2387 ; 00262714 (ISSN) Fazeli, M ; Namazi, A ; Miremadi, S. G ; Haghdoost, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a low cost fault-tolerant technique so called OWHR (Operand Width Aware Hardware Reuse) to ALU design in embedded processors. The OWHR technique is motivated by two facts: (1) Many of the produced and consumed values are narrow-width values in the embedded processors, i.e. they have leading zeros or ones in their most significant bits. This indicates that only a fraction of the circuit is performing useful operations when a particular arithmetic or logic circuit in the ALU is operating on narrow-width values; (2) other circuits of the ALU are not used, when a particular arithmetic or logic circuit is being utilized to perform a specific operation in the ALU in the...

    EWA: An exemplar-based watermarking attack

    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, we used image inpainting as a means for reconstruction of small damaged portions of a watermarked image so that the hidden watermark is not detectable afterwards. Our new watermarking attack algorithm extends the exemplar-based inpainting method, and then we apply it to intended noisy watermarked images to alter the watermark detection process. Our approach is completely free from any pre-assumption on the watermarking algorithm or any other parameters that is used during the watermark embedding procedure. The average PSNR/SSIM of the watermarked image after applying the proposed attack is more than 35/0.98 and the average NC for extracted watermark is lowers than 0.5, so...

    Abstract
A study of events with missing transverse energy and an energetic jet is performed using pp collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36pb-1. An excess of these events over standard model contributions is a signature of new physics such as large extra dimensions and unparticles. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the prediction of the standard model, and significant extension of the current limits on parameters of new physics benchmark models is achieved

Integration of clustering analysis and reward/penalty mechanisms for regulating service reliability in distribution systems

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 5, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 1192-1200 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Mohammadnezhad Shourkaei, H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Billinton, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study proposes an approach for improving service reliability in the distribution network based on establishing competition among electric distribution utilities. The idea behind this approach is to categorise the utilities and compare the performance of utilities located in one cluster with the other members of the same cluster. The reward/penalty mechanism (RPM) as a quality regulating instrument is designed for each cluster and used to penalise the utilities with a performance worse than the benchmark and to reward them for providing a performance better than the benchmark. Based on the RPM, utilities located in one cluster compete to make more profit by serving customers in better...

    Abstract
Today, research on automatic text summarization challenges on readability factor as one of the most important aspects of summarizers' performance. In this paper, we present Pazesh: a language-independent graph-based approach for increasing the readability of summaries while preserving the most important content. Pazesh accomplishes this task by constructing a special path of salient sentences which passes through topic centroid sentences. The results show that Pazesh compares approvingly with previously published results on benchmark datasets

    Abstract
There is a substantial body of empirical literature that establishes the benefits of customer satisfaction for enterprises. Among different available options to present our service, selecting the best choice in the customers' eyes is a vital decision. Developing appropriate passenger train schedules is counted as one of the major managerial concerns in transportation environment. Although different algorithms have been developed to create predictive schedules for a fleet of passenger trains using different performance indicators, selecting the best one embraces some ambiguities and uncertainties. That is because a one-dimensional objective function may not be sufficient for responding...

Blind dewatermarking method based on wavelet transform

    , Article Optical Engineering ; Volume 50, Issue 5 , 2011 ; 00913286 (ISSN) Taherinia, A. H ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Along with the improvement of image watermarking techniques, the necessity for effectively and comprehensively evaluating various algorithms becomes imperative. In this paper, we first propose a new categorization that fits for most of the existing watermarking algorithms that work in the wavelet domain. Then an adaptive watermarking attack for evaluating the robustness of watermarking schemes that are based on the proposed categorization is presented. This attack determines the flat regions, edges, and textures of the watermarked image and based on known features of each region the proposed attack tries to destroy the watermark information. This is done by separately manipulating the...

Predictive tri-linear benchmark curve for in-plane behavior of adobe walls

    Abstract
In the present study, numerical simulations are conducted to estimate the in-plane response of adobe walls subjected to pseudo-static cyclic loading based on the finite element code ABAQUS. The simplified micro-modeling approach is adopted and an interface model reported in ABAQUS material library is applied as material model for zero-thickness interface elements. The comparison between obtained results and field test data results in good agreement. Parametric studies are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of independent parameters changes on response of adobe walls. It is noted that mechanical properties of joints and adobe units play an active role on in-plane behavior of walls. A...

On the spatiotemporal correlations in a linear stochastic field generated by non-interacting particles: Theory

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 85 , November , 2015 , Pages 1226-1238 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Ayyoubzadeh, S. M ; Vosoughi, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Many of the physical macroscopic quantities could be explained as the result of a collection of microscopic particles which act independent of each-other, in a linear fashion. Since the physical laws of the interaction of these particles with their surrounding medium are non-deterministic, one could think of these particles as the generators of a linear stochastic field. In this paper, we have introduced a derivation which has yielded an equation for the spatiotemporal correlations in such a field. The derivation is simple and extendable to include the behavior of many physical particles. A simple numerical algorithm has been devised to solve the obtained initial value integrodifferential...
