Development of Fragility Curves for Short and Mid-Rise RC Buildings Retrofitted with Steel Knee Braces Based on Incremental Dynamic Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keipour, Nicka (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
All buildings should be designed to bear both gravity loads and lateral loads such as earthquake. Resisting system for earthquake can be moment resisting frame, shear wall, brace or combination of them. Normally for strengthening of reinforce concrete buildings, shear wall should be added, but in some cases after constructing RC buildings, engineers find out that building does not have enough strength against seismic loads. In this case, adding shear wall is difficult because of architectural restrictions and assembling braces on the original frame is easier.
Structural engineers always looking to find a structural element to absorb earthquake energy to prevent potential damages of other...

Investigating Layout of Shear Walls in Tall Buildings with Non-Symmetrical Plan

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kabir, Minoo (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In tall buildings, seismic behavior depends on structural elements and their configuration. The usefulness of shear walls in the structural planning of multistory buildings has long been recognized. When walls are situated in advantageous positions in a building, they can be very efficient in resisting lateral loads originating from wind or earthquakes. Restriction in surrounding effects and the architectural design may contribute to have asymmetry in plan. In a number of papers, published mainly in the last decade, the analysis and design of shear walls has been studied. But just a few of them considered arrangement of shear walls to find the optimum layout. In the present study, analysis...

In this study, the notion of multi-χ2 test and AIDA/cube testers are utilised to introduce the superpoly algebraic normal form monomial test through which the output of reduced round Trivium is distinguished from being random. The test successfully distinguishes the keystream of Trivium with 830 out of 1152 initialisation rounds with a complexity of 239 operations, which is the most effective distinguisher on reduced Trivium thus far. Applying algebraic IV differential attack...

The externality from communal metering of residential water: the case of Tehran

    , Article Water Resources and Economics ; Volume 23 , July , 2018 , Pages 53-58 ; 22124284 (ISSN) Vesal, M ; Rahmati, M. H ; Taheri Hosseinabadi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
Many countries use a single water meter for multiple units within a building. This creates a cost externality where the cost of water consumed is spread over all units. Using administrative data from Tehran Water and Wastewater Co. for 2013 and 2014, we find an increase in the number of units on a communal meter on average increases per unit use by 0.4%. Estimation at different levels of units reveals that almost all communal meters have higher per unit water use. The results suggest that removing this externality could save 2.7% water consumption in our sample. © 2018 Elsevier B.V

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 212 , 2020 Vaseghiamiri, S ; Mahsuli, M ; Ghannad, M. A ; Zareian, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper proposes a methodology for generating surrogate single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) models that can be utilized to estimate the probability distribution of the roof drift ratio of multistory buildings at various ground motion intensity measures. The use of an SDOF model as a surrogate for multistory buildings can significantly alleviate the high computational cost for probabilistic seismic demand assessment considering both model uncertainty and record-to-record variability. The surrogate SDOF model generated herein explicitly accounts for model uncertainties and can be used as an alternative to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of detailed building structures. Applications for such...

    Abstract
A hybrid method is introduced for analysis of the H-plane waveguide discontinuities. It combines multimode contour integral and mode matching techniques. The process is based on dividing the circuit structure into key building blocks and finding the multimode scattering matrix of each block individually. The multimode scattering matrix of the whole structure can be found by cascading these blocks. Also contour integral method is developed for analysis of multi-media circuits. Therefore, it is possible to analyze H-plane waveguide filters with dielectric resonators using this method. The accuracy and run time of the purposed method is compared with those reported in literatures and/or Ansoft...

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; 2016 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Hosseini, M ; Fekri, M ; Yekrangnia, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Most seismic design codes accept heavy damages to buildings in case of large earthquakes, provided that they are prevented against collapse. However, this leads to unacceptable consequences, such as very large volume of the required reconstruction works, in large populated cities. One way to get rid of these adverse consequences is using the idea of combining rocking/seesaw motion of the building's structure and energy dissipation at base level to create buildings easily repairable even after a large earthquake. In the present study, this idea has been employed for designing steel buildings with seesaw motion capability by using a central massive column at ground floor, with elastic behavior...
