    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 85, Issue 9 , 2011 , Pages 1972-1978 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Naseri, N ; Yousefi, M ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
TiO2/ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 nanolayer thin films were synthesized using sol-gel method. Optical analysis revealed high transmittance of the films in the visible range with almost the same bandgap energy for the both systems. XPS technique shows stoichiometric formation of TiO2 and ZnO on the surface of TiO2/ZnO and ZnO/TiO2 layers, respectively. According to AFM observations and its data analysis, the TiO2/ZnO films exhibited a higher surface roughness and more effective interfaces with electrolyte during redox reactions. Based on photoelectrochemical measurements, TiO2/ZnO nanolayer photoanode possesses a lower charge transfer resistance and higher transient time for charge carriers (e- and h+)...

    Abstract
In this study, the effects of TiO2 addition on the physical and photoelectrochemical properties of ZnO thin films have been investigated. The (TiO2)x-(ZnO)1-x nanocomposite thin films were dip-coated on both glass and indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated conducting glass substrates with various values of x, specifically 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5. Optical properties of the samples were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry in the range of 300-1100 nm. The optical spectra of the nanocomposite thin films showed high transparency in the visible region. The optical bandgap energy of the (TiO2)x-(ZnO)1-x films increased slightly with increasing values of x. The crystalline structure of the nanocomposite...

Anodic behavior of clioquinol at a glassy carbon electrode

    , Article Bioelectrochemistry ; Volume 80, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 175-181 ; 15675394 (ISSN) Ghalkhani, M ; Fernandes, I. P. G ; Oliveira, S. C. B ; Shahrokhian, S ; Oliveira-Brett, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Clioquinol is an antifungal, antiprotozoal and an Alzheimer's disease drug with cytotoxic activity toward human cancer cells. The electrochemical behavior of clioquinol and its oxidation product was studied using cyclic, differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry over a wide pH range on a glassy carbon electrode. The results revealed that the oxidation of clioquinol is an irreversible pH-dependent process that proceeds with the transfer of one electron and one proton in an adsorption-controlled mechanism and results in the formation of a main oxidation product, which adsorbs very strongly on the glassy carbon surface. The charge transfer coefficient was calculated as 0.64. The adsorbed...

A new structure to increase the photostability of CdTe quantum dot sensitized solar cells

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 44, Issue 4 , January , 2011 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Samadpour, M ; Iraji zad, A ; Taghavinia, N ; Molaei, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper a new cell structure is introduced to reduce the rate of CdTe corrosion in quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) using I -/I- 3 electrolyte. In this cell, one electrode is a titania nanorod that was sensitized with CdTe quantum dots as the working electrode. A thin gold layer is sputtered on the electrode to act as a protective layer against the I-/I- 3 corrosive electrolyte and to passivate the CdTe surface traps which are the main recombination centres in a QDSSC. In addition, a Schottky barrier formed at the interface of Au and CdTe prevents direct electron recombination from the CdTe conduction band with I- 3 ions. The mechanism of charge transfer and quantum dot...

Optimized Pt Coating for High Charge Transfer- High Transparency Cathodes of Dye Sensitized Solar Cell

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mashhoun, Sara (Author) ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Counter electrode of dye sensitized solar cell is prepared by deposition of a thin catalytic layer onto a conducting substrate and is responsible for reduction of iodide/triiodide redox electrolyte. Conventionally, counter electrode is made of platinum.
Depending on the method of deposition, the thickness of Pt layer varies. The Pt layer may be so thick that it acts as reflector and returns the incident light back to the cell. In this case, large amount of Pt is used and a rise in cost is been made, but only the Pt particles in the interface of counter electrode/electrolyte take part in the reduction reaction.
The aim of this project is optimization of making a counter electrode,...

    Abstract
Abstract: Surface-nanostructured TiO2 nanorods were synthesized hydrothermally at 180 °C. Such nanorods have ‘crack-like’ surfaces that resemble burnt charcoal. Compared to nanorods with relatively smoother surfaces, the charcoal-like nanorods have higher-specific surface areas. By using the nanorods as a light-scattering layer in double-layered dye-sensitized solar cells, the cells based on the charcoal-like nanorods have 20 % higher dye loading and also higher diffuse reflectance compared with cells utilizing ‘smooth’ nanorods. The efficiency of a screen-printed double-layer dye-sensitized solar cell based on the charcoal-like nanorods is higher at 7.29 %. Electrochemical...

    Abstract
Discharge characteristics of nanorods (NRs), microsized and nanosized copper (II) oxide (CuO) particles prepared via thermal decomposition and thermal oxidation routes are examined as cathode materials of a Zn/CuO cell without membrane separators. The electrochemical discharge is examined galvanostatically at a current density of 500 mAg−1 and reveals that the first discharge cycles of all the CuO materials contain one potential plateau; subsequent discharge cycles involve three potential plateaus. Each potential plateau is due to an electrochemical reaction. The first, second, and third potential plateaus are attributed to Cu2O3, CuO, and Cu2O discharges,...

    , Article Cuihua Xuebao/Chinese Journal of Catalysis ; Volume 31, Issue 11 , 2010 , Pages 1351-1357 ; 02539837 (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Rashvand Avei, M ; Danaee, I ; Gobal, F ; Mahjani, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A stable copper (hydr)oxide-modified electrode was prepared in 0.5 mol/L NaOH solution by cyclic voltammetry in the range of -250 to 1000 mV. It can be used for electrochemical studies in the range of -250 to 1000 mV without interfering peaks because there is no oxidation of copper. During an anodic potential sweep, the electro-oxidation of saccharose on Cu occurred by the formation of CuIII and this reaction also occurred in the early stages of the reversed cycle until it is stopped by the negative potentials. A mechanism based on the electro-chemical generation of CuIII active sites and their subsequent consumption by saccharose was proposed, and the rate law and kinetic parameters were...

Toxicity of graphene and graphene oxide nanowalls against bacteria

    , Article ACS Nano ; Volume 4, Issue 10 , October , 2010 , Pages 5731-5736 ; 19360851 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Bacterial toxicity of graphene nanosheets in the form of graphene nanowalls deposited on stainless steel substrates was investigated for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative models of bacteria. The graphene oxide nanowalls were obtained by electrophoretic deposition of Mg2+-graphene oxide nanosheets synthesized by a chemical exfoliation method. On the basis of measuring the efflux of cytoplasmic materials of the bacteria, it was found that the cell membrane damage of the bacteria caused by direct contact of the bacteria with the extremely sharp edges of the nanowalls was the effective mechanism in the bacterial inactivation. In this regard, the Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria with an...

    Abstract
Corrosion inhibition properties of some heterocyclic compounds (3-mercapto 1,2,4 triazole, benzotriazole, thiophene, and tetra hydro-thiophene) in Cu/H3PO4 medium were investigated theoretically and experimentally via cluster/polarized continuum and gravimetric approaches. Second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation and density functional theories were applied, and the electronic chemical potential, molecular softness, and extent of charge transfer were determined for inhibitor molecules at the metal/solution interface. Good correlations were observed for both theories between the calculated quantities and experimental data. To reveal the quality of metal-inhibitor interactions, comprehensive...

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry ; Volume 20, Issue 35 , Jun , 2010 , Pages 7386-7392 ; 09599428 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Azimirad, R ; Safa, S ; Larijani, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Carbon nanotube (CNT)-doped TiO2 thin films with various CNT contents were synthesized by sol-gel method for visible light photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria. Post annealing of the CNT-doped TiO2 thin films at 450 °C resulted in anatase TiO2 and formation of Ti-C and Ti-O-C carbonaceous bonds in the film. By increasing the CNT content, the thin films could further inactivate the bacteria in the dark. Meanwhile, as the CNT content increased from zero to 40 wt% the effective optical band gap energy of the CNT-doped TiO2 thin films annealed at 450 °C decreased from 3.2-3.3 to less than ∼2.8 eV providing light absorption in the visible region. Concerning this, visible light...

    Abstract
Impedance characteristics of the negative electrode of lead-acid battery were derived on the basis of fundamental interfacial processes occurring at the electrode. The solution of the governing equations was presented in terms of a simple equivalent circuit consisting of resistive and capacitive loops in which charge transfer and sulfate layer formation and also mass transfer (Warburg) elements are considered. The kinetic parameters were deduced by fitting the theoretically derived impedance to the experimental data. Impedance at various States of Charge (SoC) was also examined

Comparison of trap-state distribution and carrier transport in nanotubular and nanoparticulate TiO2 electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells

    , Article ChemPhysChem ; Volume 11, Issue 10 , July , 2010 , Pages 2140-2145 ; 14394235 (ISSN) Mohammadpour, R ; Zad, A. I ; Hagfeldt, A ; Boschloo, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with nanotubular TiO2 electrodes of varying thicknesses are compared to DSCs based on conventional nanoparticulate electrodes. Despite the higher degree of order in one-dimensional nanotubular electrodes, electron transport times and diffusion coefficients, determined under short-circuit conditions, are comparable to those of nanoparticulate electrodes. The quasi-Fermi level, however, is much lower in the nanotubes, suggesting a lower concentration of conduction band electrons. This provides evidence for a much higher diffusion coefficient for conduction band electrons in nanotubes than in nanoparticulate films. The electron lifetime and the diffusion length...
