    Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles draw electricity from the electrical grid and store energy in their batteries. To increase charge availability for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, on-board chargers can be used, which should be small in size and lightweight. In this article, an on-board bidirectional soft-switched battery charger is proposed that utilizes a phase-shift-controlled dual-bridge series resonant converter with isolation. The bidirectional characteristic of proposed charger makes it suitable for vehicle-to-grid operation (i.e., injecting power from the vehicle to the grid) in smart grids. A switching control scheme is also proposed to provide soft-switching operation for all...

    Abstract
An analog circuit for maximum power point tracking of a PV battery charger with minimum number of elements is proposed which works in a full range condition with a fixed switching frequency. In conventional MPPT algorithms which provide PV current or voltage reference value as output, fast climate changes may cause system instability. Here, a new variable is defined to eliminate the problem and improve the stability of the system. In order to compare the presented circuit with a conventional system, perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm which is well-known in PV systems is implemented on the same system. Simulation results (Conventional P&O algorithm and proposed structure) are presented...

Optimal zonal fast-charging station placement considering urban traffic circulation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Volume 66, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 45-56 ; 00189545 (ISSN) Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Sadeghi Barzani, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Fast-charging stations are connected to the electric grid and can fully charge an electric vehicle (EV) in less than half an hour. The capacity and location of the charging stations bring the costs to the electric grid operator, as well as to the station owner and EV user. A zonal approach has been proposed in this paper to determine the optimal place and capacity of fast-charging stations. Station development cost and the expected costs incurred by the EV user and the grid operator due to EV charging have also been included in the proposed approach. The geographic characteristics associated with the electric substations, urban roads, and city zones have also been considered in the proposed...

Electric vehicles as mobile energy storage devices to alleviate network congestion

    , Article 2019 Smart Gird Conference, SGC 2019, 18 December 2019 through 19 December 2019 ; 2019 ; 9781728158945 (ISBN) Haji Abolhassani, M ; Safdarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Electric vehicles (EVs) usage is becoming ubiquitous nowadays. Widespread integration of electric vehicles into electric energy distribution systems (EEDSs) has a twofold impact: (1) It may impose a burden on EEDSs when EVs are charging, (2) EVs could discharge their battery capacity using V2G technology when required. To mitigate adverse effects of massive integration of EVs in EEDSs, EVs could be used as mobile energy storage devices (MESDs) to transfer electric energy throughout EEDSs using a proper charging/discharging scheme. In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to control charging and discharging of EVs to improve EEDS performance. EVs are modeled...

On the effects of hydrostatic stress on Li diffusion kinetics and stresses in spherical active particles of Li-ion battery electrodes

    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
The main process in lithium-ion batteries is insertion/extraction of lithium into/from active electrode particles. Some active material of lithium-ion battery electrodes experiences a large volume change due to changes in lithium concentration. Since the failure of the electrode might be caused by large stresses, the mechanical phenomena in the electrode which are associated with the insertion and extraction of lithium, are of particular importance. This paper establishes an integrated framework of balance laws and thermodynamically consistent equations which couples lithium diffusion with a small elastic deformation. We investigate the effect of hydrostatic stress on lithium diffusion and...

    , Article 10th International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference, PEDSTC 2019, 12 February 2019 through 14 February 2019 ; 2019 , Pages 415-420 ; 9781538692547 (ISBN) Karimi, S ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
The LLC resonant converter, as a promising solution for battery charger applications, has the ability to adjust its output voltage during Constant Current and Constant Voltage modes in the charging profile. However, its operation mode changes as switching frequency changes. Therefore, for efficiency-oriented optimizations in battery charger applications, the one-pointed efficiency is not an appropriate objective. To this end, in this paper, a multi-pointed averaged efficiency is considered for optimization along with the transformer volume. Another factor of a proper design for a wide output range LLC is the converter peak voltage gain that is calculated based on an accurate method. The...

    Abstract
In Li-ion batteries the interface between the nano-size spherical core graphite and its surrounding solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, just inside SEI is susceptible to damage. Thus, accurate determination of the associated elastic fields is one of the challenges in optimizing the lifetime and capacity of Li-ion batteries. The required precision is achieved by considering the core graphite which belongs to the crystal class D6h as homogeneous spherically isotropic and SEI layer as functionally graded (FG) isotropic material. Moreover, to account for the surface/interface effects appropriately the core-shell nano-structure subjected to the diffusion-induced time-dependent nonuniform...

    Abstract
Designing transactive energy (TE) markets in distribution systems has been a hot topic due to the increased presence of residential prosumers. In the literature, several residential market platforms have been proposed; however, they usually have two main drawbacks: 1) ignoring the effect of single-phase distributed energy resources on the voltage unbalance (VU) in active distribution networks to develop a transactive coordination model that will effectively mitigate the VU and 2) inability in providing a user-friendly strategy for home occupants to adjust the willingness to pay/accept of responsive assets according to their comfort and economic purposes. This article amends the shortcomings...

    Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries should continuously be operated at the optimum temperature range (15∼40∘C) for the best performance. Surface temperature monitoring is critical for the safe and efficient operation of the battery. In this study, initially, the electrical parameters of the battery are determined by applying a second-order equivalent circuit model. This model then is integrated with a thermal model based on the temperature dependent behavior of the electrical parameters and the heat generated. The input parameters to the electro-thermal model include the current, the ambient fluid temperature and the output parameters include the terminal voltage, state of charge, cell core temperature...

    Abstract
Battery chargers are fundamental components for successful deployment of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) into future smart grid. Recently, an integrated isolated bidirectional battery charger has been proposed for PHEV applications. The proposed charger eliminates the conventional bulky dc-link capacitor by feeding a dual-bridge resonant tank directly from the three-phase grid. The disadvantages associated with the presented charger are the high number of semiconductor switches which contribute to high cost and switching losses of converter as well as complicated control circuitry. In this paper, the previous structure is modified to address the aforementioned drawbacks and is...

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 185 , August , 2020 Habibifar, R ; Aris Lekvan, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The growing trend of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years has led to the emergence of EV aggregators in electricity markets. Generally, the main goal of an EV aggregator is to buy electricity from the wholesale market in a cost-effective manner while satisfying the charging requirements of EV owners. Accordingly, this paper presents a decision support tool for EV aggregators which enables them to determine the optimal bidding strategy to effectively participate in the day-ahead and real-time energy, and frequency regulation markets. Indeed, the aggregator mainly obtains profit by selling energy during the high-price hours (via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability) and providing primary...

    Abstract
The battery management system (BMS) in electric vehicles monitors the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion battery by controlling transient parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature prevents the battery from operating outside the optimal operating range. The main feature of the battery management system is the correct estimation of the SOC in the broad range of vehicle navigation. In this paper, to estimate real-time of SOC in lithium-ion batteries and overcome faults of Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), the Square-Root Sigma Point Kalman Filter is applied on the basis of numerical approximations rather than analytical methods of EKF. For this purpose, the...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new energy management model for residential buildings to handle the uncertainties of demand and on-site PV generation. For this purpose, the building energy management system (BEMS) organizes a transactive energy (TE) market among plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to determine their charge/discharge scheduling. According to the proposed TE framework, the PEV owners get reimbursed by the BEMS for the flexibility they offer. In this regard, the PEV owners submit their response curves for reimbursement upon arrival. Then, the BEMS solves an optimization problem to maximize its own profit and determine the real-time TE market-clearing price. Afterward, based on the clearing...
