    Abstract
Herein, a novel Pt-APA composite (APA = pyridinium bromide salt) based on magnetic graphene oxide was synthesized and used as an effective catalyst. In this way, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are grown on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets by a simple and practical method which creates a unique nanostructure (Fe3O4/GO) through dispersing uniformly among graphene nanosheets. The resulted Pt-APA composite was obtained via adding PtCl2 to an ethanol solution of Fe3O4/GO and α-keto stabilized pyridinium ylide in related conditions. The synthesized nanocomposite structure was identified using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive...

    Abstract
In this paper, the sorption of uranium onto nanoporous silica adsorbent in the presence of nitrate, sulfate, chloride, fluoride and phosphate was studied. The effect of contact time between the nanoporous sorbent and aqueous solution, pH and initial concentration of uranium was also investigated. Uranium sorption onto nanoporous silica adsorbent is a very fast process as sorption rate increases with pH increment. Optimum pH for uranium sorption was 4-8. Experimental sorption isotherm is successfully described by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results obtained by batch experiments showed that the presence of high concentration of nitrate, sulfate, chloride and phosphate anions alone had...

    Abstract
Efficient electron transport layers (ETLs) play a pivotal role in the performance of solar cells. In recent years, Indium sulfide (In2S3) has been studied as a promising ETL in CuInGaS(e)2, Cu2ZnSnS(e)4, and perovskite solar cells. Despite several studies on spray-deposited In2S3, there is no complete experimental investigation on In2S3 thin films. The effect of the molar ratio of S/In and the type of indium precursor on the structural, morphological, optical, and electrical properties of sprayed-In2S3 layers has been studied. Films were characterized using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical transmission (UV-Vis), Mott-Schottky analysis, four-point probe, and...

    Abstract
A continuum hydrodynamic model with immersed solid/fluid interface is developed for simulating calcite dissolution by hydrochloric acid (HCl) at the pore scale, and is most accurate for a mass-transfer-controlled dissolution regime under laminar flow conditions. The model uses averaged Navier-Stokes equations to model momentum transfer in porous media and adopts a theoretically developed mass-transfer formulation with assumptions. The model includes no fitting parameter and is validated using experimental results. The findings of previous research and existing models are briefly discussed and their shortcomings and advantages are elucidated. The present model is used in some pore-scale...

Estimating Volatile Organic Compound emissions from wastewater circulating aeration tanks

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , 2005 , Pages 300-305 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Yaghmaei, S ; Rashidkhani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2005
    Abstract
The need for the control of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) has led engineers to modify wastewater aeration tank systems. In this research, air recirculation has been investigated as a possible VOC control strategy for these systems. A steady-state mathematical model of VOC emission rates has been developed from the fundamentals of VOC convection, volatilization and biodegradation. This model has been used to study the effect of aeration recirculation in enhancing the biodegradation of VOCs in the system, using dichloromethane as a typical VOC. A feasibility study considering plants of various sizes is needed to compare the costs and benefits of air recirculation to other VOC control...

Stereoelectronic effects: A simple yet powerful tool to manipulate anion affinity

    , Article Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry ; Volume 13, Issue 7 , Dec , 2015 , Pages 2170-2176 ; 14770520 (ISSN) Samet, M ; Fattahi, A ; Kass, S.R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Royal Society of Chemistry  2015
    Abstract
Different strategies are employed in designing strong and selective anion receptors but stereoelectronic effects have been largely ignored. In this work, the stereo configuration of a non-interacting ether is found to have a large impact of more than two orders of magnitude on the binding of a rigid diol with tetrabutylammonium chloride in acetonitrile-d3. A favorable carbon-oxygen dipole and an intramolecular C-H⋯OH hydrogen bond in an equatorially substituted ether is found to be energetically more important than a stabilizing hydrogen bond in the corresponding axially oriented alcohol. IR spectroscopy is also used to probe the structures of the bound complexes and several binding motifs...

    Abstract
In this study, we have investigated the use of electrodeposited Au-Pt nanoparticles (AuPtNPs) on indium tin oxide (ITO) for the detection of Hg2+ heavy ions in water samples. The mechanism of AuPtNP electrocrystallization on ITO glass in an aqueous solution containing 0.5 mM HAuCl4 + 0.5 mM H2PtCl6 is described for the first time. The nucleation mechanism of monometallic AuNPs on ITO was found to be progressive; however, a transition from progressive to instantaneous was observed for bimetallic AuPtNPs at elevated overpotentials. The modified ITOs were then assessed for the electrodetection of Hg2+ in aqueous media. It was shown by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) that the sensitivity of...

    Abstract
Herein, we report a new strategy for improving the efficiency and reducing the fabrication cost of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) by elimination of the three- or four-fold layer deposition of TiO2. This is performed by replacing a single layer deposition of mesoporous TiO2 beads, with sub-micrometer size, high surface area and tunable pore size, synthesized by a combination of sol-gel and solvothermal methods. Furthermore, superior electronic properties gained by a reduction in electronic trap states are achieved through doping of pristine TiO2 beads with lithium. The beads have a spherical shape with monodispersed texture consisting of anatase-TiO2 nanocrystals and ultra-fine pores. The...

    Abstract
Skeletal muscle tissue engineering aims to fabricate tissue constructs to replace or restore diseased or injured skeletal muscle tissues in the body. Several biomaterials and microscale technologies have been used in muscle tissue engineering. However, it is still challenging to mimic the function and structure of the native muscle tissues. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a powerful tool to mimic the hierarchical structure of native tissues. Here, 3D bioprinting was used to fabricate tissue constructs using gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-alginate bioinks. Mechanical and rheological properties of GelMA-alginate hydrogels were characterized. C2C12 myoblasts at the density 8 × 106 cells/mL...

    Abstract
The complexes PdII(qcq)(OAc) and PtII(qcq)Cl have been synthesized using environmentally benign synthesized ligands and characterized by elemental analyses: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed, in different media, for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction for typical aryl halides and terminal olefins under aerobic conditions. Since the base and the solvent were found to influence the efficiency of the reaction, reaction conditions, temperature, time, and the amount of K3PO4 and a mixture of H2O/PEG, were optimized. We found, for the Mizoroki–Heck reaction coupling less...
