    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 35, Issue 3 , 2020 , Pages 2037-2046 Hosseini, S. A ; Toulabi, M. R ; Salehi Dobakhshari, A ; Ashouri Zadeh, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a modified frequency control model is proposed, where the demand response (DR) control loop is added to the traditional load frequency control (LFC) model to improve the frequency regulation of the power system. One of the main obstacles for using DR in the frequency regulation is communication delay which exists in transferring data from control center to appliances. To overcome this issue, an adaptive delay compensator (ADC) is used in order to compensate the communication delay in the control loop. In this regard, a weighted combination of several vertex compensators, whose weights are updated according to the measured delay, is employed. Generating the phase lead is the...

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; Volume 234, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 143-155 Namdari, H ; Allahverdizadeh, F ; Sharifi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This paper presents a new robust composite nonlinear feedback control law for accurate, smooth, and fast regulation in the presence of parameter uncertainties, external disturbances, and input saturation for a class of spacecraft rendezvous systems. The novel proposed method consists of the original composite nonlinear feedback part for good transient performance plus a nonlinear disturbance rejection part for reducing the steady-state error stemming from variable disturbances and simultaneously producing feasible control input. The nonlinear disturbance rejection relies on sliding-mode observer for disturbance estimation. Closed-loop system stability has been proved with the Lyapunov...

Synthetic biology-inspired robust-perfect-adaptation-achieving control systems: model reduction and stability analysis

, Article IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems ; 2020 Mohammadie Zand, A ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
In addition to perfectly steering the output concentration of a process network to an exogenous set-point, a desired synthetically implemented biological controller should be able to robustly maintain this regulated output in the face of the extrinsic disturbances and inherent uncertainties due to an evervarying environment besides the imprecise modeling. Such an ability, which is called robust perfect adaptation (RPA), can be achieved by integral feedback control (IFC). Answering how IFC is (biochemically) constructible in generally unknown synthetic networks has been a research focus in the community. One of these answers, which has been well investigated previously, is to utilize a simple...

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This work deals with the robust D-stability test of linear time-invariant ( LTI ) general fractional order control systems in a closed loop where the system and - or the controller may be of fractional order. The concept of general implies that the characteristic equation of the LTI closed loop control system may be of both commensurate and non-commensurate orders, both the coefficients and the orders of the characteristic equation may be nonlinear functions of uncertain parameters, and the coefficients may be complex numbers. Some new specific areas for the roots of the characteristic equation are found so that they reduce the computational burden of testing the robust D-stability. Based on...

, Article IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems ; 2020 Mohsenipour, R ; Fathi Jegarkandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This article focuses on the robust D-stabilization analysis of fractional-order control systems where each of the system and the controller may be of fractional order. The coefficients of the system are considered as complex linear functions of interval uncertain parameters, so this article deals with fractional-order polytopic systems. First, a necessary and sufficient condition is introduced for the robust D-stabilization of the closed-loop control system based on the zero exclusion condition and the value set concept. Then, the geometric pattern of the value set of the characteristic polynomial is obtained analytically using the exposed vertices. Second, a function is presented to check...

    Abstract
This paper presents a data-driven approach that utilizes the gathered experimental data to model and control a test rig constructed for the high-powered gearboxes. For simulating a wide variety of operational conditions, the test rig should be capable of providing different speeds and torques; this is possible using a torque-applying system. For this purpose, Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) are used. Since applying accurate torque is a crucial demand as it affects the performance evaluation of the gearboxes, precise modelling of the actuation system along with a high-performance controller are required. In order to eliminate the need for to solve complex nonlinear equations of EHA that...

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this study, a novel artificial intelligence-based approach is presented to directly estimate the surface topography. To this aim, performance of different artificial intelligence-based techniques, including the multi-layer perceptron neural, radial basis function neural, and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system networks, in estimation of the sample topography is investigated. The results demonstrate that among the designed observers, the multi-layer perceptron method can estimate surface characteristics with higher accuracy than the other methods. In the classical imaging techniques, the scanning speed of atomic force microscope is restricted due to the time required by the oscillating...

    Abstract
In this study, a novel approach based on a modified Kalman filter algorithm is presented to directly estimate and measure the surface topography of samples by trolling mode atomic force microscopy. Trolling mode atomic force microscopy was introduced as an atomic force microscopy alternative to overcome imaging problems in liquid environments by reducing the liquid-resonator interaction forces. In conventional imaging techniques, the time to reach the steady state periodic motion of the oscillating probe restricts scanning speed. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel imaging technique for trolling mode atomic force microscopy based on the system dynamics model and using the...

Model predictive control of nonlinear discrete time systems with guaranteed stability

    , Article Asian Journal of Control ; Volume 22, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 657-666 Shamaghdari, S ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-Blackwell  2020
    Abstract
This paper presents the design of a new robust model predictive control algorithm for nonlinear systems represented by a linear model with unstructured uncertainty. The linear model is obtained by linearizing the nonlinear system at an operating point and the difference between the nonlinear and linear model is considered as a Lipschitz nonlinear function. The controller is designed for the linear model, which fulfills the stabilization condition for the nonlinear term. Unlike previous studies that have not considered a valid Lipschitz matrix of nonlinear term in the design process, we propose an algorithm in this paper in which it is considered. Therefore, the closed loop stability of the...

    Abstract
In this article, an adaptive nonlinear controller is designed to synchronize two uncertain fractional-order chaotic systems using fractional-order sliding mode control. The controller structure and adaptation laws are chosen such that asymptotic stability of the closed-loop control system is guaranteed. The adaptation laws are being calculated from a proper sliding surface using the Lyapunov stability theory. This method guarantees the closed-loop control system robustness against the system uncertainties and external disturbances. Eventually, the presented method is used to synchronize two fractional-order gyro and Duffing systems, and the numerical simulation results demonstrate the...

Observer-based singularity free nonlinear controller for uncertain systems subject to input saturation

    , Article European Journal of Control ; Volume 52 , 2020 , Pages 49-58 Zeinali, S ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work, design of an observer-based nonlinear controller for a class of single input-single output (SISO) systems in the general strict feedback form subject to input saturation based on the back-stepping technique has been addressed. A full order adaptive observer is constructed to estimate the unknown states and system parameters simultaneously. The proposed control scheme is singularity free and can handle the input nonlinearity. Asymptotical stability of the closed-loop system in the presence of observer dynamics and input saturation has been established by the Lyapunov stability theorem. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is illustrated by applying the proposed scheme to...

An Extremely low ripple high voltage power supply for pulsed current applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 35, Issue 8 , 2020 , Pages 7991-8001 Zarghani, M ; Mohsenzade, S ; Hadizade, A ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This article describes the development of an 18 kV, 30 kW power supply for a pulsed current load with the maximum current of 20 A and a di/dt equal to 100 A/μs. The achieved output ripple is less than 0.01%. In such a high level of precision, the most important issues are considerable difference between the instantaneous and average output powers, as well as insufficient reaction speed of the converter to the fast load change. Very low level of the voltage feedback and its sensitivity to the noise. The first issue necessitates a notable overdesign of the converter switches if the output voltage precision is dedicated to the converter. The second issue raises the problems relevant to...

DC-link loop bandwidth selection strategy for grid-connected inverters considering power quality requirements

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 119 , 2020 Zarei, S. F ; Mokhtari, H ; Ghasemi, M. A ; Peyghami, S ; Davari, P ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
DC-link voltage and output current control loops are two cascaded loops in the control structure of grid-connected inverters. A high DC-link voltage loop bandwidth (DCL-BW) provides more disturbance rejection capability for the control loop and is preferred from control system perspective. However, for stability issues, this BW is limited and must be sufficiently less than that of the current control loop. Among the different control schemes, instantaneous active reactive control (IARC) method provides the highest possible DCL-BW (i.e., 0.02 × switching frequency). Having this degree of freedom in the controller design, a proper methodology should be defined for selection of DCL-BW. In this...

    , Article Journal of Cleaner Production ; 10 March , 2020 Khalili Nasr, A ; Tavana, M ; Alavi, B ; Mina, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Maximizing the value of resources and producing less waste are strategic decisions affecting sustainability and competitive advantage. Sustainable closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs) are designed to minimize waste by circling back (repairing, reselling, or dismantling for parts) previously discarded products into the value chain. This study presents a novel two-stage fuzzy supplier selection and order allocation model in a CLSC. In Stage 1, we use the fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) to select the most suitable suppliers according to economic, environmental, social, and circular criteria. In Stage 2, we use a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP) model to design a...

    Abstract
Supplier selection and order allocation are important keys for reverse logistics and closed-loop supply chain networks especially with the presence of demand–supply imbalance risks. If such uncertainties and risks are not foreseen in the chain, and corresponding appropriate measures are not taken to handle them, irreparable damages would be expected consequently. The importance of this issue in closed-loop supply chains is more appreciated due to the importance and the effect of this chain on the environment. In this research, the disruption risk and the uncertainties related to the demand, market price, and the number of returned products are simultaneously considered. Purchasing from the...

Intelligent trajectory tracking of an aircraft in the presence of internal and external disturbances

    , Article International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control ; Volume 29, Issue 16 , 2019 , Pages 5820-5844 ; 10498923 (ISSN) Emami, A ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This research deals with developing an intelligent trajectory tracking control approach for an aircraft in the presence of internal and external disturbances. Internal disturbances including actuators faults, unmodeled dynamics, and model uncertainties as well as the external disturbances such as wind turbulence significantly affect the performance of the common trajectory tracking control approaches. There are several fault-tolerant control approaches in the literature to overcome the effects of specific actuator or sensor faults during the flight. However, trajectory tracking control of an air vehicle in the presence of unexpected faults and simultaneous presence of wind turbulence is...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop a non-linear robust controller with adaptive gains in order to prevent malaria epidemic as a positive system with an uncertain model. The malaria outbreak is modelled by seven non-linear coupled differential equations for the population variables: susceptible, exposed, symptomatic infected and recovered humans and the susceptible, exposed and infected mosquitoes. The non-linear robust adaptive integral-sliding-mode controller is developed in order to appropriately adjust the use of treated bednets, treatment rate of infected individuals and the use of insecticide spray to control malaria epidemic. Accordingly, the numbers of exposed and infected humans and...
