The effect of energy spectrum change on DNA damage in and out of field in 10-MV clinical photon beams

    , Article Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing ; Volume 53, Issue 1 , January , 2015 , Pages 67-75 ; 01400118 (ISSN) Ezzati, A. O ; Xiao, Y ; Sohrabpour, M ; Studenski, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Verlag  2015
    Abstract
The aim of this study was to quantify the DNA damage induced in a clinical megavoltage photon beam at various depths in and out of the field. MCNPX was used to simulate 10 × 10 and 20 × 20 cm2 10-MV photon beams from a clinical linear accelerator. Photon and electron spectra were collected in a water phantom at depths of 2.5, 12.5 and 22.5 cm on the central axis and at off-axis points out to 10 cm. These spectra were used as an input to a validated microdosimetric Monte Carlo code, MCDS, to calculate the RBE of induced DSB in DNA at points in and out of the primary radiation field at three depths. There was an observable difference in the energy spectra for photons and electrons for points...

A comparative study of the performance of a SI engine fuelled by natural gas as alternative fuel by thermodynamic simulation

    , Article 2009 ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division Fall Technical Conference, ICEF 2009, Lucerne, 27 September 2009 through 30 September 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 49-57 ; 9780791843635 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

Non-linear analysis of functionally graded circular plates under asymmetric transverse loading

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 44, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 928-942 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Nosier, A ; Fallah, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory with von Karman non-linearity, the non-linear axisymmetric and asymmetric behavior of functionally graded circular plates under transverse mechanical loading are investigated. Introducing a stress function and a potential function, the governing equations are uncoupled to form equations describing the interior and edge-zone problems of FG plates. This uncoupling is then used to conveniently present an analytical solution for the non-linear asymmetric deformation of an FG circular plate. A perturbation technique, in conjunction with Fourier series method to model the problem asymmetries, is used to obtain the solution for various clamped...

On the assessment of modal nonlinear pushover analysis for steel frames with semi-rigid connections

    , Article Structural Engineering and Mechanics ; Volume 32, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 383-398 ; 12254568 (ISSN) Zarfam, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Applying nonlinear statistical analysis methods in estimating the performance of structures in earthquakes is strongly considered these days. This is due to the methods' simplicity, timely lower cost and reliable estimation in seismic responses in comparison with time-history nonlinear dynamic analysis. Among nonlinear methods, simplified to be incorporated in the future guidelines, Modal Pushover Analysis, known by the abbreviated name of MPA, simply models nonlinear behavior of structures; and presents a very proper estimation of nonlinear dynamic analysis using lateral load pattern appropriate to the mass. Mostly, two kinds of connecting joints, 'hinge' and 'rigid', are carried out in...

A novel metabolic disorder in the degradation pathway of endogenous methanol due to a mutation in the gene of alcohol dehydrogenase

    , Article Clinical Biochemistry ; Volume 90 , 2021 , Pages 66-72 ; 00099120 (ISSN) Razzaghy Azar, M ; Nourbakhsh, M ; Vafadar, M ; Nourbakhsh, M ; Talebi, S ; Sharifi Zarchi, A ; Salehi Siavashani, E ; Garshasbi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: A small amount of methanol is produced endogenously in the human body but it is efficiently metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and other enzymes, and the products eliminated without harm. In this study, we present a new entity of inborn error of methanol metabolism due to a mutation in the ADH1C gene coding for the γ subunit that is part of several ADH isoenzymes. Results: This disorder was discovered in an 11.58-year-old boy. During one 9-month hospital admission, he had periods of 1–4 days during which he was comatose, and between these periods he was sometimes verbose and euphoric, and had ataxia, dysarthria. Following hemodialysis treatments, he became conscious and...

    Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies in the world and has a high mortality rate. It is believed that dysfunction in the expression of mucins and aberrant expression of some lncRNAs are associated with the occurrence and development of CRC. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of MUC15, MUC16, MUC20, PCAT1, CCAT1 and HOTAIR genes in colorectal cancer and its relationship with clinicopathological variables. Materials and methods: This research was prospective case-control study. Tumors from CRC patients were collected from the Taleghani Hospital, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. RNA...
