    Abstract
The effect of nanodiamond (ND) particles on the network structure and vulcanization kinetics of natural rubber (NR)/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) blend vulcanized by three different curing systems, namely conventional (CV), semi-efficient (SEV) and efficient (EV), was investigated. The filler dispersion, crosslink density, curing kinetics and reversion behavior were fully studied. The state of ND dispersion in the rubber matrix was investigated by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Swelling experiments and tensile tests exhibited that upon incorporation of ND crosslink density of NR/SBR blend was enhanced significantly due to the large surface area of nano filler...

Experimental and numerical investigation of low-temperature performance of modified asphalt binders and mixtures

    , Article Road Materials and Pavement Design ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 1353-1374 ; 14680629 (ISSN) Jahanbakhsh, H ; Karimi, M. M ; Tabatabaee, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Thermal cracking is the prevalent type of distress experienced by asphalt pavements in cold regions. It is widely assumed that when thermal stresses induced in the pavement exceed the tensile strength of the asphalt surface layer, cracking occurs; however, the role of thermal fatigue should not be ignored. To better describe the low-temperature (LT) performance properties of modified asphalt binders, a new parameter, normalised tensile stress (NTS), was defined in this research. NTS values were compared with bending beam rheometer (BBR), direct tension (DT) and semi-circular bending (SCB) fracture test results. The m-value parameter of the BBR test specifies the type of asphalt binder. This...

    Abstract
In the expanding field of tissue engineering (TE), improvement of biodegradability and osteoconductivity of biomaterials are required. The use of non-toxic reagents during manufacturing processes is also necessary to decrease toxicity and increase cell viability in vivo. Herein, we present a novel approach to prepare hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods from sea bio-wastes through a green and eco-friendly wet-chemical processing for bone TE. Highly porous natural polymer-ceramic nanocomposites made of HA, gelatin (Ge) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels are then introduced. It was found that cross-linking of the hydrogel matrix by glucose as a green reagent affected all characteristics of...

    Abstract
Cell-laden hydrogel microcapsules enable the high-throughput production of cell aggregates, which are relevant for three-dimensional tissue engineering and drug screening applications. However, current microcapsule production strategies are limited by their throughput, multistep protocols, and limited amount of compatible biomaterials. We here present a single-step process for the controlled microfluidic production of single-core microcapsules using enzymatic outside-in cross-linking of tyramine-conjugated polymers. It was hypothesized that a physically, instead of the conventionally explored biochemically, controlled enzymatic cross-linking process would improve the reproducibility,...

Developing tough terpolymer hydrogel with outstanding swelling ability by hydrophobic association cross-linking

    , Article Polymer ; Volume 254 , 2022 ; 00323861 (ISSN) Rahmani, P ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Hydrogels with remarkable hydrophilicity and tunable toughness are appealing materials to serve as superabsorbent polymers. However, chemically cross-linked hydrogels often suffer from low toughness regardless of their considerable swelling, restricting their widespread applications. In comparison, the network of physically cross-linked hydrogels can be regulated to meet both a high swelling ratio and considerable toughness. Here, we develop superabsorbent and tough hydrophobic associated hydrogels using terpolymerization of poly acrylic acid (PAA), polyacrylamide (PAM), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) within the micelles formed by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant. To this end, various...

The interactive parameters including biopolymer backbone concentration, monomer concentration and γ-irradiation dose were selected as major factors in the synthesis of superabsorbent and three levels for each factor...

Investigation of novel polyurethane elastomeric networks based on polybutadiene-ol/polypropyleneoxide mixture and their structure-properties relationship

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 32, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 3933-3941 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Amrollahi, M ; Sadeghi, G. M. M ; Kashcooli, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Polyurethane elastomer networks were designed and synthesized based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene/polypropyleneoxide (HTPB/PPO) mixtures, 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol. Various networks with different molar ratio of HTPB to PPO (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 and 100/0) had been prepared. Depending on the length of soft segment, average functionality of polyol mixtures, mechanical and thermal properties of samples were varied. Our observations confirmed that final properties of the networks can be attributed to two synergistic factors: (a) formation of chemical network (crosslinking) and (b) soft segment length. An optimum composition was found. This optimum composition...

CMC/celite superabsorbent composites: Effect of reaction variables on saline-absorbency under load

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 19, Issue 8 , May , 2010 , Pages 571-579 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Soleyman, R. A ; Ghasemzadeh, H ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A series of superabsorbent composites were synthesized through graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the presence of celite powder using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent and ammonium persulphate (APS) as an initiator. The chemical structure and thermal properties of the composite hydrogels were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and TGA methods, respectively. Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In free-state, the swelling conditions and hence the related data are not real, because in all their applications the swelling particles of superabsorbent must absorb aqueous solutions while...

    Abstract
Chitosan is a natural polymer with acceptable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical stability; hence, it has been widely appraised for drug and gene delivery applications. However, there has been no comprehensive assessment to tailor-make chitosan cross-linkers of various types and functionalities as well as complex chitosan-based semi- and full-interpenetrating networks for drug delivery systems (DDSs). Herein, various fabrication methods developed for chitosan hydrogels are deliberated, including chitosan crosslinking with and without diverse cross-linkers. Tripolyphosphate, genipin and multi-functional aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and epoxides are common cross-linkers used in...
