H 2 adsorption mechanism in Mg modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes for hydrogen storage

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 37, Issue 2 , January , 2012 , Pages 1919-1926 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Reyhani, A ; Mortazavi, S. Z ; Mirershadi, S ; Golikand, A. N ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with diameter of about 50 nm were synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition. We have investigated the influence of Mg doping to the MWCNTs on its hydrogen storage property. TEM micrographs showed that Mg was attached to the MWCNTs and discontinuous arrangement of the carbon walls was recognized in the MWCNTs. According to XPS and BET analyses, the surface functional groups and pore size of the Mg-MWCNTs are increased by interactions between the Mg and the MWCNT's outer walls. The electrochemical discharging curves of the MWCNTs and Mg-doped MWCNTs revealed that the hydrogen storage capacity was 363 and 450 mAhg -1, respectively. Volumetric...

    , Article Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics ; Volume 233, Issue 8 , 2010 , Pages 1834-1849 ; 03770427 (ISSN) Taleizadeh, A. A ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Najafi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a multiproduct single-machine production system under economic production quantity (EPQ) model is studied in which the existence of only one machine causes a limited production capacity for the common cycle length of all products, the production defective rates are random variables, shortages are allowed and take a combination of backorder and lost sale, and there is a service rate constraint for the company. The aim of this research is to determine the optimal production quantity, the allowable shortage level, and the period length of each product such that the expected total cost, including holding, shortage, production, setup and defective items costs, is minimized. The...

The amount of dopants is varied in order to investigate their influence on electrochemical properties. The formation of V, Co-codoped TiO2(B) nanobelts with widths of 20 and 60 nm is demonstrated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry and field-emission scanning electron microscopy analyses. In addition, the electrochemical properties of the samples are tested by cyclic voltammetry, charging/discharging, and cyclic performance techniques. Compared to other...

Fast convergent and unconditionally stable galerkin's method with adaptive hermite-gauss expansion for guided-mode extraction in two-dimensional photonic crystal based waveguides

    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 169-175 ; 07403224 (ISSN) Sarrafi, P ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
Optical Society of American (OSA)  2009
    Abstract
It has been recently shown that guided modes in two-dimensional photonic crystal based structures can be fast and efficiently extracted by using the Galerkin's method with Hermite-Gauss basis functions. Although quite efficient and reliable for photonic crystal line defect waveguides, difficulties are likely to arise for more complicated geometries, e.g., for coupled resonator optical waveguides. First, unwanted numerical instability may well occur if a large number of basis functions are retained in the calculation. Second, the method could have a slow convergence rate with respect to the truncation order of the electromagnetic field expansion. Third, spurious solutions are not unlikely to...

An analytical model for soft error critical charge of nanometric SRAMs

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems ; Volume 17, Issue 9 , 2009 , Pages 1187-1195 ; 10638210 (ISSN) Jahinuzzaman, S. M ; Sharifkhani, M ; Sachdev, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Scaling transistor size to the scale of the nanometer coupled with reduction of supply voltage has made SRAMs more vulnerable to soft errors than ever before. The vulnerability has been accentuated by increased variability in device parameters. In this paper, we present an analytical model for critical charge in order to assess the soft error vulnerability of 6T SRAM cell. The model takes into account the dynamic behavior of the cell and demonstrates a simple technique to decouple the nonlinearly coupled storage nodes. Decoupling of storage nodes enables solving associated current equations to determine the critical charge for an exponential noise current. The critical charge model thus...

    Abstract
Scar tissue size following myocardial infarction is an independent predictor of cardiovascular outcomes, yet little is known about factors regulating scar size. We demonstrate that collagen V, a minor constituent of heart scars, regulates the size of heart scars after ischemic injury. Depletion of collagen V led to a paradoxical increase in post-infarction scar size with worsening of heart function. A systems genetics approach across 100 in-bred strains of mice demonstrated that collagen V is a critical driver of postinjury heart function. We show that collagen V deficiency alters the mechanical properties of scar tissue, and altered reciprocal feedback between matrix and cells induces...

Apathy exacerbates postural control impairments in stroke survivors: The potential effects of cognitive dual-task for improving postural control

    , Article Neuropsychologia ; Volume 174 , 2022 ; 00283932 (ISSN) Dehmiyani, A ; Mehdizadeh, H ; Azad, A ; Cheraghifard, M ; Jamali, S ; Davoudi, M ; Shokouhyan, S. M ; Taghizadeh, G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Apathy is a stressor and debilitating common condition for both stroke survivors and their caregivers. However, its effects on the postural control of these patients have not yet been investigated. Improved postural stability through withdrawing attention from postural control by concurrent cognitive task (i.e. dual-task condition) has been reported previously, but the effect of apathy, as a confounding factor, remains unknown. This study aimed to examine the effects of apathy and dual-task condition on postural control of chronic stroke survivors from biomechanical and neurophysiological perspectives. Twenty non-apathetic stroke survivors, 20 apathetic stroke survivors, and 20 sex-, age-,...

    Abstract
Slow-gamma (35-45 Hz) phase synchronization and the coupling between slow-gamma and low-frequency theta oscillations (4–8 Hz) are closely related to memory retrieval and cognitive functions. In this pilot study, we assess the Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between theta and slow-gamma oscillatory bands and the quality of synchronization in slow-gamma oscillations using Phase Locking Value (PLV) on EEG data from healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) during an oddball olfactory task. Our study indicates noticeable differences between the PLV and PAC values corresponding to olfactory stimulation in the three groups...

Multi-class segmentation of skin lesions via joint dictionary learning

    , Article Biomedical Signal Processing and Control ; Volume 68 , 2021 ; 17468094 (ISSN) Moradi, N ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Melanoma is the deadliest type of human skin cancer. However, it is curable if diagnosed in an early stage. Recently, computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have drawn much interests. Segmentation is a crucial step of a CAD system. There are different types of skin lesions having high similarities in terms of color, shape, size and appearance. Most available works focus on a binary segmentation. Due to the huge variety of skin lesions and high similarities between different types of lesions, multi-class segmentation is still a challenging task. Here, we propose a method based on joint dictionary learning for multi-class segmentation of dermoscopic images. The key idea is based on combining...

Near infrared laser stimulation of human neural stem cells into neurons on graphene nanomesh semiconductors

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces ; Volume 126 , 2015 , Pages 313-321 ; 09277765 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Shirazian, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Reduced graphene oxide nanomeshes (rGONMs), as p-type semiconductors with band-gap energy of ~1. eV, were developed and applied in near infrared (NIR) laser stimulation of human neural stem cells (hNSCs) into neurons. The biocompatibility of the rGONMs in growth of hNSCs was found similar to that of the graphene oxide (GO) sheets. Proliferation of the hNSCs on the GONMs was assigned to the excess oxygen functional groups formed on edge defects of the GONMs, resulting in superhydrophilicity of the surface. Under NIR laser stimulation, the graphene layers (especially the rGONMs) exhibited significant cell differentiations, including more elongations of the cells and higher differentiation of...

    Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible neurological disorder that progresses gradually and can cause severe cognitive and behavioral impairments. This disease is currently considered a social and economic incurable issue due to its complicated and multifactorial characteristics. Despite decades of extensive research, we still lack definitive AD diagnostic and effective therapeutic tools. Consequently, one of the most challenging subjects in modern medicine is the need for the development of new strategies for the treatment of AD. A large body of evidence indicates that amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide fibrillation plays a key role in the onset and progression of AD. Recent studies have reported...
