    Abstract
High-quality guided wave devices are key components in integrated millimeter-wave circuits. In this paper, we propose mm-wave planar dielectric waveguides based on thin, anisotropic artificial dielectric layers with very high in-plane permittivity. Waves propagating on such films are surface waves whose field exponentially decays outside the film in the vertical direction, similar to waveguides commonly used in integrated optics. The very high in-plane permittivity of the artificial dielectric layers leads to strong field confinement, and allows the implementation of relatively thin waveguides. This fact, together with the planar structure of these devices, make them highly suitable for...

    Abstract
The influence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on dielectric properties of planar and homeotropic oriented nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) were studied during the temperature interval of 298–322 °K. It was found that the dielectric permittivity was considerably increased by adding NPs mass percentages. The structural characterization of the synthesized NPs with the scale 14–18 nm has been analyzed by the X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy results. The obtained dielectric anisotropy ((Formula presented.)) and mean dielectric ((Formula presented.)) have shown an immense increment in the value of 1% and 10% wt. NPs doped NLCs, respectively. These results were assigned...

Improving the performance of a numerical model to simulate the EHD interaction effect induced by dielectric barrier discharge

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow ; Volume 67 , 2017 , Pages 79-94 ; 0142727X (ISSN) Omidi, J ; Mazaheri, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma actuators. The lack of a general model to accurately simulate the related phenomena is one of the primary limitations in studying such type of actuators. One of the most frequently used models of this type was proposed by Suzen and Huang (S-H). Despite the numerous efforts made to improve this model, including a recent work of the authors, some deficiencies still exist. In this study, new modifications have been introduced to improve the performance and accuracy of the S-H phenomenological model. Here, a relation between the electrical-potential and charge-density equations has been made in...

    Abstract
In the present work the effect of simultaneous doping of carbon and nickel on the microstructural, optical, and electrical properties of barium strontium titanate (BST) is investigated. Thin films of BST were prepared by the sol-gel method in six different compositions ((Ba0.6Sr0.4)(NixCyTi1-x-y)O3): x = y = 0.00 (BST), x = 0.04 y = 0.00 (BST4N), x = 0.04 y = 0.01 (BST4N-1C), x = 0.04 y = 0.02 (BST4N-2C), x = 0.04 y = 0.03 (BST4N-3C), and x = y = 0.04 (BST4N-4C). Structural features and chemical bonds of the films were studied by TGA/DSC, XRD, FT-IR, and FE-SEM. The electrical and optical properties of the films were analysed by impedance spectroscopy and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The results...

    Abstract
Wind turbines are of the most promising devices to cut down carbon emissions. However, some phenomena that adversely affect their performance are inevitable. The aim of the present paper is to investigate flow separation prevention exploiting leading edge (LE) single dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (SDBD-PA) on an airfoil belonging to a section of a locally developed wind turbine. The numerical results of the surface pressure distribution over the airfoil were compared with the experimental measurements carried out by the authors on the same blade section, and good agreement was found between numerical and experimental data for both plasma-OFF and plasma-ON cases. An in-depth...

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, A: Physical ; Volume 141, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 463-470 ; 09244247 (ISSN) Moetakef, P ; Ali Nemati, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Pyrochlore free (x)PMN-(1 - x)PZT ceramics were synthesized successfully by a seeding method. In this method, the mixture of PbO, MgO and Nb2O5 was added to the prepared PZT sol to from PMN-PZT gel. The gel was fired to vaporize the organic contents of gel and obtain powder. Two-step sintering process was used to produce pyrochlore free ceramics. The samples produced by this method showed higher relative densities, lower sintering temperature and higher dielectric properties relative to the mixed oxide method, mostly due to the higher homogeneity of the prepared powder. The measured dielectric properties of PZT-rich and PMN-rich materials were high while the other samples exhibited low...

Scattering of a Gaussian beam by a spherical dielectric object using the vectorial Gaussian beam tracing method

    , Article ICCEA 2004 - 2004 3rd International Conference on Computational Electromagnetics and its Applications, Beijing, 1 November 2004 through 4 November 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 72-75 ; 0780385624 (ISBN); 9780780385627 (ISBN) Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Scattering of a Gaussian beam by a spherical dielectric object is studied using the vectorial Gaussian beam tracing method. Expansion to a few Gaussian beams with the smaller waists has been used to extend the method to a more generalized one. This method can be applied to a large variety of different shape objects and incident beam profiles. Numerical results of this computationally fast method show a good agreement with the results represented in the literature. © 2004 IEEE

Reflection analysis of the end-facet dielectric slab waveguide by FDTD method

    , Article ICCEA 2004 - 2004 3rd International Conference on Computational Electromagnetics and its Applications, Beijing, 1 November 2004 through 4 November 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 453-456 ; 0780385624 (ISBN) Vahidpour, M ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
The Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method has been applied to the analysis of abruptly-ended dielectric waveguides. In these waveguides, incident propagating wave undergoes reflection in an interaction with the end-facet. As a result of the discontinuity, all possible propagating modes may be excited. The constituent propagating modes are extracted from the reflected wave by the least square method. Thus, we present a good estimation of the amplitudes of the reflected modes. This full wave analysis technique is also capable of analyzing any arbitrarily shaped facet. © 2004 IEEE

Polynomial expansion for extraction of electromagnetic eigenmodes in layered structures

    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Volume 20, Issue 12 , 2003 , Pages 2434-2441 ; 07403224 (ISSN) Mehrany, K ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Optical Society of America (OSA)  2003
    Abstract
A polynomial expansion approach to the extraction of guided and leaky modes in layered structures including dielectric waveguides and periodic stratified media is proposed. To verify the method we compared the results of analysis of a typical test case with those reported in the literature and found good agreement. Polynomial expansion is a nonharmonic expansion and does not involve harmonic functions or intrinsic modes of homogenous layers. This approach has the benefit of leading to algebraic dispersion equations rather than to a transcendental dispersion equation; therefore, it will be easier to use than other methods such as the argument principle method, the reflection pole method, and...

Molecular structure and physical properties of E-beam crosslinked low-density polyethylene for wire and cable insulation applications

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 86, Issue 8 , 2002 , Pages 1959-1969 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Haji Saeid, M ; Gangi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
Crosslinking of homemade low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was performed by electron-beam (EB) irradiation. The gel content of the EB-exposed LDPE was determined by the solvent-extraction method. The degree of crosslinking was also evaluated by a hot set measuring test. The results obtained from both the gel-sol and the hot set methods showed that the degree of crosslinking was dependent on the deposited energy in LDPE samples. Increasing the absorbed dose increased the degree of network formation. The LDPE with higher molecular weight yielded higher efficiency of crosslinking at the same irradiation dose. The effect of irradiation dose on the molecular weight between crosslinks (Mc),...

    Abstract
The structural and dielectric properties of Gadolinium substituted U-type hexaferrites (Sr4Zn2Fe36O60) were investigated. The samples were synthesized via the Sol-gel auto combustion route. In a muffle furnace, these samples were sintered for 5 h at 1250 °C. The pellets of synthesized powder samples were characterized by XRD, PL, Dielectric, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies. Structural elucidation of Sr4Zn2Fe36-xGdxO60 was done via XRD. The obtained XRD patterns were matched with the prior literature. The impact of Gd3+ substitutions was measured on all the lattice parameters. Lattice constants “a" and “c" were found between 5.871 and 5.900 Å and 111.76–112.23 Å, respectively. The PL spectra...

Impact of dielectric barrier discharge plasma on the wake of a wind turbine blade section oscillating in plunge

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy ; Volume 236, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 320-335 ; 09576509 (ISSN) Maleki, G. H ; Davari, A. R ; Soltani, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Effects of dielectric barrier discharge plasma have been studied on the wake velocity profiles of a section of a 660 kW wind turbine blade in plunging motion in a wind tunnel. The corresponding unsteady velocity profiles show remarkable improvement when the plasma actuators were operating and the angles of attack of the model were beyond the static stall angles of the airfoil. As a result the drag force was considerably reduced. It is further observed that the plasma-induced flow attenuates the leading edge vortices that are periodically shed into wake and diminishes the large eddies downstream. The favorable effects of the plasma augmentation are shown to occur near the uppermost and...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the potential of using an active flow control technique to modify stall flutter oscillations of a NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) 0015 wing section. Wind tunnel experiments have been performed with a test-rig that provides the elastic degree of freedom in pitch. Measurements of the clean airfoil are taken at preset angles of θ 0 = 6 ° - 12 °, and for Reynolds numbers of R e c = 6.2 × 10 4 - 1.25 × 10 5, which reveal the dependency of the stall flutter oscillations to Rec and θ0. Then, flow control experiments are carried out at θ 0 = 10 ° and R e c = 1.04 × 10 5. Two dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators have been employed simultaneously to...

An accurate derivation of spatial green's function for finite dielectric structures using characteristic green's function-perfectly matched layer method

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation ; Vol. 62, Issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 3201-3211 ; ISSN: 0018926X Torabi, A ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A closed-form spatial Green's function for a truncated dielectric slab is derived by using a combination of the characteristic Green's function (CGF) and perfectly matched layer (PML) method. The original structure is terminated by PML that is backed by perfect electric conductor (PEC) in semi-infinite layer at the top and/or bottom. The eigenmodes of the closed structure by PML construct the continuous spectrum contribution of the original structure efficiently. Derived Green's function is exact for separable finite structure while it is approximate for nonseparable one especially in the corners. Generalized scattering matrix (GSM) of truncating surface which contains possible conversions...

Novel multifunctional capacitor-varistor ceramics based on SnO2

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 44, Issue 16 , 2018 , Pages 20386-20390 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Maleki Shahraki, M ; Alipour, S ; Mahmoudi, P ; Karimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Up to now, multifunctional varistor-capacitor materials were based on TiO2, even though these materials failed to have practical applications. For the first time, in this research, multifunctional varistor-capacitor properties are observed in the CuO-doped SnO2-CoO-Sb2O3 system. The XRD analysis showed that this system has a single phase microstructure. SEM images indicated that the CuO addition resulted in a better densification and larger grain size. The very low electric breakdown field of the CuO-doped SnO2-CoO-Sb2O3 system (12 V/mm, similar to TiO2), is a consequence of coarse-grained microstructure. This varistor had a suitable surge withstand capability as well. The colossal...

Universal rotation of nanowires in static uniform electric fields in viscous dielectric liquids

    Abstract
The wide utilization of nanomanipulation as a promising approach in microorganisms, nanoelectromechanical systems, and assembly of nanostructures remarks the importance of nanostructures' motion in electric fields. Here, we study the rotational dynamics of metallic and non-metallic nanowires (NWs) in a static uniform electric field in viscous dielectric liquids. For metallic NWs, it has been theoretically shown that the electric field-induced rotation is practically independent of the geometrical dimensions and the electrical properties of NWs. Our experimental results for suspended silver (Ag) NWs in microscope oil are perfectly in agreement with this model. However, in the case of TiO2...

    Abstract
Unidirectional current flow is at the heart of modern electronics, which has been conceived by making p–n junctions or Schottky barriers between different kinds of materials. Within such elements, however, synthesis of thin film lateral heterostructures has so far remained challenging. Here, a one-step simple synthesis of p-type, n-type, and metallic lateral heterostructures using bipolar electrodeposition (BPE) technique is reported. Molybdenum oxides and sulfides with gradient of oxygen and sulfur are deposited at a metallic substrate. A lateral heterostructure is achieved with electrical properties that change from p- to n-type semiconductor and then to metal by moving in the plane of the...
