    Abstract
Continuity of supply plays a significant role in modern distribution system planning and operational studies. Accordingly, various techniques have been developed for reliability assessment of distribution networks. However, owing to the complexities and restrictions of these methods, many researchers have resorted to several heuristic optimization algorithms for solving reliability-constrained optimization problems. Therefore, solution quality and convergence to global optimality cannot be guaranteed. Aiming to address this issue, two salient mathematical models are introduced in this paper for topology-variable-based reliability evaluation of both radial and radially-operated meshed...

An analytical method to consider DG impacts on distribution system reliability

    , Article 2005 IEEE/PES Transmission and DistributionConference and Exhibition - Asia and Pacific, Dalian, 15 August 2005 through 18 August 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages 1-6 ; 0780391144 (ISBN); 9780780391147 (ISBN) Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Rajabi Ghahnavie, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Distributed generation is expected to play an increasing role in emerging power systems. They use different type of resources and technologies to serve energy to power system. DG has positive and negative effects for both the utilities and customers. System and load point reliability indices are normally improved if DG is installed in a distribution network. On the other hand, DG has some specific characteristics which distinguish it from conventional generating units. Therefore, they should not be treated as conventional generating units to perform reliability evaluation. An appropriate model is required to be developed in order to assess impacts of DG on reliability indices. Impacts of DG...

An Milp model for switch, DG, and tie line placement to improve distribution grid reliability

    Abstract
Remote controlled switches (RCSs) have the ability to isolate the faulted area from other parts of the distribution system. On the other hand, the dispatchable distributed generators (DDGs) and tie lines can supply the interrupted loads after fault occurrence trough microgrids and reduce the outage time. In this regard, this article proposes a planning model for simultaneous placement of RCSs, DDGs, and tie lines to improve distribution system reliability. The presence of renewable distributed generations (RDGs) and energy storage systems, which have an increasing penetration in today's distribution networks are also considered. Moreover, two different practical load shedding methods are...

An efficient mixed-integer linear formulation for long-term overhead lines maintenance scheduling in power distribution systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 24, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 2043-2053 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Abiri Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Abbasi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents an efficient mixed-integer linear formulation for long term maintenance schedule of overhead lines. The proposed formulation is based on risk management approach and utilizes the model of decoupled risk factors. The proposed methodology yields a significant computational saving comparing to the previously reported dynamic programming. Risk management approach enables the asset managers to consider the actual condition of electrical equipment and expected consequence of their failures. Furthermore, the decoupled risk strategy in conjunction with the mixed-integer linear programming formulation establishes a precise description of time-dependent deterioration failure rate...

Distribution system reliability enhancement using optimal capacitor placement

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 2, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 621-631 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Failure statistics of most utilities indicate that distribution systems make the greatest individual contribution to the unavailability of supply to customers. Optimal capacitor placement in distribution systems has a number of advantages such as reducing losses, improving voltage profile, improving power factor and so on. The conventional objective function of the optimal capacitor placement consists of the total cost of losses and investments. Since capacitors supply reactive loads locally, they improve the load-carrying capability of the lines and therefore play the same role as redundant lines. Thus, optimal capacitor placement can also improve the reliability indices of a distribution...
