    Abstract
Irrigation is not well represented in land surface, hydrological, and climate models. One way to account for irrigation is by assimilating satellite soil moisture data that contains irrigation signal with land surface models. In this study, the irrigation detection ability of SMAP enhanced 9 km and SMAP-Sentinel 1 (SMAP-S1), 3 km and 1 km soil moisture products are evaluated using the first moment (mean) and the second moment (variability) of soil moisture data. The SMAP enhanced 9 km soil moisture product lacks irrigation signals in an irrigated plain south of Urmia Lake, whereas SMAP-S1 products record irrigation signal in soil moisture variability. Despite observing higher variability...

    Abstract
Optimization methods for process integration of industrial networks presented so far have dealt with grass-root situation. For retrofit ones, the actual design of the existing heat exchanger network must be taken into account. Berntsson and Stromberg (1996) developed new Composite Curves for use in a targeting and options scanning in retrofitting. The aim of this development has been to create Pinch Technology based methods, with which the general problems with process integration in Retrofit can be treated. New Pinch Technology based curves for retrofitting of heat exchanger networks have provided a graphical representation of existing HEN, including heaters and utility levels, from which...

Evaluation of the seismic response of liquid storage tanks

    , Article 10th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Computing, Civil-Comp 2005, Rome, 30 August 2005 through 2 September 2005 ; 2005 ; 1905088000 (ISBN); 9781905088003 (ISBN) Bagheri, S ; Rofooei, F. R ; Bozorgnia, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the dynamic response of the anchored and unanchored flexible on-grade storage tanks under near-fault input ground motions has been investigated. For numerical analysis, an oil storage tank with its content has been modeled with the displacement-based elements using a general-purpose finite elements program. The fluid-structure interaction has been taken into account using the constraint equations. Non-linear behavior caused by the base uplift in unanchored tanks has been considered by implementing the gap elements between the tank base and the ground level. The results indicate that the non-linear behavior caused by the base uplift, leads to remarkable changes in most of the...

    Abstract
A mathematical model has been developed to simulate heterogeneous reactions with a complex set of physicochemical and thermal phenomena in a packed bed. These include the chemical reaction itself, the transport of gaseous species in the pores, the generation or consumption of heat by the reactions, and the transport of heat in the porous domain. Solution of complicated sets of governing equations is based upon the concept of a finite volume fully implicit approach. The model has then been applied to analyze the reduction of a hematite pellet in a moving packed bed reactor. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd

    Abstract
The casing treatment and flow injection upstream of the rotor tip are two effective approaches in suppressing instabilities or recovering from a fully developed stall. This paper presents numerical simulations for a high-speed transonic compressor rotor, NASA Rotor 37, applying a state-of-the-art design for the blade tip injection. This is characterized by introducing a jet flow directly into the casing treatment machined into the shroud. The casing treatment is positioned over the blade tip region and exceeds the impeller axially by ∼30 per cent of the tip chord both in the upstream and in the downstream directions. To numerically solve the governing equations, the three-dimensional finite...

    Abstract
This work aimed to evaluate trunk muscle forces, internal loads and stability margin under some simulated standing postures, with and without external loads, using a nonlinear finite element model of the T1-S1 spine with realistic nonlinear load-displacement properties. A novel kinematics-based algorithm was applied that exploited a set of spinal sagittal rotations, initially calculated to minimize balancing moments, to solve the redundant active-passive system. The loads consisted of upper body gravity distributed along the spine with or without 200 N held in the hands, either in the front of the body or on the sides. Nonlinear and linear stability/perturbation analyses at deformed,...

    Abstract
It has always been a human challenge to inspire natural configurations and phenomena and benefit from their merits in improving the performances of man-made proposed aero/hydro vehicles. For example, the manta rays are known for their great swimming performances. To design and fabricate an underwater robot based on the manta ray geometry and its kinematic characteristics, it is important to initially study its hydrodynamic behavior and possibly arrive at some key design parameters, which can remarkably help to figure out an optimum geometry with high swimming performances. The main objective of this study is to focus on the merits of gliding motion inspired by the manta ray fish considering...

    Abstract
The elastodynamic behavior of layered media consisting of an arbitrary combination of isotropic and transversely isotropic layers is of great importance for many engineering applications. In this work, some appropriate elastodynamic Green’s functions pertinent to both the displacement and the stress fields are devised so that the problems associated with the n-layer semi-infinite and infinite media with any combinations of transversely isotropic and isotropic layers subjected to surface and buried oblique time-harmonic annular loading can all be treated in a unified manner. The material degeneracy arising due to the scenarios where one or more regions are isotropic is also discussed and...

    Abstract
Multiphase flow is a challenging area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) due to their potential large topological change and close coupling between the interface and fluid flow solvers. As such, Lagrangian meshless methods are very well suited for solving such problems. In this paper, we present a new fully explicit incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics approach (EISPH) for solving multiphase flow problems. Assuming that the change in pressure between consecutive time-steps is small, due to small time steps in explicit solvers, an approximation of the pressure for following time-steps is derived. To verify the proposed method, several test cases including both single-phase and...

CoPA: Cold page awakening to overcome retention failures in STT-MRAM Based I/O Buffers

    Abstract
Performance and reliability are two prominent factors in the design of data storage systems. To achieve higher performance, recently storage system designers use DynamicDynamic RAMRAM (DRAM)-based buffers. The volatility of DRAM brings up the possibility of data loss and data inconsistency. Thus, a part of the main storage is conventionally used as the journal area to be able of recovering unflushed data pages in the case of power failure. Moreover, periodically flushing buffered data pages to the main storage is a common mechanism to preserve a high level of reliability. This scheme, however, leads to a considerable increase in storage write traffic, which adversely affects the performance....

    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
A high sensitive upper critical solution temperature (UCST) copolymer was synthesized through free radical copolymerization with acrylamide (AAm) and vinyl acetate (VA). The UCST behavior is due to a combination of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic potentials between copolymer chains. Turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, and rheology studies were used to determine the phase transition and aggregation behavior. It is indicated that copolymer with 80% AAm has a phase transition temperature between 38 and 38.2 °C, which is suitable for releasing fever medicine. Also, the temperature gradient for the complete dissolution of the copolymer is 2 °C. The molecular dynamics simulations at a...

    Abstract
In this study, a nonlinear observer for high-speed estimation of the sample surface topography in a small duration of the probe transient motion utilizing a 2DOF model of TR-AFM is proposed. Since the time duration to reach the steady-state periodic motion of the oscillating probe in conventional imaging methods is relatively high, the proposed nonlinear observer in this research is able to address this limitation and estimate the surface topography throughout transient oscillation of the microcantilever. With this aim, topography estimation process utilizing a Thau observer without any linearization of the system dynamics is designed and coupled with the system dynamics to achieve sample...
