    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 5 , 2007 , Pages 414-423 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Golafshani, A. A ; Tabeshpour, M. R ; Seif, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2007
    Abstract
The dynamic response of the leg (tether) of a Tension Leg Platform (TLP), subjected to axial load at the top of the leg, is presented. The structural model is very simple, but several complicated factors, such as foundation effect, buoyancy and simulated ocean wave load, are considered. As an application, the effect of added mass fluctuation on the dynamic response of the leg subjected to such a load is presented. This effect is important in the fatigue life study of tethers. A first order perturbation method is used, in order to formulate and solve the problem. The differential equation is solved by means of non-harmonic Fourier expansion, in terms of eigenfunctions obtained from a...

Eigenvectors of deformed Wigner random matrices

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; 18 November , 2020 Haddadi, F ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
We investigate eigenvectors of rank-one deformations of random matrices B = A + θuu* in which A ∈ RN×N is a Wigner real symmetric random matrix, θ ∈ R+, and u is uniformly distributed on the unit sphere. It is well known that for θ > 1 the eigenvector associated with the largest eigenvalue of B closely estimates u asymptotically, while for θ < 1 the eigenvectors of B are uninformative about u. We examine O(1/N) correlation of eigenvectors with u before phase transition and show that eigenvectors with larger eigenvalue exhibit stronger alignment with deforming vector through an explicit inverse law 1/θ*-x with θ* := θ + 1/θ. This distribution function will be shown to be the ordinary...

    Abstract
This paper presents a numerical scheme for stability analysis of the aeroelastic systems in the Laplace domain. The proposed technique, which is called the PP method, is proposed for when the aerodynamic model is represented in the Laplace domain and includes complicated transcendental expressions in terms of the Laplace variable. This method utilizes a matrix iterative procedure to find the eigenvalues of the system and generalizes the other methods such as the P and PK methods for prediction of the flutter conditions. The major advantage of this technique over the other approximate methods is true prediction of subcritical damping and frequency values of the aeroelastic modes. To examine...

Noise cancelation of epileptic interictal EEG data based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition

    , Article 2012 35th International Conference on Telecommunications and Signal Processing, TSP 2012 - Proceedings ; 2012 , Pages 591-595 ; 9781467311182 (ISBN) Hajipour, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Albera, L ; Merlet, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Denoising is an important preprocessing stage in some Electroencephalography (EEG) applications such as epileptic source localization. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for denoising the interictal EEG data. The proposed algorithm is based on Generalized Eigenvalue Decomposition of two covariance matrices of the observations. Since one of these matrices is related to the spike durations, we should estimate the occurrence time of the spike peaks and the exact spike durations. To this end, we propose a spike detection algorithm which is based on the available spike detection methods. The comparison of the results of the proposed algorithm with the results of two well-known ICA...

, Article Proceedings of the 8th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, ISSPIT 2008, 16 December 2008 through 19 December 2008, Sarajevo ; 2008 , Pages 233-237 ; 9781424435555 (ISBN) Hajipour, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Mamaghanian, H ; Abootalebi, V ; IEEE Signal Processing Society and IEEE Computer Society ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The activity generated in the brain in response to external stimulations which is named the evoked potential (EP) is typically buried in the background EEG. Because of the low signal to noise ratio ofEPs, it is difficult to record single trial evoked potentials. The traditional technique which is based on ensemble averaging destroys the dynamic information of single trials. In this paper, a new method has been proposed based on generalized eigen value decomposition to extract single trial EPs from single channel EEG recordings. The extraction of the N75-P100-N135 complex in simulated and actual visual evoked potentials is mainly taken under consideration. To illustrate the effectiveness of...

Denoising of ictal EEG data using semi-blind source separation methods based on time-frequency priors

    , Article IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics ; Volume 19, Issue 3 , July , 2015 , Pages 839-847 ; 21682194 (ISSN) Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Albera, L ; Merlet, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Removing muscle activity from ictal ElectroEncephaloGram (EEG) data is an essential preprocessing step in diagnosis and study of epileptic disorders. Indeed, at the very beginning of seizures, ictal EEG has a low amplitude and its morphology in the time domain is quite similar to muscular activity. Contrary to the time domain, ictal signals have specific characteristics in the time-frequency domain. In this paper, we use the time-frequency signature of ictal discharges as a priori information on the sources of interest. To extract the time-frequency signature of ictal sources, we use the Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) method. Then, we propose two time-frequency based semi-blind source...

Interictal EEG noise cancellation: GEVD and DSS based approaches versus ICA and DCCA based methods

    , Article IRBM ; Volume 36, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 20-32 ; 19590318 (ISSN) Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Albera, L ; Merlet, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Denoising is an important preprocessing stage in some ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) applications. For this purpose, Blind Source Separation (BSS) methods, such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Decorrelated and Colored Component Analysis (DCCA), are commonly used. Although ICA and DCCA-based methods are powerful tools to extract sources of interest, the procedure of eliminating the effect of sources of non-interest is usually manual. It should be noted that some methods for automatic selection of artifact sources after BSS methods exist, although they imply a training supervised step. On the other hand, in cases where there are some a prioriinformation about the subspace of...

Conformal upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Laplacian and Steklov problem

    , Article Journal of Functional Analysis ; Volume 261, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 3419-3436 ; 00221236 (ISSN) Hassannezhad, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, we find upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the conformal class of a compact Riemannian manifold (M,g). These upper bounds depend only on the dimension and a conformal invariant that we call "min-conformal volume". Asymptotically, these bounds are consistent with the Weyl law and improve previous results by Korevaar and Yang and Yau. The proof relies on the construction of a suitable family of disjoint domains providing supports for a family of test functions. This method is interesting for itself and powerful. As a further application of the method we obtain an upper bound for the eigenvalues of the Steklov problem in a domain with C1 boundary in a complete...

    Abstract
An assessment study of two different shunt FACTS devices for compensating disturbances due to voltage variation in power systems is presented in this paper. Namely, Static Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) are Considered in this study. Eigen Value analysis and nonlinear time domain simulations for starting motor, motor in load varying state and short circuit on motor terminals show that STATCOM DC Voltage regulation has a better performance Compared to that of SVC. The result that will be presented in the paper will prove the superiorly of STATCOM over SVC in increasing motor speeding up and improving system voltage profile particularly at starting. © 2005 IEEE

Oscillator strength calculations in color centers of diamond and the role of spin

    , Article European Physical Journal B ; Volume 39, Issue 4 , 2004 , Pages 441-446 ; 14346028 (ISSN) Heidari Saani, M ; Vesaghi, M. A ; Esfarjani, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A generalized Hubbard model based on a molecular approach is used to calculate many electron wavefunctions of diamond vacancies. We have calculated the oscillator strength of the dipole transition rates from the ground states of the neutral and negatively charged vacancies. The ratio of the oscillator strengths is in very good quantitative agreement with the reported optical spectroscopic data. Electronic configurations in the ground and dipole allowed excited states are presented. With the proposed picture, the much larger oscillator strength of the negatively charged vacancy with respect to other experimentally investigated color centers N-V, H3, X3 and H4 is explained

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 89, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 20-52 ; 00295981 (ISSN) Hejranfar, K ; Kamali Moghadam, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Three preconditioners proposed by Eriksson, Choi and Merkel, and Turkel are implemented in a 2D upwind Euler flow solver on unstructured meshes. The mathematical formulations of these preconditioning schemes for different sets of primitive variables are drawn, and their eigenvalues and eigenvectors are compared with each other. For this purpose, these preconditioning schemes are expressed in a unified formulation. A cell-centered finite volume Roe's method is used for the discretization of the preconditioned Euler equations. The accuracy and performance of these preconditioning schemes are examined by computing steady low Mach number flows over a NACA0012 airfoil and a two-element...

    Abstract
Synchronization among a set of networked nodes has attracted much attention in different fields. This paper thoroughly investigates linear formulation of the Kuramoto model, with and without frustration, for an arbitrarily weighted undirected network where all nodes may have different intrinsic frequencies. We develop a mathematical framework to estimate errors of the linear approximation for globally and locally coupled networks. We mathematically prove that the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the network's Laplacian matrix is enough for examining synchrony alignment and that the functionality of this vector depends on the corresponding eigenvalue. Moreover, we prove...

    Abstract
In the free vibration analysis of beams, the inclusion of an intermediate sliding connection with an attached mass-spring system has not been yet treated. The present paper studies the free vibrations of uniform Euler-Bernoulli beams with an intermediate sliding connection and joined by a mass-spring system. Two different types of beams are considered. The Type 1 is attached with a single-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system and the Type 2 is attached with a two-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system. The ends of both beams are elastically restrained against rotation and translation. First, the eigenvalue problems including differential equations and boundary conditions are introduced. Then,...
