Size-dependent interaction of an edge dislocation with an elliptical nano-inhomogeneity incorporating interface effects

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 49, Issue 5 , March , 2012 , Pages 759-770 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Ahmadzadeh Bakhshayesh, H ; Gutkin, M. Y
    2012
    Abstract
The elastic behavior of an edge dislocation, which is positioned outside of a nanoscale elliptical inhomogeneity, is studied within the interface elasticity approach incorporating the elastic moduli and surface tension of the interface. The complex potential function method is used. The dislocation stress field and the image force acting on the dislocation are found and analyzed in detail. The difference between the solutions obtained within the classical-elasticity and interface-elasticity approaches is discussed. It is shown that for the stress field, this difference can be significant in those points of the inhomogeneity-matrix interface, where the radius of curvature is smaller and which...

Surface/interface effect on the scattered fields of an anti-plane shear wave in an infinite medium by a concentric multi-coated nanofiber/nanotube

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids ; Volume 32 , 2012 , Pages 21-31 ; 09977538 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Pahlevani, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the scattering of anti-plane shear waves in an infinite matrix containing a multi-coated nanofiber/nanotube is studied. Based on the fact that the surface to volume ratio for nano-size objects increases, the usual classical theories which generally neglect the surface/interface effects fail to provide reasonable results. Therefore, to analyze the problem the wave-function expansion method is coupled with the surface/interface elasticity theory. In order to provide some quantitative results through consideration of several examples, the knowledge of the relevant surface and/or interface properties of the corresponding constituent materials are required. For this reason, part of...

    , Article Geotechnical and Geological Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 1 , Oct , 2012 , Pages 163-171 ; 09603182 (ISSN) Bahador, M ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
An experimental study is conducted to measure small-strain shear modulus of clay-cement mixture using bender element apparatus setup in a triaxial cell. Bender element tests were conducted on cement-treated soils and the results were analyzed to study the variation of shear modulus properties of soil specimens at different cement contents, confining pressures, curing times, and compaction moisture contents. Based on the obtained results increasing the cement ratio has a significant effect on the small-strain shear modulus of the treated soils, and this effect signifies with increasing the moisture content and curing time. Rates of shear modulus enhancements due to cement content, curing...

A combined first principles and analytical treatment for determination of the surface elastic constants: Application to Si(001) ideal and reconstructed surfaces

    , Article Philosophical Magazine Letters ; Volume 92, Issue 1 , Sep , 2012 , Pages 7-19 ; 09500839 (ISSN) Ojaghnezhad, F ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Behavior of nanostructures, which are characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio, is greatly influenced by their surface parameters, such as surface elastic moduli tensor. Accurate determination of the surface elastic constants by first principles is of particular interest. To this end, through consideration of the fundamental thermodynamic arguments for free solid surfaces, an analytical formulation for the change in specific Helmholtz surface free energy is developed. Relating this formulation to the corresponding energy calculated via first principles leads to the determination of the surface elastic moduli tensor. The surface mechanical properties, namely surface energy, surface...

Experimental study on dynamic properties of sand with emphasis on the degree of saturation

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 26-41 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Sadeghi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Cyclic drained and undrained tests were performed in a modified simple shear device in order to specifically investigate the effect of saturation ratio on shear modulus and damping parameters of sand. In addition to the degree of saturation, the effects of number of cycles, vertical consolidation stress, shear strain amplitude and relative density on dynamic properties of sand were investigated. Dynamic stiffness and damping characteristic were found to be substantially independent of saturation ratio in the range of 25-75%. However, by approaching the full saturation state, the values of modulus fall sharply and damping of loose samples increases dramatically from corresponding values of...

Dynamic parameters of saturated and unsaturated sand at different ranges of shear strain levels in cyclic simple shear tests

, Article 14th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering ; 2011 Jafarzadeh, F ; Golshan, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In order to evaluate dynamic properties of Babolsar and Toyoura sands at saturation levels of 25, 50, 75 & 100%, a series of cyclic simple shear tests were carried out. The SGI type cyclic simple shear device was used to study the shear modulus, G, and damping ratio, D, of the above mentioned sands at cyclic shear strain of 0.5, 5 & 10%. The effect of degree of saturation (S), vertical consolidation stress (σ vc) and number of loading cycles (N) were investigated. On the basis of the tests results, the shear modulus approximately remains constant by change of degree of saturation from 25 to 50% and decreases when reaches the degree of saturation 75%. Damping ratio approximately is constant...

A novel nonlinear constitutive relation for graphene and its consequence for developing closed-form expressions for Young's modulus and critical buckling strain of single-walled carbon nanotubes

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 222, Issue 1-2 , 2011 , Pages 91-101 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Delfani, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are viewed as rolled graphene. Thus, an appropriate formulation describing the behavior of CNTs must contain the key information about both their initial configuration as graphene and final configuration as CNT.On this note, to date, somemodels, in particular based on the Cauchy- Born rule, for the description of CNTs behavior exist. A simplifying assumption in some of these models is that the length and perimeter of the CNT equal the corresponding dimensions of the unrolled initial configuration, thus neglecting the induced hoop and longitudinal strains. On the other hand, the present work offers a purely nonlinear continuum model suitable for the description of the...

Nanoindentation of isotactic polypropylene: Correlations between hardness, yield stress, and modulus on the local and global scales

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 121, Issue 2 , February , 2011 , Pages 930-938 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Lesan Khosh, R ; Bagheri, R ; Asgari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The correlations between the hardness, yield stress, and modulus of elasticity of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were evaluated on the local and global scales. Nanoindentation and traditional macromechanical tests were incorporated for this purpose. Thus, local and global mechanical properties were measured at various temperatures and strain rates. A certain relation was found between the local and global mechanical properties. Moreover, Johnson's model (developed according to the expanding cavity model) was also evaluated at various temperatures and strain rates. The Johnson model was valid only for the yield stresses obtained by nanoindentation and compressive tests and also the elastic...

Calculation of thermodynamic properties of Ni nanoclusters via selected equations of state based on molecular dynamics simulations

    , Article Solid State Communications ; Volume 151, Issue 14-15 , 2011 , Pages 965-970 ; 00381098 (ISSN) Akbarzadeh, H ; Abroshan, H ; Taherkhani, F ; Parsafar, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We present an approach for constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations. This approach is especially designed for finite systems, for which no periodic boundary condition applies. A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for Ni nanoclusters is used to calculate their pressurevolumetemperature (pvT) data for the temperature range 200 K≤T≤400 K, and pressures up to 600 kbar. Isothermal sets of pvT data were generated by the simulation; each set was fitted by three equations of state (EoSs): Linear Isotherm Regularity-II (LIRII), BirchMurnaghan (BM), and EOS III. It is found that the MD data are satisfactorily reproduced by the EoSs with reasonable precision. Some features of the EoSs criteria,...

Impact of void ratio and state parameters on the small strain shear modulus of unsaturated soils

    , Article 15th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2015: New Innovations and Sustainability ; 2015 , Pages 241-246 Khosravi, A ; Gheibi, A ; Rahimi, M ; McCartney, J. S ; Haeri, S. M
    Abstract
The unsaturated small strain shear modulus, Gmax, is a key reference value in predicting relationships between dynamic shear modulus and shear strain amplitude and is thus a key quantity to properly model the behavior of dynamically-loaded geotechnical systems such as pavements, rail beds, and machine foundations. From the interpretation of the experimental Gmax results for unsaturated soils, different definitions of trends between Gmax and the stress state of the unsaturated soils and material properties are proposed. However, in most of trends, the relationship between the stress state and void ratio is considered and the effect of void ratio on the unsaturated small strain shear modulus...

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 15 August 2010 through 18 August 2010 ; Volume 4 , 2010 , Pages 547-554 ; 9780791844120 (ISBN) Pasharavesh, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Alizadeh Vaghasloo, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nonlinear vibration of a microbeam actuated by a suddenly applied voltage with considering the effect of voltage distribution on the beam due to electrical resistivity of beam is investigated. Homotopy perturbation method is implemented to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of motion. The vibration frequency variation and damping at various resistivities is studied. Considering resistivity, effect of applied voltage and beam length on the frequency shift and damping ratio is analyzed. Findings indicate there exists a jump in frequency shift and damping ratio at a critical resistivity. Variation of critical resistivity with respect to modulus of elasticity and beam...

    Abstract
Surfaces and interfaces behave differently from their bulk counterparts especially when the dimensions approach small scales. The recent studies have shown that the surface/interface free energy (surface stress) plays an important role in the effective mechanical properties of solids with nanosized inhomogeneities. In this work, within a micromechanical framework, the effect of surface stress is taken into account to obtain a macroscopic yield function for nanoporous materials containing cylindrical nanovoids. Gurtin-Murdoch model of surface elasticity is incorporated in the generalized self-consistent method to obtain a closed-form expression for the transverse shear modulus of transversely...

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 117, Issue 1 , March , 2010 , Pages 361-367 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Montazeri, A ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this article, a multiscale modeling procedure is implemented to study the effect of interphase on the Young's modulus of CNT/polymer composites. For this purpose, a three-phase RVE is introduced which consists of three components, i.e., a carbon nanotube, an interphase layer, and an outer polymer matrix. The nanotube is modeled at the atomistic scale using molecular structural mechanics. Moreover, three-dimensional elements are employed to model the interphase layer and polymer matrix. The nanotube and polymer matrix are assumed to be bonded by van der Waals interactions based on the Lennard-Jones potential at the interface. Using this Molecular Structural Mechanics/Finite Element...

Mechanical properties of graphene cantilever from atomic force microscopy and density functional theory

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 21, Issue 18 , 2010 ; 09574484 (ISSN) Rasuli, R ; Iraji Zad, A ; Ahadian, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
We have studied the mechanical properties of a few-layer graphene cantilever (FLGC) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The mechanical properties of the suspended FLGC over an open hole have been derived from the AFM data. Force displacement curves using the Derjaguin-Müller-Toporov (DMT) and the massless cantilever beam models yield a Young modulus of Ec ∼ 37, Ea ∼ 0.7TPa and a Hamakar constant of ∼ 3 × 10 -18J. The threshold force to shear the FLGC was determined from a breaking force and modeling. In addition, we studied a graphene nanoribbon (GNR), which is a system similar to the FLGC; using density functional theory (DFT). The in-plane Young's modulus for the GNRs were calculated from...

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings, 13 November 2009 through 19 November 2009 ; Volume 14 , 2010 , Pages 359-364 ; 9780791843871 (ISBN) Azadi, M ; Damircheli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, nonlinear radial and hoop thermoelastic stress analysis of rotating disk made of functionally graded material (FGM) with variable thickness is carried out by using the finite element method. In this method, one-dimensional second order elements with three nodes have been used. The geometrical and boundary conditions are in the shape of nonexistence of the pressure (zero radial stress) in both external and internal layers and zero displacement at the internal layer of rotating disk. Furthermore, it's assumed that heat distribution is as second order curve while material properties such as elasticity modulus, Poisson's ratio and thermal expansion coefficient vary by using a...

Effective shear modulus of solids reinforced by randomly oriented-/aligned-elliptic nanofibers in couple stress elasticity

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Volume 117 , 2017 , Pages 150-164 ; 13598368 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Alemi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Nowadays, by adding a small amount (about 0.5–5% by weight) of a desired nanomaterial to a matrix having certain properties one may design a multifunctional nanocomposites with a remarkably improved macroscopic properties of interest. The capability of conventional continuum theories in treating the problems of embedded ultra-small inhomogeneity with any of its dimensions comparable to the characteristic lengths of the involved constituent phases is questioned, mainly, on the grounds of the accuracy and the size effect. The micromechanical framework based on the Eshelby's ellipsoidal inclusion theory [1] which has been widely used to estimate the overall behavior of composites falls under...
