    Abstract
Partial discharge (PD) is a common phenomenon which occurs in insulation of high voltage equipments, such as; transformers and has a damaging effect on the insulation. If data mining techniques be used to find specifications and features of different types of partial discharges in power transformers, one can monitor the insulation condition of such equipment online and continuously. Those results can be employed to develop preventive measures more exactly and consequently the maintenance would require less time and cost for electric utility and improve the life time expectancy of the transformers. In this paper experiments are set up to create models for some types of PD that occurs in Power...

    Abstract
Congestion management is one of the most important functions of independent system operator (ISO) in the restructured power system. This paper presents two new methodologies for optimal sitting and sizing of distributed generations (DGs) in the restructured power systems for congestion management. The proposed methodologies are based upon locational marginal price (LMP) and congestion rent that forms a priority list of candidate buses to reduce the solution space. The proposed priority list facilitates the optimal placement as well as the level of output power of DGs. The proposed methods are implemented on the IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 57-bus test systems to illustrate their effectiveness. An...

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 51, Issue 10 , 2010 , Pages 1947-1957 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Siahkali, H ; Vakilian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Wind power is a promising alternative in power generation because of its tremendous environmental and social benefits. Generation scheduling (GS) is more important in a power system integrating wind farms. Unlike conventional power generation sources, wind power generators supply intermittent power because of uncertainty in resource. This paper presents a fuzzy approach to the generation scheduling problem of a GenCo considering uncertainties in parameters or constraints such as load, reserve and available wind power generation. The modeling of constraints is an important issue in power system scheduling. A fuzzy optimization approach is an approach that can be used to obtain the generation...

    Abstract
Integration of wind power generation creates new concerns for operation engineers in a power system. Unlike conventional power generation sources, wind power generators supply intermittent power due to uncertainty in parameters of wind such as its velocity. This paper presents probabilistic model for load and wind power uncertainty which can be used in operation planning (with durations up to one or two years). A stochastic model is proposed to simulate the status of units that are directly affected by the load and wind power generation uncertainties. This paper develops a solution method for generation scheduling of power system, while taking into account the stochastic behavior of the load...

Demand response scheduling by stochastic SCUC

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 1, Issue 1 , May , 2010 , Pages 89-98 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Parvania, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Considerable developments in the real-time telemetry of demand-side systems allow independent system operators (ISOs) to use reserves provided by demand response (DR) in ancillary service markets. Currently, many ISOs have designed programs to utilize the reserve provided by DR in electricity markets. This paper presents a stochastic model to schedule reserves provided by DR in the wholesale electricity markets. Demand-side reserve is supplied by demand response providers (DRPs), which have the responsibility of aggregating and managing customer responses. A mixed-integer representation of reserve provided by DRPs and its associated cost function are used in the proposed stochastic model....

    , Article 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2013 ; 2013 , 14-16 May ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Riahinia, S ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Moeini Aghtaie, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The penetration of wind energy in power systems has been growing due to its interminable and mild environmental effects. The intrinsic attributes of this environmentally-friendly energy, i.e., the stochastic nature of wind farms generation, however, imposes various technical and financial challenges into power systems. So, developing an accurate wind farm modeling approach aimed at taking into account the wind generation intermittency can relieve many of these challenges. Therefore, this paper takes a step to an efficient wind farm modeling procedure employing an accurate as well as well-known Neural Network (NN)-based tool. The proposed approach is comprised of two main steps. The wind...

    , Article European Transactions on Electrical Power ; Volume 21, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 1437-1454 ; 1430144X (ISSN) Rajabi Ghahnavieh, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Feuillet, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the United States electricity market standard, when several transmission service requests (TSRs) are made for a specific pair of power injection/extraction points, the independent system operator (ISO) must allocate the available transmission capability (ATC) associated with the pair to the requests. An ATC allocation must determine the amount of accepted requests as well as the priority of the accepted requests during emergencies. The requests could have different types (recallable/non-recallable), tariffs, and time frames and these factors must be properly considered in ATC allocation. This paper proposes a method for optimal ATC allocation in the planning horizon which incorporates the...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new framework for evaluating contribution of wind farms in operational reliability level of power systems. In this regard, at first, it provides a short-term analytical model well designed to represent intermittent and uncertain nature of wind power. Combining the attained multi-state model of wind farms with the other committed generating units, operational risk of the system is evaluated. The concept of Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM), previously developed to assess the short-term/mid-term reliability of conventional generating units, is revisited in this paper to more practically incorporate wind farms in reliability studies of the power system. The proposed...

    Abstract
Refrigerators have considerable share of residential consumption. They can be, however, flexible loads because their operating time and consumption patterns can be changed to some extent. Accordingly, they can be selected as a target for the study of Demand Side Management plans. In this paper, two experimental models for a refrigerator are derived. In obtaining the first model, following assumptions are made: the ambient temperature of refrigerator is assumed to be constant and the refrigerator door is remained closed. However, in the second model the variation of ambient temperature and door-opening effects are considered according to some general patterns. Further, two strategies are...

This study proposes a reliability model for DFIG wind turbines considering their subcomponent failure rates and downtimes. The proposed production estimation algorithm leads to an economic assessment for wind farms. A comprehensive spare parts management procedure is then presented in the study. As a case study,...

Fuzzy based generation scheduling of power system with large scale wind farms

, Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future ; 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Siahkali, H ; Vakilian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Wind power introduces a new challenge to system operators. Unlike conventional power generation sources, wind power generators supply intermittent power because of uncertainty in its resource. In a power system involved largescale wind power generation scenario, wind intermittency could oblige the system operator to allocate a greater reserve power, in order to compensate the possible mismatch between predicted and the actual wind power output. This would increase the total operation cost. This paper presents a new approach in fuzzy based generation scheduling (GS) problem using mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). While the reserve requirements, load generation balance and wind...

, Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future, 28 June 2009 through 2 July 2009 ; 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Kazemi, S ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sanaye Pasand, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Implementation of Distribution Automation (DA) in electric power distribution systems can result in customer satisfaction with improved reliability, consistent quality and high-tech services. Loop Restoration Strategy (LRS) is a special DA method in the feeder level which is used by electric utilities to improve distribution system reliability. The effects of the implemented LRS on the reliability indices of a given distribution system mainly depend on its Automatic Control System (ACS). Selecting the type of ACS of LRS by electric utilities relies on the level of improvement required at load points and system oriented reliability indices. A step by step evaluation procedure is proposed in...

    Abstract
There is a global tendency towards using Distributed Generation (DG) and renewable energy resources. Considering low utilization cost and low undesirable environmental effects, wind farms have become a considerable resource for producing electrical energy in many countries. Since Wind farms are not programmable and their power output which depends on weather and wind speed is uncertain, they create problems for utilizing electricity system. There are different methods for preserving system stability against the uncertainty of wind power plants. Optimal utilization of pumped storage and gas resources is one of the approaches for reducing production risk of wind farms. In this paper, it is...

    , Article 2017 25th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2017, 2 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 1159-1164 ; 9781509059638 (ISBN) Heidarabadi, H ; Hosseini, S. H ; Ranjbar, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Penetration of renewable energy resources in power systems and their uncertain natures have caused some challenges in a Real-Time Markets (RTMs) such as price forecasting and balancing issues. Independent System Operator's (ISO's) introduced flexible ramp products in RTMs to overcome this problem. In this paper, a novel method is presented for scheduling flexible ramp requirements in RTM considering Demand Response (DR). In this method, net load uncertainty is modeled using robust optimization (RO) technique in which each period is defined by some scenarios and RO is used to model the uncertainty of each scenario. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, a typical case study is...

Voltage regulation in private environments: opportunity or threat

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; 2017 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Gharebaghi, S ; Safdarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
Historically, the general target of affecting demand via voltage regulation was conservation, i.e., reducing peak demand and/or accumulated energy. In private environments however, profit maximization may take place of conservation, regardless of the social welfare and consumers' costs. This letter aims at highlighting the effectiveness of voltage regulation as a measure to maximize utilities' profit. The new strategy can indeliberately cause more payments for customers. The letter simulates different cases which reveal importance of the role regulatory bodies have to play to prevent unethical actions in private environments. IEEE

    , Article IET Renewable Power Generation ; Volume 11, Issue 7 , 2017 , Pages 1049-1057 ; 17521416 (ISSN) Toulabi, M ; Bahrami, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2017
    Abstract
This study investigates the dynamic participation of wind power plants (WPPs) in the automatic generation control (AGC) task. The pre-specified model of wind farm in the AGC studies has been used. It is shown that operating of WPPs at the command mode results in a significant improvement in the frequency behaviour of power system due to their faster response. However, the WPPs may change their operation mode from the command mode to the maximum power point mode according to the wind speed conditions and load variations. This reduces the improvement in the frequency response. In this condition, the shortage in the wind power should be compensated by the conventional units. Thus, the share of...
