All-optical set-reset flip-flop based on frequency bistability in semiconductor microring lasers

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 282, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 2451-2456 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Zakeri, S ; Mirzaee, M. A ; Ghaderi, Z ; Farman, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The electric field of the modes of semiconductor microring lasers (SMRLs) in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are linear combinations of the clock wise (CW) and the counter clock wise (CCW) electric fields. The mode structures can be controlled by the waveguide reflection coefficients. The power ratio and phase difference of the CW and CCW fields of one mode is proportional to the ratio of the reflection coefficients of the left and right waveguides. It is shown that the degenerate CW and CCW modes in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are split into two modes with different frequencies. Employing these new modes, SMRL can be used as an element to design flip-flops used in...

Stimuli-responsive chitosan as an advantageous platform for efficient delivery of bioactive agents

    , Article Journal of Controlled Release ; Volume 317 , 2020 , Pages 216-231 Sabourian, P ; Tavakolian, M ; Yazdani, H ; Frounchi, M ; van de Ven, T. G. M ; Maysinger, D ; Kakkar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Despite a diverse range of active pharmaceutical agents currently at our disposal, high morbidity rate diseases continue to pose a major health crisis globally. One of the important parameters in this regard is the controlled cargo delivery at desired sites. Among a variety of synthetic and natural macromolecular systems, chitosan, an abundant biopolymer, offers a platform for tailored architectures that could have high loading capacity of cargo, target and deliver. Stimuli directed accumulation of vehicles and drug release is an area of direct relevance to biomedical applications. In this review, we highlight essential characteristics of modified chitosan that present themselves for...

Experimental determination of natural convection heat transfer coefficient in a vertical flat-plate solar air heater

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 82, Issue 10 , 2008 , Pages 903-910 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Hatami, N ; Bahadorinejad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this study, natural convection heat transfer in a vertical flat-plate solar air heater of 2.5 m height and 1 m width, with one- and two-glass covers was studied experimentally. Totally six cases of airflow (two for air heater with one glass cover and four for air heater with two-glass covers) were considered. These cases included states that air could flow within spaces between absorber plate and glass covers or air was enclosed in such spaces. Absorber plate temperature, back-plate temperature, glass cover temperatures, mass flow rates of air within channels and the solar radiation were measured. The following relations are suggested:. For channels in which air could flow:Nu = 0.7362...

Dynamic analysis of electrorheological fluid sandwich cylindrical shells with functionally graded face sheets using a semi-analytical approach

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 295 , 2022 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Shahali, P ; Haddadpour, H ; Shakhesi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The present research is performed to calculate the natural frequencies, loss factors, and associated mode shapes of a sandwich cylinder with moderately thick functionally graded (FG) face sheets and an electrorheological (ER) fluid core. Each face sheet is assumed to be made of FG materials, and its displacement field is estimated based on the first-order shear deformation theory, like the ER constrained layer. A suitable displacement continuity condition is considered between layers. The ER fluid used in the central middle is analyzed in the pre-yield area and considered electric field dependent. Hamilton's principle is used to acquire the motion equations related to each layer and...

Antibiotic-loaded chitosan–Laponite films for local drug delivery by titanium implants: cell proliferation and drug release studies

    , Article Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine ; Volume 26, Issue 12 , December , 2015 ; 09574530 (ISSN) Ordikhani, F ; Dehghani, M ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Kluwer Academic Publishers  2015
    Abstract
Abstract: In this study, chitosan–Laponite nanocomposite coatings with bone regenerative potential and controlled drug-release capacity are prepared by electrophoretic deposition technique. The controlled release of a glycopeptide drug, i.e. vancomycin, is attained by the intercalation of the polymer and drug macromolecules into silicate galleries. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry reveals electrostatic interactions between the charged structure of clay and the amine and hydroxyl groups of chitosan and vancomycin, leading to a complex positively-charged system with high electrophoretic mobility. By applying electric field the charged particles are deposited on the surface of titanium...

Microstructural study of a High Bainite Dual Phase (HBDP) steel austempered at different temperatures

    , Article Defect and Diffusion Forum ; Volume 297-301 , 2010 , Pages 62-67 ; 10120386 (ISSN); 3908451809 (ISBN); 9783908451808 (ISBN) Bakhtiari, R ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Trans Tech Publications Ltd  2010
    Abstract
4340 steel bars were austenitized at 850°C for 1 hour followed by heating at 700°C (ferrite and austenite region) for 90 min and quenching into a salt bath with different temperatures of 300, 350, 400 and 450°C. The steel bars were held for 1 hour at these temperatures before air cooling to room temperature. Various ferrite-bainite microstructures with 34% volume fraction of ferrite and different bainite morphologies were obtained. The results of SEM studies showed that by increasing the austempering temperature, the morphology of bainite varies from lower to upper bainite. According to the T-T-T diagram of the studied steel, the bainite transformation will not complete for the holding time...

Dynamics of electrostatic interaction and electrodiffusion in a charged thin film with nanoscale physicochemical heterogeneity: Implications for low-salinity waterflooding

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 650 , 2022 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Pourakaberian, A ; Mahani, H ; Niasar, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
The slow kinetics of wettability alteration toward a more water-wetting state by low-salinity waterflooding (LSWF) in oil-brine-rock (OBR) systems is conjectured to be pertinent to the electrokinetic phenomena in the thin brine film. We hypothesize that the nanoscale physicochemical heterogeneities such as surface roughness and surface charge heterogeneity at the rock/brine interface control further the dynamics of electrodiffusion and electrostatic disjoining pressure (Πel), thus the time-scale and the magnitude of the low salinity effect (LSE). In this regard, film-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed. The coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations were...
