    Abstract
Network Coding (NC) is an emerging technique that helps wireless networks to have higher throughput and better energy efficiency. In this paper, a novel network coding-aware routing (S-NC) which uses NC to improve reliability and robustness in unreliable WSNs is proposed. It is based on a structure-free routing algorithm as the underlying routing engine which employs neighbor queue length to increase coding opportunity; while exploiting a spatial coding method to control the amount of redundancy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the topic of network codingaware routing in Wsns. Simulation results in Tossim demonstrate that S-NC significantly improves the performance...

    Abstract
Data aggregation is an efficient method to conserve energy by reducing packet transmissions in WSNs. However, providing end-to-end data reliability is a major challenge when the network uses data aggregation. In this case, a packet loss can miss a complete subtree of values, thus greatly affecting the final results. Data transmission in multiple paths can tolerate this problem, but it may incur some computation errors for duplicate-sensitive aggregates. In this paper, we propose a Flexible Overlay Multi-path data Aggregation protocol (FOMA) which uses the available path redundancy to deliver a correct aggregate result to the sink with high reliability in an energy-efficient manner. It...

    Abstract
A new strategy for enhancing the efficiency and reducing the production cost of TiO 2 solar cells by design of a new formulated TiO 2 paste with tailored crystal structure and morphology is reported. The conventional three- or four-fold layer deposition process was eliminated and replaced by a single layer deposition of TiO 2 compound. Different TiO 2 pastes with various crystal structures, morphologies and crystallite sizes were prepared by an aqueous particulate sol-gel process. Based on simultaneous differential thermal (SDT) analysis the minimum annealing temperature to obtain organic-free TiO 2 paste was determined at 400°C, being one of the lowest crystallization temperatures of TiO 2...

    Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are composed of hundreds or thousands of small nodes, which work together and associate with a specific task or tasks to do. It is expected that wireless sensor networks will be used widely in many applications in the near future. One of the most important issues in WSNs is localisation. There are crucial problems over network localisation such as security attacks (internal or external), energy efficiency, and accuracy, which impact performance and energy-consuming of wireless sensor networks. The main source of these problems is network topology. A long-thin network topology (LTNT) in wireless sensor can produce errors in network localisation due to special...

    Abstract
One of the most conventional and energy efficient methods to improve the engineering properties of concrete is the utilization of waste materials and by-products. Among agricultural wastes, rice husk ash (RHA) has exhibited the greatest potential to enhance the characteristics of cement mixtures. However, the investigations on the properties and performance of RHA are slim compared to its potential advantages and few systematic studies can be found in the literature regarding parameters influencing the chemo-physical and microstructural characteristics of RHA along with its performance in cement mixtures. In this study, the effect of retention time of rice husk is systematically...

Reliability/energy trade-off in Bluetooth error control schemes

    , Article Microelectronics Reliability ; Volume 51, Issue 8 , August , 2011 , Pages 1398-1412 ; 00262714 (ISSN) Khodadoustan, S ; Jalali, F ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Two important objectives in wireless sensor networks are reliability and reducing energy consumption. Hence, overcoming energy constraints and utilizing error control schemes such as Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) are necessary to improve the energy efficiency and reliability. However, these two concerns are at odds, so there is a trade-off between them. Considering this point, the impact of various error control schemes on these objectives and the trade-off between them has been considered in Bluetooth networks recently. However, all these works consider ideal assumptions (e.g., perfect error detection) only. This work evaluates the energy-efficiency of...

    Abstract
Lifetime is the most important concern in wireless sensor networks due to limited battery power of sensor nodes. In this paper, we focus on designing an energy-efficient and energy-aware routing algorithm, LLR, to increase the operational lifetime of multi-hop wireless sensor networks in the presence of unreliable communication links. Our proposed protocol utilizes a parameter, Broadcasting Delay, in each node associated with the hop parameters passed by a route request packet to select long lifetime paths in the network. The key point in Broadcasting Delay formulation is that it includes both node and link specific parameters. We use two different scenarios: either the link layer...

    Abstract
The desire to decrease electrical loading by using energy efficient lighting has resulted in a high level of attention to replacing conventional incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). In Iran from energy management point of view, people are encouraged by ministry of power to use CFLs. Also after elimination of subsidies, the substantial increase in electric energy price resulted in a high level of penetration of CFLs in electricity grid. CFL is a nonlinear load, therefore it injects harmonic to the network. In past, due to lower application of CFL, these harmonics were ignored, however today by the widespread application of CFLs; these small sources are combined and have...

    Abstract
Most of the methods developed for efficiency estimation of distillation columns were based on the empirical mass transfer and hydraulic relations correlated to laboratory data. Therefore, these methods cannot estimate efficiency of industrial columns with sufficient accuracy. In this paper, a new and applicable method was developed for calculation of efficiency (and mass and heat transfer coefficients) of distillation columns containing structured packings. This method has potential advantages; e.g., it can calculate efficiency without using any empirical mass transfer and hydraulic correlations and models, and without the need to estimate the operational and hydraulic parameters of column....

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 73 , 2011 , Pages 1080-1083 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Pooranian, Z ; Barati, A ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Wireless sensor networks include small nodes which have sensing ability; calculation and connection extend themselves everywhere soon. Such networks have source limitation on connection, calculation and energy consumption. So, since the nodes have limited energy in sensor networks, the optimized energy consumption in these networks is of more importance and has created many challenges. The previous works have shown that by organizing the network nodes in a number of clusters, the energy consumption could be reduced considerably. So the lifetime of the network would be increased. In this paper, we used the Queen-bee algorithm to create energy efficient clusters in wireless sensor networks....

    Abstract
One of the most prominent issues in fully adiabatic circuits is the breaking reversibility problem; i.e., non-adiabatic energy dissipation in the last stage adiabatic gates whose outputs are connected to external circuits. In this paper, we show that the breaking reversibility problem can result in significant energy dissipation. Subsequently, we propose an efficient technique to address the breaking reversibility problem, which is applicable to the usual fully adiabatic logic such as 2LAL, SCRL, and RERL. Detailed SPICE simulations are used to evaluate the proposed technique. The experimental results show that the proposed technique can considerably reduce (e.g., about 74% for RERL, 35% for...
