Flexural Failure Mechanism of Concrete Beams Strengthened with FRP and Comparing The Result With Classic Method Of Strengthening

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahsiri, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Retrofitting of reinforced concrete and steel structures is a very important issue in Structural Engineering due to the reasons such as drawbacks in previous codes, revision of application of structures , destructive environmental factors and deficiencies in construction process.
Strengthening of structures with FRP composites is one of the methods that have been welcomed by researchers due to its unique properties including high tensile strength, light weight, simple application and resistance to corrosive environment. Although the main purpose of retrofitting is to increase the overall load carrying capacity of the structures, the failure mechanism of the strengthened member is also...

The Durability of Geopolymer Concrete Confined with Fiber Reinforced Polymer Materials

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Anvari Sakhvidi, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Material durability is quite critical in corrosive environments. In this study, two hundred and seventy geopolymer concrete specimens with different mix designs were prepared and then wrapped with two different fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. For 12960 hrs (eighteen months), the specimens were exposed to four different pHs (2.5, 7, 7.25, 12.5). The reliability and SEM analysis were performed after modeling the compressive strength over time. Based on the results, the reduction of the compressive strength was up to 22% in an acidic environment. The compressive strength of the specimens was increased up to 11 percent after alkaline solution exposure. The ductility of all specimens...

Ultrasonic Evaluation for the Detection of Contact Defects of the Timer and Fiber-reinforced Polymer (FRP)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ramezanpour, Moein (Author) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been used tremendously to repair and rehabilitate timber structures due to their formability, ease of use, and high specific strength. The quality of the bond between FRP and timber substrate is critical for having complete composite action. In this paper, a comprehensive set of linear and nonlinear ultrasonic methods was performed to investigate the bond between carbon-FRP (CFRP) and timber. For this purpose, one hundred and twenty-six specimens of reinforced timber were prepared. Two techniques were considered to bond CFRP and timber: 1) externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) and 2) externally bonded reinforcement on the groove (EBROG). The...

Dynamic Performance Enhancement of RC Slabs by Steel Fibers vs. Externally Bonded GFRP Sheets under Impact Loading

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Soltani, Hesam (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, to improve the dynamic behavior of Reinforced Concrete (RC) slabs under impact load, the methods of externally bonding Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets to slab and internally reinforcing concrete by steel fibers have been proposed. Nevertheless, it is required to investigate the comparison between these two methods on response of RC slabs under impact loads. In this study, the influence of volume fraction of steel fibers, the number of GFRP sheet layers (one or two) and the arrangement of GFRP sheets (covering the whole or parts of surface), are examined. Performance of fourteen mm concrete slabs including one plain slab, one steel RC slab, three steel RC slabs...

The effect of mechanical and thermal properties of FRP bars on their tensile performance under elevated temperatures

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 157 , 2017 , Pages 1001-1010 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Ashrafi, H ; Bazli, M ; Najafabadi, E. P ; Vatani Oskouei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this experimental study the effect of physical and thermal properties of various FRP bars on their performance under elevated temperatures are investigated. The parameters included the bars' diameter, type of fiber, type of resin, fiber to matrix ratio, and thermal properties were studied. Moreover, ANOVA (ANalysis Of VAriance) was performed in order to investigate the contribution of each variable on the obtained results. The results showed that in addition to the temperature, the bars' diameter, type of fiber, type of resin, and thermal properties (Tg and Td) of the FRP bars have contributions to the results, while the fiber to matrix ratio was found to be an ineffective factor. It was...

    Abstract
This research investigated the long-term environmental effects on the bond at the interface between fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and a masonry brick. Seven types of FRP fabrics were used and placed on the masonry brick using the wet lay-up technique. Unidirectional and bidirectional fibers made of aramid, carbon, and glass and also combination of these fabrics were used. A total of 525 specimens were exposed to five chemical solutions with pH values of 2.5, 7, 10, 12.5 and substitution sea water for 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. A chamber was also used to simulate the ultraviolent (UV) radiation on the specimens. A series of single-lap shear tests were performed on these specimens to determine...

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 223 , 2019 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Jafari, A ; Ashrafi, H ; Bazli, M ; Ozbakkaloglu, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
This study investigates the effect of Thermal cycles on the mechanical properties of GFRP pultruded profiles with different geometries. Bending specimens consisted of I-shaped and U-channel profiles that were tested in three-point bending along their both principal weak and strong axes, whereas box profiles and laminates were used in compression and tension tests, respectively. Each specimen was exposed to a range of thermal cycles, between −20 °C and 20 °C. The failure modes of the profiles were closely investigated at both major and minor scales. Results were analyzed using ANOVA to determine the influence of each factor and a model was developed to predict the strength retention of...

    Abstract
In this research, the mechanical properties of glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars with epoxy resin matrices embedded in concrete were investigated under an extensive range of elevated temperatures (i.e., 25–800 °C). Embedded FRP bars with various bar diameters were studied in order to determine bar diameter influence on the results. In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on the experimental results to investigate the contribution of exposure temperature and bar diameter to the tensile behavior of embedded in concrete FRP bars at elevated temperatures. The results show that the tensile strength of embedded FRP bars generally decreases with increasing...

Behavior of Concrete Slabs Reinforced with FRP Bars, Design and Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Adimi, Alireza (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite extensive studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs, especially those reinforced with steel rebars, no comprehensive studies have been conducted on the behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with FRP rebars. Therefore, there are some ambiguities regarding the tensile and compressive behavior of these rebars in the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete slabs (depending on their amount in the slab and their combination with steel rebars). Hence, in this study, in order to ensure the accuracy of numerical simulations, the numerical 3D simulation of a one-way concrete slab reinforced with tensile FRP rebars was performed using the finite element Abaqus software....
