Abstract
In the present study, the preconditioned incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the artificial compressibility method formulated in the generalized curvilinear coordinates are numerically solved by using a high-order compact finite-difference scheme for accurately and efficiently computing the incompressible flows in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. A fourth-order compact finite-difference scheme is utilized to accurately discretize the spatial derivative terms of the governing equations, and the time integration is carried out based on the dual time-stepping method. The capability of the proposed solution methodology for the computations of the steady and unsteady incompressible...

Abstract
In the present study, a high-order compact finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method is applied for accurately computing 3-D incompressible flows in the generalized curvilinear coordinates to handle practical and realistic geometries with curved boundaries and nonuniform grids. Herein, a fourth-order compact finite-difference scheme and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme are used for the discretization of the spatial derivatives and the temporal term, respectively, in the resulting 3-D nineteen discrete velocity lattice Boltzmann equation to...
Computational simulation of marangoni convection under microgravity condition

Abstract
In this work, the rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. In addition to general studies of microgravity effects, the initiation of hydrodynamic convection, solely due to the variations of interface curvature (surface tension force) and thus the generation of shearing forces at the interfaces, was also studied. Then, the variation of surface tension due to the temperature gradient (Marangoni convection), which can initiate the onset of convection even in the absence of buoyancy, was studied. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The...

Abstract
In the present study, shock-disturbances interaction in high-speed compressible inviscid flow is simulated utilizing the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme by employing the shock-capturing technique. For this aim, the two-dimensional Euler equations in strong conservative form are discretized by using the explicit third-order TVD Runge–Kutta scheme in time and the fifth-order WENO finite difference scheme in space. The main advantage of using the WENO scheme is its capability for properly solving the discontinuities in the domain without needing any artificial viscosity, limiter function or filter. Hence, this scheme is stable, and thus, it is suitable for simulating very...

Abstract
Short-circuit fault (SCF) detection is mandatory in a high voltage DC power supply (HVPS) to prevent fatal damage. The majority of converters employ a single sensor to detect the SCF. This attribute increases the interference vulnerability of the fault detection (FD) system in the presence of noise. Therefore, miss detections and false alarms are possible to occur. Miss detections and false alarms are harmful catastrophes in most applications. A commonly used method to suppress the noise impacts is using a low-bandwidth low-pass filter. However, the use of the low-bandwidth low-pass filter reduces the speed of FD due to the filter delay. This paper proposes a fast FD algorithm based on...

Abstract
Due to several advantages, three-phase Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converter is widely used in numerous applications nowadays. On the other hand, this converter is very vulnerable to Transistor Open-Circuit Fault (TOCF). Therefore, a fault-tolerant (FT) scheme has been proposed in this paper to solve the problem. First, normal and faulty conditions are investigated, and according to the results, a fault-diagnosis (FD) approach is introduced. Using the outcomes of FD unit, a new post-fault strategy is proposed for the converter. The FD method is based on the DC component of transformer phase currents, and the basis of FT technique is shedding the faulty phase. Some benefits of the proposed...

Abstract
In this paper, a fast and practical method is proposed for open-circuit (OC) fault diagnosis (FD) in a three-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (q-ZSI). Compared with the existing fast OC FD techniques in three-phase voltage source inverters, this method is more cost-effective since no ultrafast processor or high-speed measurement is required. Additionally, the method is independent of the load condition. The proposed method is only applicable to Z-source family inverters and is based on observing the effect of shoot-through intervals on the system variables during switching periods. The proposed algorithm includes two consecutive stages: OC detection and fault location identification. When both...

Abstract
This paper extends the analysis of solute dispersion in electrohydrodynamic flows to the case of band broadening in polyelectrolyte-grafted (soft) capillaries by accounting for the effects of ion partitioning, irreversible catalytic reaction and pulsatile flow actuation. In the Debye-Hückel limit, we present the benchmark solutions of electric potential and velocity distribution pertinent to steady and oscillatory mixed electroosmotic-pressure-driven flows in soft capillaries. Afterwards, the mathematical models of band broadening based on the Taylor-Aris theory and generalized dispersion method are presented to investigate the late-time asymptotic state and all-time evolution of...

Abstract
The objective of this work is to numerically study the fluid flow and acoustic field of a supersonic impinging jet by applying the vorticity confinement (VC) method. For this aim, the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the incorporation of the VC method are considered and the resulting system of equations is solved by using the sixth-order compact finite-difference scheme. To eliminate the numerical instability, a low-pass high-order filter is used. The nonreflective boundary conditions are applied for all the free boundaries and the radiated sound field is obtained by the Kirchhoff surface integration. Comparisons of the present results with the experimental data...

Abstract
This paper aims to develop a boundary control solution for complicated gantry crane coupled motions. In addition to the large angle sway motion, the crane cable has a flexural transverse vibration. The Hamilton principle has been utilized to derive the governing partial differential equations of motion. The control objectives which are sought include: moving the payload to the desired position; reducing the payload swing with large sway angle; and finally suppressing the cable transverse vibrations in the presence of boundary disturbances simultaneously. These simultaneous boundary control objectives make the problem challenging. The proposed control approach is based on the original...

Abstract
In this study, a coupling of a hydrologic and hydraulic model was utilized to assess the impacts of river geometry data resolution on the flood inundation characteristics in a data-scarce environment. Hydrological modeling incorporates soil conservation service curve-number (SCS-CN) and the geomorphologic based instantaneous unit hydrograph model (GIUH) to compute the direct runoff hydrograph in Kashkan river basin located in western Iran. 1D HEC-Geo-RAS model was used and performed to simulate inundation extent of 100-yr floods (~1800 m3/s) along 40 km reach of Kashkan river with a ground survey of river cross-section (2000 cross-sections, each including 500 data-points). The effect of...

Abstract
The formation damage (FD) caused by the invasion of drilling fluid severely affects reservoir performance during production. Most of the published research studies which address this type of FD have been carried out at the core or field scale. Thus, the main aim of the paper is to investigate the pore-scale mechanisms of FD induced by drilling fluids and their control with silica nanoparticles (NPs) using a microfluidic approach. The proper identification of the mechanisms of FD can lead to the proper selection of NP type and concentration as well as a suitable method to remediate FD. The micromodel was designed in a way to closely simulate the cross-flow at the wellbore surface. A...

Abstract
Simulation of brittle regime machining of materials (such as ceramics) is often difficult because of the complex material removal mechanisms involved. In this study, the discrete element method is used to simulate the dynamic process for machining of slip-cast fused silica ceramics. Flat-joint contact model is exploited to model contacts between particles in synthetic discrete element method models. This contact model is suitable for modeling of brittle materials with high ratios (higher than 10) of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength. The discrete element method has the ability to simulate initiation, propagation, and coalescence of cracks leading to chip formation in the...

Abstract
A finite difference-based numerical model simulating the cone penetration process in unsaturated sands is presented. Mohr–Coulomb model (MCM) with simple modifications and Sun model (SM) were implemented to capture the unsaturated sand behaviour. It was shown that the cone tip resistance values resulting from the two models were fairly comparable. Predicted cone tip resistance values in dry, saturated and unsaturated sands using MCM were validated by the results of field and calibration chamber tests. Sensitivity analyses were performed, and the influence of parameters including relative density, mean effective stress and apparent cohesion due to suction on the tip resistance was...

Abstract
The sloshing phenomena in a partially filled tank can affect its stability. Modifications of tank instability due to the movement of the tank carrier, are key design points for the stability of a carrier. Even though the sloshing phenomenon has already been investigated using the BEM-FDM technique, the research in this paper covers this phenomenon in a porous media, which is new in 2-D coordinates. For this purpose, a Laplace equation has been used for potential flow, and kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions have been applied to the free surface. Also, a formulation has been developed for a free surface in porous media. BEM has been used for solving the governing equation and FDM...
