Evaluation of dike-type causeway impacts on the flow and salinity regimes in Urmia Lake, Iran

    , Article Journal of Great Lakes Research ; Volume 35, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 13-22 ; 03801330 (ISSN) Zeinoddini, M ; Tofighi, M. A ; Vafaee, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Urmia Lake, located in a closed basin in north-west Iran, is the largest lake (5000-6000 km2) in the Middle East. It is very saline with total dissolved salts reaching 200 g/l compared with a normal seawater salinity of about 35 g/l. The construction of a causeway, which was initiated in 1979 but then abandoned until the early 2000s, is near completion and will provide road access between the western and eastern provinces. The causeway has an opening 1.25 km long and divides Urmia Lake into a northern and southern basin and restricts water exchange. The flow and salinity regimes are affected by the presence of this new causeway, and there are concerns over the well being of the Artemia...

Investigations of supersonic flow around a long axisymmetric body

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 6 B , 2009 , Pages 534-544 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Heidari, M. R ; Farahani, M ; Soltani, M. R ; Taeibi Rahni, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work, a supersonic turbulent flow over a long axisymmetric body was investigated, both experimentally and computationally. The experimental study consisted of a series of wind tunnel tests for the flow over an ogive-cylinder body at a Mach number of 1.6 and at a Reynolds number of 8 × 10 6, at angles of attack between -2 and 6 degrees. It included the surface static pressure and the boundary layer profile measurements. Further, the flow around the model was visualized using a Schlieren technique. All tests were conducted in the trisonic wind tunnel of the Qadr Research Center (QRC). Also, the same flow at zero angle of attack was computationally simulated using a multi-block grid...

A discretized analytical solution for fully coupled non-linear simulation of heat and mass transfer in poroelastic unsaturated media

, Article International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics ; Volume 33, Issue 13 , 2009 , Pages 1589-1611 ; 03639061 (ISSN) Arfaei Malekzadeh, F ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Mathematical simulation of non-isothermal multiphase flow in deformable unsaturated porous media is a complicated issue because of the need to employ multiple partial differential equations, the need to take into account mass and energy transfer between phases and because of the non-linear nature of the governing partial differential equations. In this paper, an analytical solution for analyzing a fully coupled problem is presented for the one-dimensional case where the coefficients of the system of equations are assumed to be constant for the entire domain. A major issue is the non-linearity of the governing equations, which is not considered in the analytical solution. In order to...

Modelling of power-law fluid flow through porous media using smoothed particle hydrodynamics

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 74, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 331-346 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Vakilha, M ; Manzari, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The flow of non-Newtonian fluids through two-dimensional porous media is analyzed at the pore scale using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A fully explicit projection method is used to simulate incompressible flow. This study focuses on a shear-thinning power-law model (n < 1), though the method is sufficiently general to include other stress-shear rate relationships. The capabilities of the proposed method are demonstrated by analyzing a Poiseuille problem at low Reynolds numbers. Two test cases are also solved to evaluate validity of Darcy's law for power-law fluids and to investigate the effect of anisotropy at the pore scale. Results show that the proposed algorithm can...

Application of numerical simulation to solid phase-microextraction for decreasing of extraction time of pyrene and phthalate esters on solid coatings

    , Article Journal of Chromatography A ; Volume 1673 , 2022 ; 00219673 (ISSN) Jafari, M ; Jamshidian, M ; Habibi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach with the k-ε closure model is employed for the first time to simulate direct Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) computationally. Simulations are performed by using COMSOL Multiphysics in order to examine methods to decrease the extraction time. Experiments are also conducted to support data obtained from the numerical framework. Di-n-Butyl Phthalate (DNBP) and etched steel wire are chosen as the analyte and the adsorbent, respectively. Stirring rate, fiber's location, stirrer magnet's size, and the method of sample rotation are examined to decrease the extraction time. In addition, the effects of adding a baffle to the vial and implementing a...

Acoustic resonance scattering from a multilayered cylindrical shell with imperfect bonding

    , Article Ultrasonics ; Volume 49, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 682-695 ; 0041624X (ISSN) Rajabi, M ; Hasheminejad, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The method of wave function expansion is adopted to study the three dimensional scattering of a time-harmonic plane progressive sound field obliquely incident upon a multi-layered hollow cylinder with interlaminar bonding imperfection. For the generality of solution, each layer is assumed to be cylindrically orthotropic. An approximate laminate model in the context of the modal state equations with variable coefficients along with the classical T-matrix solution technique is set up for each layer to solve for the unknown modal scattering and transmission coefficients. A linear spring model is used to describe the interlaminar adhesive bonding whose effects are incorporated into the global...

Cell toxicity of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

    , Article Journal of Colloid and Interface Science ; Volume 336, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 510-518 ; 00219797 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, M ; Simchi, A ; Milani, A. S ; Stroeve, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The performance of nanoparticles for biomedical applications is often assessed by their narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation and low toxicity effects. In this work, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different size, shape and saturation magnetization levels were synthesized via a co-precipitation technique using ferrous salts with a Fe3+/Fe2+ mole ratio equal to 2. A parametric study is conducted, based on a uniform design-of-experiments methodology and a critical polymer/iron mass ratio (r-ratio) for obtaining SPION with narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation, and optimum biocompatibility is identified. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been...

Stabilized Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method for incompressible viscous fluid flows

    , Article CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences ; Volume 29, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 75-94 ; 15261492 (ISSN) Haji Mohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, the truly Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is extended for computation of steady incompressible flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE), in vorticity-stream function formulation. The present method is a truly meshless method based on only a number of randomly located nodes. The formulation is based on two equations including stream function Poisson equation and vorticity advection-dispersion-reaction equation (ADRE). The meshless method is based on a local weighted residual method with the Heaviside step function and quartic spline as the test functions respectively over a local subdomain. Radial basis functions (RBF) interpolation is employed in shape...
