    Abstract
A comprehensive model for pervaporation in thin membrane channels was developed to study the effect of changing temperature and concentration on mass flux. This model consists of momentum, energy and species mass balances along and across the membrane in the flow channel. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was written in C++ programming language to solve the coupled non-linear transport equations in the channel by finite volume method. The Semi-Implicit Pressure Link Equation (SIMPLE) CFD algorithm is used to modify the dependent variables in each of the iterations. The effect of variation of temperature and concentration on transport and thermodynamic properties were considered by...

On the stability of supercavitating projectiles based on lagrangian analysis

    , Article 2005 ASME Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting, FEDSM2005, Houston, TX, 19 June 2005 through 23 June 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages 29-37 ; 0791837602 (ISBN); 9780791837603 (ISBN) Khakpour, Y ; Yazdani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this work, numerical simulation is used to study the stability enhancement of high speed supercavitating Shkval missile. Although supercavitation is known as one of the most effective methods for drag reduction, producing the cavity, either by ventilation or by cavitator at front of the body, may cause some instabilities on cavity surface and thus on the projectile's motion. Therefore removing these instabilities comes as an important point of discussion. First of all, we calculate the sources of instabilities and measure respective forces and then present some approaches that significantly reduce these instabilities. One of these methods that could produce more stable supercavities is...

Effects of inlet position and baffle configuration on the hydraulic performance of primary settling tanks

    , Article 2005 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2005, Orlando, FL, 5 November 2005 through 11 November 2005 ; Volume 261 FED , 2005 , Pages 613-618 ; 08888116 (ISSN); 0791842193 (ISBN); 9780791842195 (ISBN) Firoozabadi, B ; Tamayol, A ; Ahmadi, G ; ASME Fluids Engineering Division ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Circulation regions always exist in the settling tanks. These regions reduce the tank's performance and decrease effective volume of the tank. Recirculation zones would also result in short-circuiting and high flow mixing problems. Inlet position would also have effect on these, too. Using good baffle configuration may increase performance of settling tanks. One method for comparison of different tanks with each others is to use FTC. In this paper, by using FTC the effects of inlet position and baffle configuration on the hydraulic performance of primary settling tanks are studied. The best position of baffle is also determined. , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 9, Issue 7 , 2005 , Pages 592-604 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Ghorbanian, K ; Ashjaee, M ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
An experimental investigation is performed to explore the characteristics of sprays produced by a liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector in a non-combusting environment. Phase Doppler anemometry is used for the measurement of velocity and Sauter Mean Diameter of droplets across and along the injection axis for various inner- and outer mass flow rates. Results of the combined spray are compared with those of inner- and/or outer spray alone. The results indicate that the inner injector has a larger influence on the flow field of the combined spray compared to the outer one. Further, the maximum velocity of the combined spray is close to the center of the spray thickness and the velocity...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the frost formation and growth at the walls of a duct with uniform wall temperature variation. The simulation is performed for laminar flow regime considering suitable semi-empirical models incorporated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The frost growth is considered to be normal to the duct surface. Since the duct aspect ratio is high, we perform our simulations in two-dimensional zones. To simulate the frost layer properly, we solve both the energy and mass balance equations implementing some semi-empirical correlations on the frost side. At this stage, we suitably predict the required heat flux value at the solid boundary and the heat transfer...

    , Article International Journal of Energy Research ; Volume 41, Issue 12 , 2017 , Pages 1730-1739 ; 0363907X (ISSN) Asadzade, M ; Shamloo, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Finding the optimal flow pattern in bipolar plates of a proton exchange membrane is a crucial step for enhancing the performance of the device. Abstract
Determination of high-speed crafts' hydrodynamic coefficients will help to analyze the dynamics of these kinds of vessels and the factors affecting their dynamic stabilities. Also, it can be useful and effective in controlling the vessel instabilities. The main purpose of this study is to determine the coefficients of longitudinal motions of a planing catamaran with and without a hydrofoil using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method to evaluate the foil effects on them. Determination of hydrodynamic coefficients by experimental approach is costly and requires meticulous laboratory equipment; therefore, utilizing the numerical methods and developing a virtual laboratory seem highly...

    Abstract
To investigate the gas–solid flow pattern of a combustor-style fluid catalytic cracking regenerator, a laboratory-scale regenerator was designed. In scaling down from an actual regenerator, large-diameter hydrodynamic effects were taken into consideration. These considerations are the novelties of the present study. Applying the Eulerian–Eulerian approach, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the regenerator was developed. Using this model, various aspects of the hydrodynamic behavior that are potentially effective in catalyst regeneration were investigated. The CFD simulation results show that at various sections the gas–solid flow patterns exhibit different...

    Abstract
The powering requirement of a land yacht is one of the most important aspects of its design. In this respect the wind tunnel testing is an effective design tool. In fact, changing the parameters of the vehicle and testing the changes in the wind tunnel will give us a better understanding of the most efficient vehicle, and yet it is time consuming, expensive, and has inherent scaling errors. Another set of design tools are Computational Fluid Dynamics and parametric prediction. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes are not yet wholly proven in its accuracy. Parametric prediction is the starting point for most engineering studies. It will be used to calculate the land yacht's performance...

    Abstract
The 3D simulation of the hydrodynamic behavior of a rotating disc contactor (RDC) by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was investigated for the n-butanol-succinic acid-water (BSW) system. For the two-phase liquid-liquid flow, the velocity distribution of the continuous phase and drop size distributions were determined using the k-ω turbulence model in conjunction with the Eulerian-Eulerian approach and MUSIG model. In this system in which the holdup of the dispersed phase is low, the continuous phase velocity was computed by simultaneously solving the Navier-Stokes equations beside the different models of turbulence. The motions of the dispersed phase was calculated while...

In other words to design an AUV, one must clarify its maneuverability and controllability based on a mathematical model. The mathematical model contains various hydrodynamic forces and moments expressed collectively in terms of hydrodynamic coefficients. Therefore, the correct values of the coefficients must be known to precisely design the controller of AUVs. SUT-2 is an AUV, being developed by Marine Engineering Laboratory of Sharif University of...

Develop the Multigrid Method to Solve the Hydrodynamics Problems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology PourMostafa, Mahdi (Author) ; Noori, Ali (Supervisor) ; Seif, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, many advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods have been developed for accurate and efficient simulation of fluid flow. The application of these methods shows that for sufficient accuracy, the mesh resolution has to be reasonably high. Unfortunately, conventioanal single-grid Navier-Stokes solvers suffer from poor convergence characteristics. For this problem we used Multigrid method to speed up the convergence rate. In this section a code was developed (based on the conventional CFD algorithm) which can solve Navier-Stokes equations on structured grids. It also simulates the free surface by VOF method. Agglomeration multigrid method is used in present study for...
