    Abstract
The role of gas turbine power plants in electrical energy production has been considerably increased in the last two to three decades. Various methods have been proposed to improve the performance of gas turbine cycles. In this research, two methods, a reheat cycle and a cycle with a reheat and a recuperator, were investigated and compared with a simple cycle. The main objective of this paper is to study the performance of an simple cycle and reheat cycle under actual conditions. In this regard, all processes are treated as actual, and in particular a relatively simple and reliable approach is used to predict the amount of cooling air. The results obtained on the basis of a model developed...

Cooling of gas turbines inlet air through aquifer thermal energy storage

    , Article 2006 ASME Power Conference, Atlanta, GA, 2 May 2006 through 4 May 2006 ; Volume 2006 , 2006 ; 0791837769 (ISBN); 9780791837764 (ISBN) Bahadori, M. N ; Behafarid, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The power output of gas turbines reduces greatly with the increase of inlet air temperature. Aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) is employed for cooling of the inlet air of a gas turbine. Water from a confined aquifer is cooled in winter, and is injected back into the aquifer. The stored chilled water is withdrawn in summer to cool the gas turbine inlet air. The heated water is then injected back into the aquifer. A 20 MW Hitachi gas turbine, along with a two-well aquifer were considered for analysis. It was shown that the minimum power output of the gas turbine on the warmest day of the year could be raised from 16.30 to 20.05 MW, and the mean annual power output could be increased from...

    Abstract
Application of Cogeneration systems based gas turbine for heat and power production is increasing. Because of finite natural energy resources and increasing energy demand the cost effective design of energy systems is essential. CGAM problem as a cogeneration system is considered here for analyzing. Two new approaches are considered, first in thermodynamic model of gas turbine and cogeneration system considering blade cooling of gas turbine and second using genetic algorithm for optimization. The problem has been optimized from thermodynamic and Thermoeconomic view point. Results show that Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT) in thermodynamic optimum condition is higher than thermoeconomic one,...

    Abstract
This study presents the results of failure analysis of a 28 MW gas turbine at the Rei electrical power plant. The gas turbine failed during the shutdown period and near its second natural frequency at 4200 rpm. Initial inspections revealed that the compressor disk of stage 15 was fractured, and all of the stationary and rotary blades of stages 14-18 of the compressor had been detached or broken from the dovetail region of the disks. The fracture roots were investigated by performing finite element modeling and fractography analysis. It was shown that a crack was initiated from the disk edge on its interface with the rotor shaft and was propagated under cyclic loading. As a result of the...

    Abstract
During the shut down period, a 32. MW gas turbine experienced a severe failure accompanied by a loud noise near its second natural frequency at 4200. rpm. After opening the turbine casing, it was revealed that the disks of stages 16 and 17 of the compressor had been fractured and all of the stationary and rotary blades of stages 14-18 of the compressor had been detached from the dovetail region of the disks. The degree of damage was such that repairing the compressor was not economical, and thus, the compressor was no longer able to be used. Diagnostic work was carried out using different finite element models and fractography analysis. Analysis showed that multiple cracks had been initiated...

    Abstract
In this paper a scheduling optimization framework is developed to enhance power plants operational decision making process. The proposed framework optimizes plant schedule including operating conditions and maintenance intervals simultaneously and on an hourly basis. In a long term operation plant performance deteriorates due to components aging. This study employs equivalent operating hour (EOH) approach to describe components aging impact on the plant performance deterioration and consequently plant long term profit. Modeling of components aging increases system simulation accuracy in long term operation and the optimum decision variables would be more reliable and realistic. Validity and...

    , Article Materials and Manufacturing Processes ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 559-563 ; 10426914 (ISSN) Shahriari, D ; Sadeghi, M. H ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In precipitation hardenable materials, it is desirable to determine the precipitate dissolution temperature for homogenizing the microstructure by controlling the size and distribution of the precipitates. In this research, differential thermal analysis, dilatometry technique, heat treatments followed by microstructure evaluation were used to determine the -γ' dissolution temperature of Nimonic 115. It is assumed that the variation of enthalpy is governed by the changes in y volume fraction and γ concentration with time and temperature, and any contribution of the coarsening of γ' is neglected. The values obtained for the solvus temperature of γ precipitates by the three methods are all in...

    Abstract
Heavy-duty gas turbines are usually devised in power plants to generate electrical energy. Sudden failure in any of its parts or subdivisions will result in a decrement of the efficiency of the system or emergency shutdown of the system. The highest risk of failure in these turbines is subjected to the hot gas path (HGP) of the turbine. Due to the existence of uncertainty in diagnosing process or damage growth, in this research, a modified risk-based probabilistic failure analysis model using Bayesian networks (BN) was developed. First, a failure model was developed using the Fault Tree Analysis, and then it is transformed into a BN model. This model is capable of predicting and diagnosing...

    Abstract
In this paper, a transient model is developed to simulate the start-up operation of an industrial twin-shaft gas turbine based on real geometry and control logic. The control logic of the studied gas turbine was simplified and coupled with the developed engine performance model. Also, the gas turbine actuators including variable inlet guide vanes, compressor bleed valves, and fuel valves were simulated so that their concurrent effects on the gas turbine transient behavior can be captured precisely. Moreover, the air-cooled...

Failure analysis of gas turbine burner tips

    Abstract
In this study, the causes of failure in gas turbine burner tips were investigated. For this purpose, two burner tips used in a petrochemical company with different failure evidence as well as service times were inspected. These parts showed signs of deterioration such as multiple cracks, corrosion, and wear following 4000 h and 8000 h operations. The examinations included chemical composition analysis using optical emission spectroscopy (OES), stereo-, optical-, and scanning electron microscopy studies, and macro/micro-hardness measurements. These investigations revealed high thermal stresses to be the main failure cause of the burner tips. Moreover, due to flame inclination, a local...

    Abstract
Nowadays, the incorporation of wind power in electrical grids and electricity markets is grown. Due to the fluctuation of wind speed, one of the main challenges of wind power would be selling power directly to the wholesale markets. A method for solving this challenge is coordination of wind power with energy storages, cascaded hydro, or gas turbine units in bidding strategy and operation. By coordinating with gas turbine units, wind power can be incorporated in real-time markets with fewer capital costs. In this paper, a stochastic bi-level optimization is proposed for coordinated wind power and gas turbine units in the real-time market. The uncertainties of wind power, demands, rivals'...
