    , Article Physics Letters, Section A: General, Atomic and Solid State Physics ; Volume 372, Issue 8 , 2008 , Pages 1283-1287 ; 03759601 (ISSN) Moshaii, A ; Rezaei Nasirabad, R ; Imani, Kh ; Silatani, M ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2008
    Abstract
Effect of thermal conduction on radiation from a single cavitating bubble has been studied in a hydrochemical framework including variation of heat conductivity of noble gases up to 2500 K. Results of numerical simulation show that thermal conductivity plays an important role in determining ultimate cavitation temperature. Higher thermal conductivity of lighter noble gases causes to more thermal dissipation during the bubble collapse, leading to a lower peak temperature. Moreover, at the same driving conditions, radius of light emitting region is greater for heavier noble bubbles. Therefore, sonoluminescence radiation is more intensive from heavier noble gases. Phase diagrams of...

    Abstract
Well-known polars in classical shock wave theory, that is, flow deflection angle-shock angle (θ-β), hodograph (u*,v*), and pressure deflection (θ-P*) diagrams, are investigated for the rarefied gas flows using a recently proposed shock wave detection technique by Akhlaghi and coworkers. The agreement between the obtained polars with the analytical relations in classical shock wave theory has been shown in the continuum limit for the cases of supersonic flow over the wedge and cylinder geometries. Investigations are performed using the RGS2D direct simulation Monte Carlo solver for supersonic gas flows over a circular cylinder at continuum limit and Kn = 10-4, 10-3, 0.01, 0.03, 0.07, and...

Application of the Maxwell-Stefan theory in modeling gas diffusion experiments into isolated oil droplets by water

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , 2022 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Mirazimi, S ; Rostami, B ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Khosravi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
American Institute of Physics Inc  2022
    Abstract
We have used the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion theory to model the mass transfer between tertiary-injected gas and residual oil blocked by water, in order to predict the time required for the rupture of the water barrier due to oil swelling. We have also designed and conducted a set of visualization micromodel experiments on various pure and multicomponent oil-gas systems to measure the water rupture time in tertiary gas injection processes. The experimental results show that the initial pressure and dimensions of the system, the oil and gas composition, and the gas solubility in water control the oil swelling process. The experimentally measured rupture times are then employed to evaluate the...

Surface Modification of Polyethersulfone Membrane by Plasma Treatment for Gas Separation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dehghani Kiadehi, Atena (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the effects of treatment time and power of Low-frequency (LF) O2 plasma has been investigated for the surface treatment of polyethersulfone (PES) gas separation membranes. PES membranes prepared using dry/wet phase inversion using ternary mixtures containing 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent, water as non-solvent. The optimum polymer concentration was 32 wt.% , 61 wt.% and 7 wt.% for PES,1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and water respectively. Pure CO2 and CH4 gas permeation measurements were performed before and after plasma treatment. After treatment gas permeances of around 0.81 GPU for CO2, and 0.073 GPU for CH4 with selectivities of around 11.23 for CO2/CH4 were obtained....

Emission Mitigation Strategies for Combustion Sources

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naseri, Kasra (Author) ; Arhami, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Abrishamchi, Ahmad (Co-Supervisor) ; Azarmi, Farhad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Scientific studies, conducted over the world, show that an immense portion of pollutants and greenhouse gases emission to the atmosphere are the direct result of the incineration of fossil fuels in industrial units. These industrial units include chemical industries, power plants, metal industry, etc. Therefore, there is a tremendous necessity to reduce the pollutants emission from these industries immediately and effectively. Meanwhile, in order to mitigate the emission to the atmosphere, there should be a meticulous estimation of pollutants emission from various sources. Hence, in a project called "standardization of emission of pollutants from diverse industrial units in Iran", the...

Models for Technology Assessment and Management of Gas Flare and Developing Strategies for Reducing Flared Gas

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moghadam, Morteza (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The need for planning for the management and recovery of flare gases is an important issue in the energy sector of the country. On a day, about 46 million cubic meters of gas in Iran is burning in the torch, which in addition to the destruction of non-renewable energies, contributes to environmental pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases. Gas burning is one of the few pollutant activities that is due to short-term economic revenues, system design weaknesses, and lack of management in the operation process, with no service provided or value added. Iran is ranked third in the world according to satellite data among the countries that are burning flares. Accordingly, by burning 17/7...

Tunneling properties of nonplanar molecules in a gas medium

    , Article Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics ; Volume 84, Issue 6 , 2011 ; 10502947 (ISSN) Bahrami, M ; Bassi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We propose a simple, general, and accurate formula for analyzing the tunneling between classical configurations of a nonplanar molecule in a gas medium, as a function of the thermodynamic parameters of the gas. We apply it to two interesting cases: (i) the shift to zero frequency of the inversion line of ammonia, upon an increase in the pressure of the gas; and (ii) the destruction of the coherent tunneling of D 2S 2 molecules in a He gas. In both cases, we compare our analysis with previous theoretical and experimental results

, Article International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat and Fluid Flow ; Volume 17, Issue 7 , 2007 , Pages 736-753 ; 09615539 (ISSN) Naderan, H ; Taghizadeh Manzari, M ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of a specific class of high-resolution central schemes in conjunction with the black oil models for hydrocarbon reservoir simulation. Design/methodology/approach - A generalized black oil model is adopted, in which the solubility of gas in both oil and water and evaporation of oil are considered, leading to a system of equations prone to degeneracy. A computer code is generated and three test cases are solved to evaluate the performance of various schemes in terms of accuracy and discontinuity handling. Findings - It is shown that, although some of the central schemes are highly sensitive to the choice of...

    , Article 45th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting 2007, Reno, NV, 8 January 2007 through 11 January 2007 ; Volume 16 , 2007 , Pages 11313-11321 ; 1563478900 (ISBN); 9781563478901 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Vakilipour, S ; Rikhtegar, F ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The rapid progress in fabricating and utilizing micro-electromechanical systems during the last decade has not been matched by the corresponding advances in our understanding from the unconventional physics involved in manufacturing and operation of micro devices. To avoid the complexity encountered in modeling of nonlinear Boltzmann equations, the Navier-Stokes equations can be solved considering the slip flow regime concepts. The modeling can be achieved via employing suitable slip velocity boundary conditions at the solid walls. The modified first-order slip models can, in some cases, extend the range of applicability of the Navier-Stokes solvers to around and beyond Kn=0.1, where the...

Radiative models for the furnace side of a bottom-fired reformer

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 25, Issue 14-15 , 2005 , Pages 2398-2411 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Farhadi, F ; Bahrami Babaheidari, M ; Motamed Hashemi, M. M. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Two different groups of radiative models are used to simulate a Midrex reformer. The modeling includes the furnace-side as well as the reactor-side equations. The simultaneous solution of governing equations provides the flue gas and tube wall temperature profiles. These are compared with literature and plant data. It was observed that the Flux model, applied in this work on the furnace of a bottom-fired reformer, shows a good agreement with observed plant data. The well-stirred model is still satisfactory but the long-furnace model is far away to merit an attention. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Effects of confining walls on laminar natural convection from a horizontal cylinder

    , Article Proceedings of the Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference ; Volume 2 , 2000 , Pages 1261-1267 ; 0146955X (ISSN) Sadeghipour, M. S ; Razi, Y. P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2000
    Abstract
The laminar natural convection from an isothermal horizontal cylinder confined between vertical walls is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The experimental and numerical data are well correlated, independently, to equations which give the average Nusselt number in terms of the wall spacing to cylinder diameter ratio, t/D, and the Rayleigh number, Ra, for two different values of the wall height to cylinder diameter ratios, H/D=7 and 15.2. For the low Rayleigh numbers considered (Ra<1000), there are certain conditions for the confining walls under which heat transfer from the cylinder is maximum. Results are compared with the reported numerical and/or experimental results...

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 52, Issue 25-26 , 2009 , Pages 5751-5758 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Ziaei Rad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2009
    Abstract
The aim of this work is to analyze the gas flow in high pressure buried pipelines subjected to wall friction and heat transfer. The governing equations for one-dimensional compressible pipe flow are derived and solved numerically. The effects of friction, heat transfer from the wall and inlet temperature on various parameters such as pressure, temperature, Mach number and mass flow rate of the gas are investigated. The numerical scheme and numerical solution was confirmed by some previous numerical studies and available experimental data. The results show that the rate of heat transfer has not a considerable effect on inflow Mach number, but it can reduce the choking length in larger f DL/D...

    Abstract
This study is on combustion modeling of gaseous hydrogen and cryogenic liquid oxygen at the subcritical condition for the well-known Mascotte laboratory combustor. The proposed strategy relies on the hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian framework in which the continuous phase is evaluated by Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the quick discretization method. The dispersed phase of the combustion field is evaluated by the Discrete Phase Method (DPM). The Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) has been performed for combustion-turbulence interaction modeling. Effects of the turbulence model, chemical kinetic mechanism, equation of state, and inlet momentum jet flux are investigated in terms of...

    Abstract
This paper deals with simulation of transport phenomena in micro and nano pores. The number of cavities and the cavity radius were estimated by using Henry's law for adsorption of Argon onto ZSM-5 and NaX zeolites. This work showed both of zeolites have pores with average size less than 1 nm. Then with using micro- nano channel assumption instead of micro-nano pores, gas flow and heat transfer were investigated. Subsonic nonideal gas flow and heat transfer for different Knudsen number are investigated numerically using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method modified with a consistent Boltzamnn algorithm. The collision rate is also modified based on the Enskog theory for dense gas. It is...
