    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 82 , September , 2012 , Pages 214-216 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Garavand, N. T ; Mahdavi, S. M ; Irajizad, A ; Ahadi, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
In this letter a simple procedure to synthesize sodium tungsten oxide nano-thick plates from WO 3 films has been reported. WO 3 films were grown by pulsed-laser deposition method and then heat treated at temperatures up to 560 °C and times up to 120 min. Slide glass was used as both substrate and sodium source simultaneously. XRD analysis revealed presence of an amorphous structure for as-deposited WO 3 films. On the other hand, XRD showed formation of a monoclinic WO 3 structure with annealing in lower temperatures and a triclinic Na 0.5WO 3.25 structure with annealing at higher temperatures. Intensity of the triclinic phase peaks enhanced drastically by rising annealing temperature and...

    Abstract
Thanks to a wide range of pore sizes by nano/macro composites of SiOC/Al2O3, such composites can serve as different layers of the structure of Packed Bed Reactor Membranes (PBRM). In the present study, the Polymer-Derived Ceramics method (PDC) has been used to synthesize nano/macro structures. Firstly, the effect of toluene as an extra carbon source on structure and microstructure of SiOC glass-ceramics was evaluated, such that, 4% (Vol) toluene was recognized as the proper amount to facilitate the synthesis of β-SiC at 1300 °C proved by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and HR-TEM. Moreover, the presence of micro/meso-porosities was assessed by BET and TEM, indicating the capability of SiOC to serve...

Synthesis of SBR/PMMA core/shell latices: the role of initiator and surfactant on particle morphology and instability performance

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 105, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 1412-1419 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Moghbeli, M. R ; Mohammadi, N ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Poly(butadiene-stat-styrene)/poly(methylmetacrylate), SBR/PMMA, structural latices were synthesized by using equal moles of different kinds of surfactants: anionic, nonionic, and anionic/nonionic mixture in a two-stage emulsion polymerization. The results indicate that the application of anionic surfactants for the first stage, accompanying sodium persulfate initiator, KPS, for both stages led to core/shell and raspberry morphologies depended upon the hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) of the surfactant. On the other hand, a core/shell structure was observed for structural latices which were synthesized via application of nonionic or anionic/non-ionic mixed surfactants along with...

Glass-ceramic composites in the SiO2-CaO-MgO-(Na2O) system, reinforced with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% aluminum titanate were synthesized by pressureless sintering. Optimum sintering temperatures with maximum relative density were determined for each composition. The composites were fired above the crystallization peak temperature of glass-ceramic. Mechanical properties of glass-ceramic and sintered composites, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and Vickers microhardness, were investigated. The sintered composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the composite containing 10...

Synthesis and characterization of co-doped TiO2 thin films on glass-ceramic

    , Article Materials Science in Semiconductor Processing ; Vol. 26, Issue 1 , October , 2014 , pp. 41-48 ; ISSN: 13698001 Ahmadi, N ; Nemati, A ; Solati-Hashjin, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, an attempt was made to improve TiO2 photo-catalyst properties, thus pure, N-Ce co-doped TiO2 thin films were prepared on glass-ceramic substrate using a sol-gel dip-coating technique. The samples were calcinated in air at 475 °C, 550°C, and 650°C for 2 h. The result of simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the presence of Ce in TiO2 could inhibit the phase transformation from anatase to rutile and enhance the thermal stability, and anatase was the dominant phase in N-Ce co-doped TiO2 samples. Also based on the results, the doping results in decreasing the size of TiO 2 crystallite. The results of ultra violet-visible light diffuse...

    Abstract
Herein, the fracture toughness of ternary epoxy systems containing nanosilica and hollow glass microspheres (HGMS) is investigated. The experimental measurements reveal synergistic fracture toughness in some hybrid compositions: The incorporation of 10 phr of HGMS and nanosilica alone modify the fracture toughness of epoxy by 39% and 91%, respectively. However, use of 10 phr hybrid modifier can enhance the fracture toughness of the resin up to 120%. Observations reveal different toughening mechanisms for the blends i.e., plastic deformation for silica nanoparticles and crack bifurcation for HGMS. Both of these toughening mechanisms additively contribute to the synergism in ternary epoxies

    Abstract
The effect of etching time on the statistical properties of hydrophilic surfaces of SiO2/TiO2/glass nano bilayers has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a stochastic approach based on a level crossing analysis. We have created rough surfaces of the hydrophilic SiO 2/TiO2 nano bilayer system by using 26% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Measuring the average apparent contact angle allowed us to assess the degree of hydrophilicity, and the optimum condition was determined to be 10 min etching time. A level crossing analysis based on AFM images provided deeper insight into the microscopic details of the surface topography. With different etching times, it has been shown...

    Abstract
Toughening of epoxy with different types of modifiers produces a bimodal blend that might show better fracture resistance in comparison with single-modified ones. In this research, bimodal epoxy formulations including mixtures of glass microsphere and silica nanoparticles are explored for possible synergistic toughening. The influence of composition on the glass transition temperature (Tg), tensile characteristics, and fracture toughness (KIC) is investigated. Interestingly, a synergism in fracture toughness is observed when mixtures of modifiers were incorporated. For the fixed overall modifier content, KIC is higher when the volume fraction of glass microsphere is lesser than the volume...

Study of oil sorption by expanded perlite at 298.15 K

    , Article Separation and Purification Technology ; Volume 52, Issue 2 , 2006 , Pages 295-300 ; 13835866 (ISSN) Bastani, D ; Safekordi, A. A ; Alihosseini, A ; Taghikhani, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Sorption capacity as well as sorption kinetics of oil onto four different expanded perlites with different physical and surface properties were studied. In order to meticulously measure the amount of oil to be sorbed onto the adsorbents used in this study both static and dynamic methods were employed. It would be worth noting that the adsorbent, i.e., perlite can spread on the oil and float on the surface thanks to its low density. The variation of the amount of oil sorbed onto the adsorbents with time was recorded and the weight of adsorbent was monitored at each specified time. The experimental results showed that grain sizes with high surface area can sorb oil to be spread on water...

Studies on the friction and wear characteristics of rubber-based friction materials containing carbon and cellulose fibers

    , Article Journal of Materials Science ; Volume 46, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1890-1901 ; 00222461 (ISSN) Shojaei, A ; Arjmand, M ; Saffar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present study was an attempt to examine the effects of carbon and cellulose fibers on the tribological characteristics of rubber-based friction materials (RBFMs). A fiber free RBFM as a reference material and a series of fiber included RBFMs at different volume fractions were prepared by two-roll mill. The friction tests were per-formed at different sliding velocities and various drum temperatures. The mechanical properties and surface microstructure of friction specimens were also examined. It was revealed that the carbon fiber infiuences slightly the coefficient of friction (COF) of RBFM but it improves the wear resistance and the fade behavior considerably. It reduces the drum...

Structural modification through pressurized sub-Tg annealing of metallic glasses

    , Article Journal of Applied Physics ; Volume 122, Issue 21 , 2017 ; 00218979 (ISSN) Foroughi, A ; Ashuri, H ; Tavakoli, R ; Stoica, M ; Ažopu, D ; Eckert, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The atomic structure of metallic glasses (MGs) plays an important role in their physical and mechanical properties. Numerous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to reveal the structure of MGs at the atomic scale. However, the cooling rates utilized in most of the MD simulations (usually on the order of 109-1012 K/s) are too high to allow the structure to relax into the actual structures. In this study, we performed long-term pressurized sub-Tg annealing for up to 1 μs using MD simulation to systematically study the structure evolution of Cu50Zr50 MG. We find that from relaxation to rejuvenation, structural excitation of MGs and transition during sub-Tg annealing depend on...

    Abstract
The existence of the important similarities between gelation and glass transition makes it hard to distinguish between the two types of nonergodic states experimentally. Here, we report on a stochastic analysis of the scattered light intensity through a colloidal particles suspension during the gel and glass formation. In this analysis, we exploit the methods developed for complex hierarchical systems, such as turbulence. Using the multiplicative log-normal cascade models, we provide a criterion to distinguish gels from glasses

    Abstract
In this study, bioglasses in SiO2-CaO-MgO system were synthesized through sol-gel method and the effect of silica and magnesia contents on in-vitro bioactivity of the bioglasses were investigated. XRD patterns showed an amorphous structure after heat treatment at 600°C for 2 h for all glasses and also indicated that after immersion in SBF, apatite particles precipitated on glass surfaces and the rate of apatite formation decreased with increasing Mg/Ca ratio. On the other hand, the apatite formation rate was enhanced with increasing the silica content. Furthermore, magnesia contents increased the compressive strength of the samples. According to SEM, higher Mg/Ca ratio led to increase in...
