    Abstract
In order to study the interaction of sloshing and structural vibrations of baffled tanks, a reduced order model based on modal analysis of structure model and boundary element method for fluids motion is developed. For this purpose, the governing equations of elastic structure and incompressible flow are used to derive simple models to simulate both fields. Using the modal analysis technique, the structural motions are applied to the fluid model and on the other hand by using boundary element method, the fluid loads are applied to the structural model. Based on this formulation, a code is developed which is applicable to an arbitrary elastic tank with arbitrary arrangement of baffles. The...

    Abstract
We have introduced a new low-Reynolds-number microrobot with high 3D maneuverability. Our novel proposed microrobot has a higher rank of the controllability matrix with respect to the previous microswimmers which makes it capable of performing complex motions in space. In this study, governing equations of the microswimmer's motion have been derived and simulated. Subsequently, we have proposed a cascade optimal control technique to control the swimmer trajectory. In the proposed control scheme, the actuation is provided in a way that an exponential stability on the system trajectory error as well as minimum fluctuations of control signals are achieved. © The Author(s), 2021. Abstract
Utilization of heat storage units in solar energy systems can resolve the challenge of fluctuation and uncertainty of the solar energy. Phase change materials (PCMs) are used as the storage media for solar energy storage systems. In this research, a system including of a solar collector and a PCM-based cascaded energy storage unit was numerically investigated. Air was used as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and three paraffin-based materials (RT50, RT65, and RT80) were used as PCM for the energy storage unit. The investigated system mainly operates between 15 °C and 90 °C and considering different PCMs, the selected PCMs were appropriate. Paraffin-based PCMs also present acceptable thermal...

An investigation of contact angles in angular contact ball bearings accounting for high speed effects and preload

    , Article SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 780-790 ; 19463995 (ISSN) Movahhedy, M. R ; Zahedi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Angular contact ball bearings are the most commonly used types of bearings. Although simple in appearance, these bearings have a complicated and nonlinear behavior, and have significant effect on the dynamics of a rotating system. Accounting for high speed effects adds to the complexity of their behavior. The governing equations of the bearing amount to the solution of a set of nonlinear equations for each rolling element at each iteration, which represents a tedious and expensive solution. In this work, a simplified model for angular contact ball bearings under the action of arbitrary loading including high speed effects and preload is presented. The model considers five degrees of freedom...

    Abstract
Deformation modeling of an infinite plate of functionally graded materials (FGMs) loaded by normal force to the plate surface is studied. The material properties of FGM plate are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations are based on stress-strain relation and the equilibrium force equation. Keeping generality, FGM plate has been assumed as a multilayer with linear material property in each layer while arbitrary exponential material property through the thickness. A plate made of Aluminum and Alumina is considered as an example to illustrate the effects of the...

    Abstract
To account for certain essential features of material such as dispersive behaviour and optical branches in dispersion curves, a fundamental departure from classical elasticity to polar theories is required. Among the polar theories, micromorphic elasticity of appropriate grades and anisotropy is capable of capturing these physical phenomena completely. In the mathematical framework of micromorphic elasticity, in addition to the traditional elastic constants, some additional constants are introduced in the pertinent governing equations of motion. A precise evaluation of the numerical values of the aforementioned elastic constants in the realm of the experimentations poses serious...

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 188 , 15 March , 2018 , Pages 15-24 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Momeni, S. A ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
A size-dependent formulation for the Euler-Bernoulli nano- and micro-beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is presented. The formulation is developed on the basis of the second strain gradient theory (SSGT). This theory is a powerful non-classical continuum theory capable of capturing the small-scale effects in the mechanical behavior of small-scale structures. To drive the governing equations of motion along with the general form of boundary conditions, the Hamilton principle is utilized. Due to the inhomogeneity through the thickness of functionally graded beams, the two equations which govern the axial and flexural deformations are coupled. In two case studies with different...

    Abstract
The stress distribution on open-ended Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in a composite material is considered in this work and an analytical solution for the stress distribution has been obtained. The effects of CNT's thickness and CNT's length on the distribution of stress have been investigated. To find the governing relations, continuity equations of the axisymmetric problem in cylindrical coordinate (r,o,z) are used. Under some assumptions, the governing equations are solved and by using constitutive equations and applying the boundary conditions, an equation which relates the stress applied to the representative volume element with the stress distribution on the CNT, has been found. The...

    Abstract
The nonlinear dynamic and static deflection of a micro/nano gyroscope under DC voltages and base rotation are investigated. The gyroscope undertakes two coupled bending motions along the drive and sense directions and subjected to electrostatic actuations and intermolecular forces. The nonlinear governing equations of motion for the system with the effect of electrostatic force, intermolecular tractions and base rotation are derived using extended Hamilton principle. Under constant voltage, the gyroscope finds the preformed shape. First, the deflection of the micro/nano gyroscope under electrostatic forces is obtained by static and dynamic analyses. Furthermore, the static and dynamic...

    Abstract
In this paper, the governing equations and boundary conditions of a functionally graded Euler-Bernoulli beam are developed based on the non-local theory of elasticity. Afterward, the free vibration is investigated and the effects of the axial load, the non-local parameter and the power index on the natural frequency of a hinged-hinged beam is assessed. The results indicate that the non-local parameter has a decreasing effect on the frequency while the power index has an increasing effect. It is also noted that the effect of the axial load is increasing too

The displacement of the solid phase, the pressure of the wetting phase and the capillary pressure are taken as the primary unknowns of the three-phase formulation. A softening cohesive law is employed to describe the nonlinear...

Effects of midplane stretching, electrostatic actuation, fringing fields and intermolecular forces are considered. The boundary conditions of the beams are clamped-free and clamped-clamped. A finite element model is developed to discretize the governing equations and Newmark time discretization is then employed to solve the discretized equations. The results indicate that by increasing the Casimir and van der Waals effects, the effect of inertia on pull-in values considerably increases

    Abstract
Plates on elastic foundations have attracted the attention of many researchers. Some elementary models have been introduced to consider interactions between the plate and its foundation. Other improved models have been proposed to develop basic models. In this work, a model based on the Winkler-foundation theory is proposed, while the constant parameter of Winkler is assumed to be variable; such as non-uniform springs with the functionality of the domain position, along with the plate and beam span in order to consider the non-uniform behavior of the foundation. The governing equation on the system is solved by using the Galerkin method and effects such as the presence of rigid points in the...

    Abstract
This paper deals with the problem of static instability of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and Casimir force. At the First the governing equations of the statical behavior of Micro/Nano mirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and casimir force is obtained. The dependency of the critical tilting angle on the physical and geometrical parameters of the nano/micromirror and its supporting torsional beams is investigated. It is found that existence of casimir force can considerably reduce the stability limits of nano/micromirror. It is also found that rotation angle of the mirror due to capillary force highly depends on the casimir force applied to the...

    Abstract
Based on nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT), transient behavior of a porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplate due to various impulse loads has been studied. The porous nanoplate has evenly and unevenly distributed pores inside its material structure. Impulse point loads are considered to be rectangular, triangular and sinusoidal types. These impulse loads lead to transient vibration of the nanoplate which is not studied before. NSGT introduces a nonlocal coefficient together with a strain gradient coefficient to characterize small size influences due to non-uniform stress and strain fields. Galerkin's approach has been performed to solve the governing equations and also inverse Laplace...

    Abstract
In this research, the developing turbulent swirling flow in the entrance region of a pipe is investigated analytically by using the boundary layer integral method. The governing equations are integrated through the boundary layer and obtained differential equations are solved with forth-order Adams predictor-corrector method. The general tangential velocity is applied at the inlet region to consider both free and forced vortex velocity profiles. The comparison between present model and available experimental data demonstrates the capability of the model in predicting boundary layer parameters (e.g. boundary layer growth, shear rate and swirl intensity decay rate). Analytical results showed...
