Unsteady solute dispersion by electrokinetic flow in a polyelectrolyte layer-grafted rectangular microchannel with wall absorption

    , Article Journal of Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 887 , 2020 Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Moosavi, A ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Cambridge University Press  2020
    Abstract
The dispersion of a neutral solute band by electrokinetic flow in polyelectrolyte layer (PEL)-grafted rectangular/slit microchannels is theoretically studied. The flow is assumed to be both steady and fully developed and a first-order irreversible reaction is considered at the wall to account for probable surface adsorption of solutes. Considering low electric potentials, analytical solutions are obtained for electric potential, fluid velocity and solute concentration. Special solutions are also obtained for the case without wall adsorption. To track the dispersion properties of the solute band, the generalized dispersion model is adopted by considering the exchange, the convection and the...

    Abstract
In this work, the addition of a novel polyaniline (PANI)/silica (SiO2) nanostructure (PSn) in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers (CP) was evaluated to enhance the dye removal capacity of CP. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results confirmed the chemical grafting of SiO2 on PANI nanoparticles. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results showed a specific surface area of 61 m2 g−1 for the PSn filled CP nanofiber (CP-PSn). FE-SEM and EDS-elemental mapping results showed the uniform dispersibility of PSn in CP nanofibers. After the addition of PSn into CP, the adsorption capacity of...

Friction reduction in grafted carbon nanochannels by applying an electric field

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 213 , 2022 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Saleki, O ; Moosavi, A ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Water can be pumped in nanochannels by limiting it between the surfaces with different hydrophobicities and exerting a spinning electric field. The asymmetrical hydrophobicity combined with the spinning electric field and the fact that the water molecules have a dipole moment create a situation in which the angular momentum of water molecules is transformed into a linear momentum and the water is pumped into the nanochannel. The hydrophobicity of the surfaces can be manipulated by using nanostructures to reduce friction. In this study, two types of nanostructures have been used which are hierarchical nanostructures and polymer nanostructures made of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). The walls of...

Finally, failure modes of specimens and ultimate failure load were recorded. The maximum possible tendon surface strain (i.e., tendon compression [TC]) for tendon diameters of 6, 7, 8, and 9 mm...

Patient-specific fluid–structure interaction simulation of the LAD-ITA bypass graft for moderate and severe stenosis: A doubt on the fractional flow reserve-based decision

    , Article Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 42, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 143-157 ; 02085216 (ISSN) Tajeddini, F ; Firoozabadi, B ; Pakravan, H. A ; Ahmadi Tafti, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Fractional flow reserve (FFR)-based decision improves the outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for some patients, while its effectiveness in improving the results of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is unclear, in particular for moderate stenosis. It may be due to the fact that FFR cannot take into account the impacts of competitive flow (CF), intimal hyperplasia (IH), as well as compliance mismatch (CMM). As a result, two questions arise 1) whether FFR is a sufficient factor to decide to perform the CABG for patients with moderate to severe stenosis or not and 2) whether post-operative FFR shows the effectiveness of a graft. To shed light on this matter, two...

    Abstract
Abstract: In recent years, temporary skin grafts (TSG) based on natural biopolymers modified with carbon nanostructures have received considerable attention for wound healing. Developments are required to improve physico-mechanical properties of these materials to match to natural skins. Additionally, in-deep pre-clinical examinations are necessary to ensure biological performance and toxicity effect in vivo. In the present work, we show superior acute-wound healing effect of graphene oxide nanosheets embedded in ultrafine biopolymer fibers (60 nm) on adult male rats. Nano-fibrous chitosan-based skin grafts crosslinked by Genepin with physico-mechanical properties close to natural skins were...

Then, AgNPs were loaded onto the modified Fe3O4 to be used for water disinfection. The resulting nanoparticles were characterised by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction,...

Igniter jet dynamics in solid fuel ramjets

    , Article Acta Astronautica ; Volume 64, Issue 2-3 , 2009 , Pages 166-175 ; 00945765 (ISSN) Tahsini, A. M ; Farshchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The dynamics of a two dimensional plane jet injected at the base of a step, parallel to the wall, in backward facing step flow geometry is numerically studied. The objective of this work is to gain insight into the dynamics of the igniter flow field in solid fuel ramjet motors. Solid fuel ramjets operate by ingestion of air and subsequent combustion with a solid fuel grain such as polyethylene. The system of governing equations is solved with a finite volume approach using a structured grid in which the AUSM+ scheme is used to calculate the convective fluxes. The Spalart and Allmaras turbulence model is used in these simulations. Experimental data have been used to validate the flow solver...

A minimally invasive robotic surgery approach to perform totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass on beating hearts

    , Article Medical Hypotheses ; Volume 124 , 2019 , Pages 76-83 ; 03069877 (ISSN) Alamdar, A ; Hanife, S ; Farahmand, F ; Behzadipour, S ; Mirbagheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Churchill Livingstone  2019
    Abstract
The currently available robotic systems rely on rigid heart stabilizers to perform totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass (TECAB) surgery on beating hearts. Although such stabilizers facilitate the anastomosis procedure by immobilizing the heart and holding the surgery site steady, they can cause damage to the heart tissue and rupture of the capillary vessels, due to applying relatively large pressures on the epicardium. In this paper, we propose an advanced robotic approach to perform TECAB on a beating heart with minimal invasiveness. The idea comes from the fact that the main pulsations of the heart occur as excursions in normal direction, i.e., perpendicular to the heart surface. We...

Comprehensive simulation of the effects of process conditions on plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of silicon nitride

    , Article Semiconductor Science and Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 9 , 22 August , 2008 ; 02681242 (ISSN) Bavafa, M ; Ilati, H ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A numerical model for the deposition of silicon nitride using silane and ammonia mixture in a radio frequency plasma reactor has been developed. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process is simulated by combined analysis for the glow discharge, fluid flow and chemical reactions. The main goal is to investigate the effect of variations of the process parameters on the deposition rate, and uniformity of the resulting layer. The approach used is based on the theoretical partial differential equation models, without any empirical approximation of the critical data being used. Owing to the fact that the relevant equations are highly nonlinear, the discretization method is of great...

    Abstract
The present work deals with a novel approach for grafting a sol-gel based sorbent, using diazonium salts for preparation of an unbreakable capillary microextraction (CME) device in on-line combination with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The use of diazonium salts modifier allowed all types of metallic and non-metallic substrates to be used without any limitation. Substrates including copper, brass, stainless steel and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were chosen to be functionalized by chemical or electrochemical reduction of 4-amino phenyl acetic acid. Then, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine (3TMSPA) was selected as the precursor and the only reagent for preparation of the...

Nanocapsules based on carbon nanotubes-graft-polyglycerol hybrid materials

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 20, Issue 48 , 2009 ; 09574484 (ISSN) Adeli, M ; Mirab, N ; Zabihi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work the effect of a conjugated macromolecule on the conformation of CNT was studied. Typically polyglycerol (PG) was covalently grafted onto the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and MWCNT-graft-PG (MWCNT- g-PG) hybrid materials were obtained. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments showed an average diameter around 100nm for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials in water. The difference between this size and the expected size for MWCNT- g-PG hybrid materials (the length of pristine MWCNTs was several micrometers) was assigned to the effect of the grafted PG on the conformation of MWCNT in the solution state. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) evaluations showed a change...

    Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically modified withpara-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to immobilize copper(ii) ions on its surface and used as a nanocatalyst for the oxidative C(sp2)-H bond amination reaction. A practical method to prepare Cu2+supported onpara-aminobenzoic acid grafted on GO was reported. The prepared Cu2+@GO/PABA was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, AFM, TEM, UV-Vis, and ICP techniques. The results showed that the morphology, distribution, and loading of copper ions could be well-adjusted by grafting of PABA on GO. Moreover, just 2 mol% of Cu2+@GO-PABA could catalyze the C-H activation reaction of benzoxazole and benzothiazole with secondary amines in >94% yields. Also, the...

    Abstract
The treatment of water contaminated by bacteria is becoming a necessity. The nanomaterials possessing both intrinsic antibacterial properties and photocatalytic activity are excellent candidates for water disinfection. The powdered form of nanomaterials can be aggregated while embedding the nanomaterials into the NFs can overcome the limitation and enhance the photocatalytic activity and transition from UV-light to visiblelight. Here, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized, grafted to chitosan, and decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to produce Ag-decorated reduced GO-graft-Chitosan (AGC) NPs. The blends of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and AGC NPs were prepared in various concentrations of...
