Analysis of modal reflectivity of optical waveguide end-facets by the characteristic green's function technique

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Vol. 32, Issue. 6 , 2014 , Pages 1168-1176 ; ISSN: 07338724 Torabi, A ; Shishegar, A. A ; Faraji Dana, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel method for computation of guided mode reflectivity from optical waveguide end-facet is presented. The method is based on the characteristic Green's function (CGF) technique formulation combined with the complex images (CIs) method for dielectric planar waveguides. By separability assumption of the structure, a uniform and closed-form expression of spatial Green's function is obtained. Derived expression consists of discrete and continuous spectrum contributions which denote guided and radiation modes effects, respectively. Having a full-wave solution, efficient optimization procedure is then used to calculate the exact reflection coefficients of guided modes at the end-facets. To...

    Abstract
Closed-form enough-accurate Green's function for wave-propagation modeling in a rectangular 2-D room is presented using the characteristic Green's function technique. This Green's function is first developed in an integral form. Then, its spatial-domain closed form is obtained using three fast methods. In the first method, the integral is computed by the stationary phase method. In the second one, the integral is computed analytically by expanding the integrand into a complex exponential series. In the third method, the integrand is approximated by a series of rational functions and the integral is computed using Cauchy's residue theorem. The results of these three methods are studied and...

    Abstract
In this paper, for the first time, we present a computational study on the electrical behavior of the field-effect tunneling transistor based on vertical graphene-MoS2 heterostructure and vertical graphene nanoribbon-MoS2 heterostructure. Our simulation is based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism along with an atomistic tight-binding (TB) model. The TB parameters are obtained by fitting the bandstructure to first-principle results. By using this model, electrical characteristics of device, such as I ON/I OFF ratio, subthreshold swing, and intrinsic gate-delay time, are investigated. We show that the combination of tunneling and thermionic transport allows modulation of current by...

    Abstract
In this paper the electrical characteristics of a novel nanoscale double-gate MOSFET (DG-MOSFET) have been investigate by a full Quantum Mechanical simulation framework. This framework consists of Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) solved self-consistently with Poisson's Equation. Quantum transport equations are solved in two-dimension (2-D) by recursive NEGF method in active area of the device to obtain the charge density and Poisson's equation is solved in entire domain of simulation to get potential profile. Once self-consistently achieved all parameters of interest (e.g. potential profile, charge density, DIBL, etc) can be measured. In this novel DG-MOSFET structure, a front gate...

    Proper Closed-form Representation for Site-specific Radio-wave Propagation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sadrearhami, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Shishegar, Amir Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, a proper closed-form representation has been presented for the site specific indoor radio-wave propagation. Characteristic Green’s function (CGF) technique is used to obtain the integral representation of the Green’s function of a rectangular 2D room with dielectric slab walls. Based on numerical simulations, this method provide quite accurate results for wave propagation in the interior region (away from the walls) but the error increases for source or field points near the walls. The presented integral form of Green’s function has slow convergence and computed using Real images, complex images and rational function fitting methods. An error of less than 20 percent is...

Role of 3D-paired pentagon-heptagon defects in electronic and transport properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons

    , Article Applied Physics A: Materials Science and Processing ; Volume 116, Issue 1 , July , 2014 , Pages 295-301 ; ISSN: 09478396 Fotoohi, S ; Moravvej Farshi, M. K ; Faez, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Electronic and transport properties of 11 zigzag graphene nanoribbons (11-z-GNRs) with two types of 3D-paired pentagon-heptagon defects (3D-PPHDs) are studied using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method. The C ad-dimers that have been introduced to z-GNRs to form these 3D-PPHDs have induced local strains forcing the C-bonds in the ad-dimers to hybridize in sp3-like rather than sp2-like orbitals. Such transformations that cause extra electrons to accumulate around the 3D-PPHDs are responsible for the variations in the electronic and transport properties of the defected z-GNRs. Density of states (DOS) for 11-z-GNRs containing either type of 3D-PPHDs,...

    , Article Applied Physics A: Materials Science and Processing ; Volume 105, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 875-880 ; 09478396 (ISSN) Fathi, D ; Sarvari, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new method for modeling and analysis of deformed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using Green's function, is presented in this paper, for the first time. Using the proposed method, a new circuit model is obtained for the deformation region of a deformed single-walled CNT (SWCNT), which the values of its elements depend on the type of deformation and also the deformation parameters such as the coupling matrices and the energy variations of deformation region. The comparison between the obtained results from the analysis of proposed model and the literature gives a good match which approves the accuracy and correctness of the proposed model

    Abstract
Local density approximation (LDA) and Green function effective Coulomb (GW) calculations are performed to investigate the effect of electronic correlations on the electronic properties of both graphene and graphane. The size of band gap in graphane increases from 3.7 eV in LDA to 4.9 eV in GW approximation. By calculating maximally localized Wannier wave functions, we evaluate the necessary integrals to get the Hubbard U and the exchange J interaction from first principles for both graphene and graphane. Our ab-initio estimates indicate that in the case of graphene, in addition to the hopping amplitude t ∼ 2.8 eV giving rise to the Dirac nature of low lying excitations, the Hubbard U value...

    Abstract
The spatial Green's function of the open microstrip structure is usually represented by the time-consuming and computationally inefficient spectral integral. This paper introduces a new closed form Green's function for the open microstrip structure by applying the GGF method. Therefore, the numerical integration of the spectral integral can be avoided entirely, leading to a considerable decrease of calculating time. Owing to the remarkable resemblances between the CI and GGF methods, for improvement of approximation especially in large distances, some useful techniques such as extraction of the surface wave poles can be carried out. Even though only an open microstrip structure with one...

    Abstract
An efficient hybrid method is presented for the analysis of the interference phenomenon in high frequency communication circuits. The method is based on the transmission line matrix (TLM) method, augmented with a time domain integral formulation using the free space Green's function to account for the radiation of equivalent sources on boundary surfaces. The method is highly effective in reducing the dispersion effects in the TLM method and drastically reduces its computational intensity. © 2003 IEEE

An efficient closed-form derivation of spatial green's function for finite dielectric structures using characteristic green's function-rational function fitting method

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation ; Vol. 62, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 1282-1292 ; ISSN: 0018926X Torabi, A ; Shishegar, A. A ; Faraji-Dana, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A uniform and closed-form spatial Green's function for finite dielectric structures is derived by using a combination of the characteristic Green's function (CGF) and rational function fitting method (RFFM). Employing the concept of quasi leaky waves, CGF-RFFM represents both of the discrete and continuous spectrum contributions efficiently by using the modified VECTFIT algorithm. The method is examined for 2-D truncated dielectric slab while it can be implemented for 3-D structure straightforwardly. An error of less than 0.2% is achieved compared with the direct numerical integration of the spectral integral. The derived Green's function is exact for separable structures while it is...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of Stone-Wales (SW) defect on transport properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) are studied using tight binding calculations combined with nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF). We evaluate transmission and density of states (DOS) in two cases, pristine and defective AGNR, and we compare the results. Our results indicate that in the latter case, a larger bandgap is made due to symmetry breaking in GNR layer

    Abstract
The integral equation technique, in combination with the method of moments, is widely used for treating the electromagnetic scattering from periodic rough surfaces. This method, however, requires the computation of a kernel (a periodic Green's function) that consists of a slowly converging infinite series of conventional Green's functions. To accelerate the convergence of this series, different methods have been proposed in literature. In this paper, we use a complex image (CI) technique to find a closed-form expression for the periodic Green's function, which is then used to analyze the electromagnetic scattering from arbitrary periodic rough surfaces. The resulting CI Green's function...

    Abstract
A novel method for computation of modal reflectivity at optical waveguide end-facet is presented. The method is based on the characteristic Green's function (CGF) technique. Using separability assumption of the structure and rational function fitting method (RFFM), a closed-form field expression is derived for optical planar waveguide. The uniform derived expression consists of discrete and continuous spectrum contributions which denotes guided and radiation modes effects respectively. An optimization problem is then defined to calculate the exact reflection coefficients at the end-facet for all extracted poles obtained from rational function fitting step. The proposed CGF-RFFM-optimization...

    Abstract
Eelectromagnetic analysis of periodic structures is important in the electromagnetic theory. Among them, the electromagnetic wave scattering analysis from rough surfaces is of importance due to both theoretical and practical points of view. For slow variation periodic surfaces the solution can be obtained under the Rayleigh hypothesis in terms of Floquet modes [1]. Integral equation approaches in combination with the method of Moments are among the most frequently used in the solution of scattering problems related to periodic surface due to their flexibility in modeling different geometries [2-3]. Due to slowly convergence of infinite series periodic Green's function, these methods need...
