Energy Conservation in The Gas Turbines of National Iranian Oil Company Considering Local Operational Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Firouzmand, Vahid (Author) ; Sattari, Sourena (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Low effiencies of equipments and lack of forecasting heat integration in some oil regions are the reasons of primary energy losses in these regions. Also there have been difficulties in providing electric power demands in regions separate from the state electricity network which is a barrier in front of exploiting all the potentials of the region. This research introduces a model that can lead to selection of optimal configuration of equipments and units in order to establish a CCHP system that answers variable electric, heating and cooling demands ensuring a safe margin of power generation. The model simultaneously has the ability to select between existing and new installable equipments....

Patient Allocation and Scheduling in Healthcare

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zahabi, Maryam (Author) ; Shavandi, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the main applications of revenue management is in healthcare industry. By combining these two concepts, subjects such as patient allocation and scheduling and no-show rates were developed in the literature. Up until now, allocation and scheduling were considered separately in the literature. Also, no-show rates were predicted using regression models and data mining tools and these predictions were rarely used in scheduling systems. In this thesis, we combined allocation based on patients’ insurance type with scheduling based on patients’ no-show rates. Also, patients’ no-show rates were predicted and these rates were used in the proposed scheduling model. Firstly, the integrated...

A Solution Approach for Routing of Carriers of Hazardous Materials Problem Based on Risk and Time

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi Ashtiani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the importance of hazardous materials (hazmat) transportation, this problem should be programmed and solved appropriately. Hazardous materials are substances that may endanger the health of humans, animals and the environment. One of the most important parameters in hazmat transportation problem is risk, since other routing researches don’t involve risk as an influencing parameter. In the scientific literature of the transport of hazardous materials, the risk is defined by the calculation of the probability and severity of damage to the endangered recipient through unwanted warnings from hazardous substances. In the model of this research, the accident rate is considered as the...

Optimal Grid Expansion Planning of Iran’s Interconnected Water-Energy Networks with Renewable Energy Technologies Using a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pooladsanj, Milad (Author) ; Nobakhti, Amin (Supervisor) ; Sharifzadeh, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy and water are valuable resources that underpin human prosperity and are to a large extent, interdependent. Water is used in multiple phases of energy production and electricity generation, from fossil-fuel extraction, transport and processing, irrigating crops for biofuels, to providing cooling water for thermoelectric power plants. On the other hand, all such processes, alongside with other industrial and municipal water uses, require sufficient energy required to extract, treat, and deliver water. The key objective of this project is to maximize both water and energy economic potentials while considering the environmental impacts associated with their consumption. In this regard,...

Scheduling the Shifts of Physicians During Covid-19 Pandemic

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dehghani, Saeed (Author) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
People's lives have been affected by the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Due to the high infectivity, governments have screened people, imposed curfews, mandated the use of masks, and so on to reduce the rate of transmission of the disease among people. Meanwhile, infected people are getting treatments: people who are slightly affected are quarantined at home, and those who are heavily affected are treated in hospitals. Hence there is an excessive increase in the hospital workload. On the one hand, this increased workload leads to physical fatigue and, on the other hand, to psychological problems, stress, etc. for the healthcare professionals. Therefore, it is very important to take care of...

Integrating load reduction into wholesale energy market with application to wind power integration

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Vol. 6, issue. 1 , 2012 , p. 35-45 ; ISSN: 19328184 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Renewable energy resources, notably wind power, are expected to provide considerable portion of the world energy requirements in the near future. Many system operators around the world are challenged by the problems associated with integrating these intermittent resources into the grid. As one of the potential solutions, demand response (DR) is expected to play a major role for mitigating integration issues of intermittent renewable energy resources. In this context, this paper proposes a DR program which helps to integrate wind power by reshaping the load of the system. The DR program provides a framework to procure load reduction from DR resources in the wholesale energy market. The...

Minimum cost multiple multicast network coding with quantized rates

    , Article Computer Networks ; Volume 57, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 1113-1123 ; 13891286 (ISSN) Raayatpanah, M. A ; Salehi Fathabadi, H ; Khalaj, B. H ; Khodayifar, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, we consider multiple multicast sessions with intra-session network coding where rates over all links are integer multiples of a basic rate. Although having quantized rates over communication links is quite common, conventional minimum cost network coding problem cannot generally result in quantized solutions. In this research, the problem of finding minimum cost transmission for multiple multicast sessions with network coding is addressed. It is assumed that the rate of coded packet injection at every link of each session takes quantized values. First, this problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem, and then it is proved that this problem is strongly...

Smith normal form using scaled extended integer ABS algorithms

, Article Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing ; Volume 145 AISC, Issue VOL. 2 , 2012 , Pages 367-372 ; 18675662 (ISSN) Golpar Raboky, E ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Classes of integer ABS methods have recently been introduced for solving linear systems of Diophantine equations. The Smith normal form of a general integermatrix is a diagonal integer matrix, obtained by elementary nonsingular (unimodular) operations. Such a form may conveniently be used in solving integer systems of equations and integer linear programming problems. Here, we present a class of algorithms for computing the Smith normal form of an integer matrix. In doing this, we propose new ideas to develop a new class of extended integer ABS algorithms generating an integer basis for the integer null space of the matrix. Finally, we test our algorithms and report the obtained numerical...

    , Article European Journal of Industrial Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 177-198 ; 17515254 (ISSN) Naderi, B ; Salmasi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper focuses on the flow shop sequence dependent group scheduling (FSDGS) problem with minimisation of total completion time as the criterion (Fm|f mls, prmu, S plk|ΣC j). The research problem is formulated in form of two different mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models. Comparing with the latest MILP model for the proposed problem in the literature, the complexity size of the proposed models are significantly reduced. One of the proposed mathematical models is so effective that even medium-sized instances (problems up to 60 jobs in all groups) are solved to optimality in a reasonable amount of time. Moreover, a metaheuristic hybridising genetic and simulated annealing...

    Abstract
Optimal placement of switches can play a key role in providing resilience to power distribution systems against major faults caused by natural disasters. This study presents a resilience-based framework for optimal switch placement in distribution systems being consistent with the expansion plans of distributed generation units. At first, the impact of hurricanes on distribution system components is modelled using the geographic information system of distribution grid and the strength of components against extreme weather-related events. Then, a new resiliency index is proposed to assess the resilience of distribution grids. This index is involved in a mathematical model of the switch...

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 13, Issue 15 , 2019 , Pages 3264-3271 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Izadi, M ; Farajollahi, M ; Safdarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2019
    Abstract
Remote-controlled switch (RCS) placement problem is used to optimally deploy the switches in distribution networks to enhance system reliability. The candidate locations of RCSs are usually assumed at the main feeder while the possible locations on the laterals are ignored. This study studies the impact of considering laterals as potential switch locations and demonstrates that deploying RCSs in laterals would change the optimal number and location of the switches. To do so, this study proposes a mathematical model for the switch deployment problem by taking into account the laterals. The proposed model is formulated in mixed integer linear programming format which can be solved via...

Phase identification of singlephase customers and PV panels via smart Meter data

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 12, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 4543-4552 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Heidari-Akhijahani, A ; Safdarian, A ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
With proliferation of single-phase rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels, phase balancing in low voltage (LV) distribution feeders becomes the point of concern. In this way, identification of the hosting phase of connected single-phase customers and PV panels is a prerequisite. This paper proposes an optimization model for the phase identification problem. The objective is to minimize the summation of the absolute error between estimated and measured variables. Smart meters (SMs) data including active and reactive power absorptions/injections, nodal voltage magnitudes, and network configuration data form the input of the model. Potential errors in the input data are captured in the model while...

Optimized midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling of thermal generating units

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 27, issue. 3 , 2012 , p. 1354-1365 ; ISSN: 08858950 Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses the midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling problem of thermal generating units which is becoming increasingly important due to the aging of power generation fleet. In this context, a novel midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduler is proposed based on decision tree and mixed integer linear formation which explicitly considers the thermal units aging momentum in terms of failure rate. This allows the system operators to determine the thermal units' maintenance outage window based on the cost/benefit analysis of preventive maintenance tasks while optimizing the time interval between consecutive maintenance tasks. Additionally, the division of the year-long...

Stochastic security constrained unit commitment incorporating demand side reserve

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 56 , March , 2014 , Pages 175-184 ; ISSN: 01420615 Sahebi, M. M. R ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Increasing the social welfare and achieving real competitive markets are the main purposes of consumers participation in electricity markets. Hence, Demand Response Programs (DRPs) have been designed to consider the consumers participation. One of these programs named Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) is based on consumers' responses to high electricity prices and to the incentives that are paid by Independent System Operators (ISOs) in the critical hours. In this paper, a model has been proposed for EDRP participation in the Stochastic Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) program. Both the spinning reserve and the demand side reserve, which is modeled as EDRP, are taken into...

    Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to develop a model considering some significant aspects of real-world supply chain production planning approved by industries. To do so, we consider a supply chain (SC) model, which contains multiple suppliers, multiple manufactures and multiple customers. This model is formulated as a fuzzy multi objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming (FMOMINLP) to address a comprehensive multi-site, multi-period and multi-product aggregate production planning (APP) problem under uncertainty. Four conflicting objectives are considered in the presented model simultaneously, which are (i) to minimize the total cost of the SC (production costs, workforce wage,...

Energy-efficient manycast routing and spectrum assignment in elastic optical networks for cloud computing environment

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Volume 33, Issue 19 , July , 2015 , Pages 4008-4018 ; 07338724 (ISSN) Fallahpour, A ; Beyranvand, H ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, we present an energy-efficient manycast routing and spectrum assignment (EEM-RSA) algorithm in elastic optical networks supporting cloud computing applications. The proposed EEM-RSA is adapted for both static and dynamic scenarios. First, an integer linear programing formulation is derived for energy-efficient manycasting and spectrum assignment; then, the corresponding heuristic methods are proposed. To reduce the energy consumption, inactive (idle) elements are turned off, and in the proposed energy-efficient manycasting heuristic, the number of activated elements are minimized. The power consumption of network elements is modeled by considering a constant overhead for the...

Optimal location-multi-allocation-routing in capacitated transportation networks under population-dependent travel times

    , Article International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing ; Volume 29, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 652-676 ; 0951192X (ISSN) Shiripour, S ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Mahdavi, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2016
    Abstract
A capacitated location-multi-allocation-routing model is presented for a transportation network with travel times between the nodes represented by links on the network. The concept of multi-allocation arises from the possibility of allocating the population in a demand node to more than one server node. In normal conditions, travel time between two nodes is a fixed value. However, since the flow of population in a link can affect the travel time, here the impact of the population flow on link time is considered to be simultaneous. This way, distribution of the population over the network has a direct influence on the travel link times. It is assumed that all links are two-way and capacities...

Resource allocation and multicast routing in elastic optical networks

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; Volume 65, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 2101-2113 ; 00906778 (ISSN) Moharrami, M ; Fallahpour, A ; Beyranvand, H ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we formulate an integer linear programming (ILP) to perform multicast routing and spectrum assignment (MRSA) in elastic optical networks, which serves jointly a set of multicast requests. In this formulation, all physical layer restrictions including modulation level assignment, maximum number of multicast capable nodes (MCNs), and maximum splitting degree (MSD) of MCNs, are considered. In addition, we modify the proposed joint ILP to serve multicast requests one-by-one, which is referred to as a separate ILP. Furthermore, we present three heuristic algorithms for MRSA, namely distance-based MRSA (DMRSA), congestion-based MRSA (CMRSA), and mixed CMRSA/DMRSA, which are...
