    Abstract
Recently, isogeometric methodology has been successfully implemented in one-step inverse analysis of sheet metal stamping processes. However, these models are not capable of analyzing forming processes which require severe deformation and/or several forming stages. This paper presents a multi-step inverse isogeometric methodology to enhance the precision of one-step models in predictions of the initial blank, strain distributions, and drawability of the formed parts. This methodology deals with the minimization of potential energy, deformation theory of plasticity, and considering membrane elements. The presented methodology utilizes the NURBS basis functions to create the final, middle, and...

    Abstract
By generalising dictionary learning (DL) algorithms to multidimensional (MD) mode and using them in applications where signals are inherently multidimensional, such as in three-dimensional (3D) inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, it is possible to achieve much higher speed and less computational complexity. In this study, the formulation of the multidimensional dictionary learning (MDDL) problem is expressed and two algorithms are proposed to solve it. The first one is based on the method of optimum directions (MOD) algorithm for 1D dictionary learning (1DDL), which uses alternating minimisation and gradient projection approach. As the MDDL problem is non-convex, the second...

An innovative inverse analysis based on the Bayesian inference for concrete material

    , Article Ultrasonics ; Volume 124 , 2022 ; 0041624X (ISSN) Nouri, A ; Toufigh, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Nondestructive tests and evaluations are robust techniques for inspecting different attributes of concrete configuration. However, most nondestructive techniques focused on an aspect of concrete configuration based on comparison to other samples. In this paper, an innovative inverse analysis technique was developed to inspect different attributes of concrete configuration simultaneously. The methodology was based on the scattering feature of the ultrasonic waves during propagation in heterogeneous media. The transition matrix method was employed to determine the scattered wavefield. This method considers the shape of objects, unlike most other numerical methods. Furthermore, a novel...

    Abstract
An efficient isogeometric-based framework is presented to integrate optimum design and formability analysis of sheet metal forming processes. To assess the quality of the formed parts, several objective functions such as fracture, wrinkling, thickness variation, and stretching are studied. In this framework, geometric parameters of addendum surfaces and middle tools are considered as design variables, the objective functions are calculated using the recently developed one-step and multi-step inverse isogeometric methods, and the optimum design variables are obtained using the genetic global optimization algorithm. The major advantage of employing the inverse methods is to analyze the...

Assessment of optimal reaction progress variable characteristics for partially premixed flames

    , Article Combustion Theory and Modelling ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 797-830 ; 13647830 (ISSN) Chitgarha, F ; Ommi, F ; Farshchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The reaction progress variable is a crucial concept in the advanced flamelet combustion models. As a controlling variable, a well-defined progress variable must consider the essential features of the combustion process. It is usually a heuristically defined linear combination of some major chemical species mass fractions. However, such a simple definition could lead to inaccurate results for the fuel-rich reactive mixtures or complicated fuels, due to the vast number of chemical species in the combustion process. In this paper, a new method for generating a reaction progress variable is proposed through solving a constrained optimisation problem. The proposed method uses a genetic algorithm...

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine ; Volume 227, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 58-71 ; 09544119 (ISSN) Maghsoudi, A ; Jahed, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In percutaneous applications, needle insertion into soft tissue is considered as a challenging procedure, and hence, it has been the subject of many recent studies. This study considers a model-based dynamics equation to evaluate the needle movement through prostate soft tissue. The proposed model estimates the applied force to the needle using the tissue deformation data and finite element model of the tissue. To address the role of mechanical properties of the soft tissue, an inverse dynamics control method based on sliding mode approach is used to demonstrate system performance in the presence of uncertainties. Furthermore, to deal with inaccurate estimation of mechanical parameters of...

Experimental investigation of matrix wettability effects on water imbibition in fractured artificial porous media

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 86-87 , 2012 , Pages 165-171 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Rezaveisi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Rostami, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Spontaneous water imbibition into the matrix blocks is known as the main mechanism for increased oil recovery from naturally fractured oil reservoirs. The rate of oil recovery and its ultimate value is mostly affected by wettability of the rocks and their pore structure. Oil viscosity also greatly influences the rate of oil recovery. A novel experimental model was utilized to study the imbibition mechanism under different wettability conditions. Matrix blocks made from different grain types and size distributions of glass beads were saturated with two different types of synthetic oil, to mimic the oil-saturated matrixes. The wetting characteristic of the models used in this study were...

    Abstract
This paper presents a three-dimensional micromechanical model of brain white matter tissue as a transversely isotropic soft composite described by the generalized Ogden hyperelastic model. The embedded element technique, with corrected stiffness redundancy in large deformations, was used for the embedment of a histology-informed probabilistic distribution of the axonal fibers in the extracellular matrix. The model was linked to a multi-objective, multi-parametric optimization algorithm, using the response surface methodology, for characterization of material properties of the axonal fibers and extracellular matrix in an inverse finite element analysis. The optimum hyperelastic...

    Abstract
In this paper, design and analysis using analytical expressions for the inverse class-E power amplifier (PA) operating at the outside nominal operation, i.e., class- $ ext{E}-{mathrm{n}}$ PA, is presented. This operation is defined as nonzero current switch (n-ZCS) and nonzero-derivative-current switch (n-ZDCS) conditions. The generalized design equations as a function of design specifications, load resistance, and a given dc-supply voltage are derived. Two degrees of the design freedom achieved thanks to n-ZCS and n-ZDCS that are utilized for the simultaneous satisfaction of design specifications, such as peak-switch-voltage and peak-switch-current along with a given load resistance. The...

Directional dependence of extreme metocean conditions for analysis and design of marine structures

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 100 , 2020 Haghayeghi, Z. S ; Imani, H ; Karimirad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Marine structures are typically sensitive to the direction of wind and waves, especially in extreme metocean conditions. The extreme metocean conditions and their associated predicted directions are not easily reachable from traditional design methodologies. In this research, the most probable combinations of different extreme metocean conditions along with their associated direction are predicted for the HyWind Scotland wind farm, Scotland. To achieve this, the Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling approach is applied to define the Joint Probability Distribution Function (JPDF) of four combinations of metocean parameters, including wave direction, wind direction and wind-wave misalignment. The...

    Abstract
As a non-invasive method, photographic imaging techniques offer some interesting potentials for characterization of soil moisture content in unsaturated porous media, enabling mapping at very fine resolutions in both space and time. Although less explored, the wealth of soil moisture data provided by photographic imaging is also appealing for the estimation of unsaturated soil hydraulic parameters through inverse modeling. However, imaging data have some unique characteristics, including high susceptibility to noise, which can negatively affect the parameter estimation process. In this study a sequential data assimilation approach is developed to simultaneously update soil moisture content...

Thermal stability and thermal decomposition steps of ASM were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). An Ubbelhode capillary viscometer and a rheological mechanical spectrometer (RMS) were employed to obtain the specific, relative, and...

Fast and robust LRSD-Based sar/isar imaging and decomposition

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing ; Volume 60 , 2022 ; 01962892 (ISSN) Hashempour, H.R ; Moradikia, M ; Bastami, H ; Abdelhadi, A ; Soltanalian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The earlier works in the context of low-rank-sparse-decomposition (LRSD)-driven stationary synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging have shown significant improvement in the reconstruction-decomposition process. Neither of the proposed frameworks, however, can achieve satisfactory performance when facing a platform residual phase error (PRPE) arising from the instability of airborne platforms. More importantly, in spite of the significance of real-time processing requirements in remote sensing applications, these prior works have only focused on enhancing the quality of the formed image, not reducing the computational burden. To address these two concerns, this article presents a fast and...

    Abstract
We propose a new image recovery method to improve the resolution in microwave imaging applications. Scattered field data obtained from a simplified breast model with closely located targets is used to formulate an electromagnetic inverse scattering problem, which is then solved using the Distorted Born Iterative Method (DBIM). At each iteration of the DBIM method, an underdetermined set of linear equations is solved using our proposed sparse recovery algorithm, IMATCS. Our results demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to recover small targets in cases where traditional DBIM approaches fail. Furthermore, in order to regularize the sparse recovery algorithm, we propose a novel...

    Abstract
This work concerns with experimentally and analytically investigation of free gravity drainage process in porous media under the influence of ultrasonic wave radiation. Glass beads ranges from 70 to 100 mesh sizes were packed and used in the tests. The working fluids consist of distilled water, kerosene and Doroud and Paidar crude oils as wetting and air as non-wetting phase. The measured oil recovery data along with Hagoort (1984) backward methodology were used to determine and to compare the relative permeability of wetting phases in presence and absence of ultrasonic radiation. In addition the relative permeability of non-wetting phases for both cases were calculated from inverse modeling...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop iterative regularization algorithms based on parameter and function estimation techniques to solve two-dimensional/axisymmetric transient inverse heat conduction problems in curvilinear coordinate system. The multiblock method is used for geometric decomposition of the physical domain into regions with patched-overlapped interface grids. The central finite-difference version of the alternating-direction implicit technique together with structured body-fitted grids is implemented for numerical solution of the direct problem and other partial differential equations derived by inverse analysis. The approach of estimating unknown parameters and functions is...
