    , Article Materials Science and Technology (United Kingdom) ; Vol. 30, issue. 1 , January , 2014 , p. 109-115 Pouranvari, M ; Ekrami, A ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University Of Technology
    Abstract
The time required to ensure completion of the isothermal solidification process is the key in obtaining an intermetallic free and robust joint after diffusion brazing. In view of economic considerations, it is interesting to perform bonding process trials using standard heat treatment cycles. This paper addresses the effect of applying the standard heat treatment cycle including homogenisation, solution and double aging treatments on the microstructural and mechanical response of diffusion brazed IN718. A commercial Ni-7Cr-4·5Si- 3?2B-3Fe (wt-%) brazing alloy was used as the interlayer. Results showed that bonds made with the standard homogenisation treatment, at 1100°C, exhibited a eutectic...

    , Article Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures ; Volume 36, Issue 12 , 2013 , Pages 1323-1335 ; 8756758X (ISSN) Farrahi, G. H ; Azadi, M ; Winter, G ; Eichlseder, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, a new fatigue lifetime prediction model is presented for the aluminium-silicon-magnesium alloy, A356.0. This model is based on the plastic strain energy density per cycle including two correction factors in order to consider the effect of the mean stress and the maximum temperature. The thermal term considers creep and oxidation damages in A356.0 alloy. To calibrate the model, isothermal fatigue and out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) tests were conducted on the A356.0 alloy. Results showed an improvement in predicting fatigue lifetimes by the present model in comparison with classical theories and also the plastic strain energy density (without any correction...

    Abstract
Transient liquid phase (TLP) diffusion bonding is a preferred joining/repairing technique for nickel based superalloy. In this research, TLP bonding process carried out according to the standard heat treatment cycles for wrought IN718 base material in order to permit the combining of these two thermal operations. The results showed that the standard solution treatments at 1000 and 1050. °C for 60. min can result in completion of isothermal solidification in IN718/Ni-Cr-Fe-Si-B/IN718 system producing an entirely intermetallic free joint centerline. Two distinct microstructural zones were formed in the bonding affected zone: isothermal solidification zone (ISZ) which consists of single phase...

    Abstract
Paclitaxel as one of the most effective anticancer drugs has low aqueous solubility. This inevitably reveals its commercial formulation in Cremophor EL®/ethanol mixture. However, this formulation leads to several severe side effects such as hypersensitivity reactions, neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Inclusion complexation has been introduced as a practical approach in increasing paclitaxel aqueous solubility. To this end, a hybrid nanocarrier system based on hyperbranched polyglycerol and β-cyclodextrin is designed with key components uniquely structured at nanoscale and evaluated according to medical requirements. Paclitaxel is included in the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrin as guest...

    Abstract
Convection heat transfer below a horizontal, hot, and isothermal strip of infinite length and width of 2L embedded in fluids with different Prandtl number (Pr) and Nusselt number (Nu) is analyzed with the aid of integral method. A new concept is utilized to determine the boundary layer thickness at the strip's edge, which is based on matching the flow rate of the boundary layer below the strip at its edge and the flow rate of the plume, which forms after the heated fluid detaches from the strip's edge. In addition to these novelties, a numerical model is developed to verify the analytical framework, and an excellent agreement is observed between the analytical and numerical models

Isothermal fatigue experiments were conducted at various strain rates. Thermo-mechanical fatigue experiments were carried out at different rates of cooling and heating processes. Numerical results demonstrated a good agreement with experimental data at the mid-life cycle of the material. Material constants for different models were also presented for...

Linear yukawa isotherm regularity for dense fluids derived based on the perturbation theory

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 409 , 2016 , Pages 105-112 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Sohrabi Mahboub, M ; Farrokhpour, H ; Parsafar, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
In the present work, the thermodynamic of dense fluids, both compressed liquids and dense supercritical fluids, has been modeled, solely, based on the contribution of attraction of effective pair potential. The intermolecular interaction is modeled by the hard-core Yukawa potential (HCY) as an effective pair potential (EPP) with temperature dependent hard-core diameter. Using this EPP in the exact thermodynamic relations, an equation of state (EoS) for the compressibility factor of dense fluid has been derived. This EoS shows that (Z - ZCS) as function of ρ1/3 must be linear for each isotherm of fluid where ZCS is the compressibility factor of the reference fluid (Carnahan-Starling (CS) EoS)...

    Abstract
A new two-dimensional dynamic model was developed to simulate asphaltene precipitation, aggregation, and deposition at isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory equation of state was used to model the asphaltene precipitation. Also, novel kinetic models were used to account for the aggregation and deposition of asphaltene particles. The effect of the aggregate size on the rate of aggregation and deposition was studied, and it was concluded that the rate of asphaltene deposition increases, while the concentration of nanoaggregates increases in the well column. The tendency of smaller aggregates to deposit on the surface could be...

Role of base-metal composition in isothermal solidification during diffusion brazing of nickel-based superalloys

    , Article Science and Technology of Welding and Joining ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2018 , Pages 13-18 ; 13621718 (ISSN) Pouranvari, M ; Ekrami, A ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The key feature of diffusion brazing, also referred to as transient liquid phase bonding, is isothermal solidification which precludes the formation of intermetallic in the joint centreline. Analysing the available data published in the literature showed that the composition of the nickel-based superalloys plays a strong role in determining the required time for obtaining intermetallic-free joint during diffusion brazing. This effect is not predictable by the standard conventional models. It is proposed that increasing the boride-forming elements in the base superalloy which promotes in situ boride precipitation at the diffusion-affected zone can accelerate the diffusion flux of the boron...

    , Article Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2018 , Pages 3283-3294 ; 22133437 (ISSN) Raeiszadeh, M ; Hakimian, A ; Shojaei, A ; Molavi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
A series of novel chitosan/nanodiamond (CTS/ND) composites containing NDs with variable surface carboxyl groups and various concentrations were prepared using solution casting method. Powdery CTS/ND composites were employed as the adsorbent of a model anionic dye (methyl orange, MO). Experimental results showed that the incorporation of NDs with high carboxylic content (ND-H) in to CTS increased substantially the maximum adsorption capacity of neat CTS from 167 mg/g to 454 mg/g. The remarkable adsorption capacity of dye on CTS/ND composites was associated to the oxygen-containing groups on the outer surface of NDs which would be beneficial to interact with the dye molecules through hydrogen...

Fast isothermal solidification during transient liquid phase bonding of a nickel alloy using pure copper filler metal: solubility vs diffusivity

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science ; Volume 50, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 2235-2245 ; 10735623 (ISSN) Ghasemi, A ; Pouranvari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Boston  2019
    Abstract
This investigation aims at understanding the underlying fundamentals of the isothermal solidification phenomenon during the transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding process. The isothermal solidification is governed by solid-state diffusion of the melting point depressant (MPD) into the base material, which, in turn, is controlled by both kinetic and thermodynamic parameters; however, the latter factor is generally ignored. In this work, the competition between kinetics and thermodynamics of diffusion were considered in TLP bonding of a nickel alloy, Monel 400, using two distinct filler metals including pure copper (Cu) and Ni-Si-B filler metal. The joint generated by Ni-Si-B filler metal...

    Abstract
To fabricate ceramic/metal complex-shaped part by co-powder injection moulding process (2KPIM), it is essential to tailor the sintering parameters in order to gain a low mismatch shrinkage, i.e. high sintering compatibility. In the present work, nanocrystalline 3Y-TZP and commercial 430L MIM grade stainless steel powders were co-sintered at various sintering cycles. Isothermal and non-isothermal sintering behavior of the individual and composite layers in argon and vacuum atmospheres were examined. High resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis was used to study the bonding interface between the ceramic and metal joints. It is shown...

Conventional vs. temperature-gradient transient liquid phase bonding of stainless steel 304 using a multi-component (Fe–Ni–Mo–B) filler metal

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science ; Volume 53, Issue 11 , 2022 , Pages 4081-4100 ; 10735623 (ISSN) Jabbari, F ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2022
    Abstract
The application of the multi-component Fe-based filler metals (FMs) for transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel has been overshadowed by dissimilar interlayers merely due to their shorter isothermal solidification time. However, the latter usually suffers from low efficiency in terms of mechanical properties even after homogenization of heat treatment. This study shows that by imposing a temperature gradient across the bond line during the TLP bonding process (TG-TLP), it is possible to reduce the isothermal solidification time significantly. This renews the interest in utilizing multi-component Fe-based FMs. In this regard, the TG-TLP bonding process was...

A new look at tensile yielding in isotactic polypropylene: role of strain rate and thermal softening

    , Article Polymer Bulletin ; Volume 79, Issue 12 , 2022 , Pages 11157-11176 ; 01700839 (ISSN) Farahani, M. F ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2022
    Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is a semi-crystalline polymer with a very wide range of industrial applications. This is why its mechanical properties, including yielding, have been the subject of numerous studies. The current study has examined the influence of strain rate and thermal softening on yield stress and post yielding behavior of an isotactic PP. A two-process Ree and Eyring model and the heat equation in adiabatic deformation were coupled with a physical parameter described as the temperature sensitivity of the flow stress at yielding, to simulate the effect of gradual temperature rise in adiabatic heating on yielding behavior. Along with that, tensile bars were subjected to tests at...

On the inability of the moving interface model to predict isothermal solidification time during transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of ni-based superalloys

    , Article Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A: Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science ; Volume 53, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 126-135 ; 10735623 (ISSN) Pouranvari, M ; Ghasemi, A ; Salmasi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2022
    Abstract
Understanding diffusion-induced isothermal solidification time during transient liquid phase bonding is vital in producing intermetallic-free robust joints. The isothermal solidification completion time is overestimated by the existing analytical models, even by the closest one to the real bonding conditions, known as the moving interface model. It was found that the boride formation in the diffusion affected zone of Ni-based superalloy upon using B-containing filler metals is one of the reasons behind the inability of the moving interface model to predict the isothermal solidification completion time accurately, which has received scant attention in the literature. Moreover, simplified...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahangar, Ata Ollah (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This project surveys bioregeneration of granular activated carbons contaminated with phenolic compounds. To carry out this survey, the procedure of phenol absorption on the surface of activated carbon was studied and their adsorption isotherms were calculated. In the first step, newly activated carbon was contaminated with phenol solution and optimum amount of carbon in phenol elimination was 0.5g. Then, the effect of time contact on phenol elimination was studied and eventually 1 hour of time contact was determined as the equilibrium time of phenol adsorption. In the second step, kinetics of adsorption of phenol and different stages of adsorption were studied. The results of this study...

Investigation of Adsorption on Mixed Adsorbents

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Firouzbakht, Behnaz (Author) ; Safe Kordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Adsorption of acetone vapors on mixture of silica gel and activated carbon was studied. Adsorption is defined as the attraction adsorbate (liquid or gas) particles onto the surface of a solid (porous solid). Most of the experimental works are adsorption of a one or more component on an adsorbent. Presence of two or more adsorbents together may effect on adsorption rate, uptake and thermodynamic conditions. When we have limitation in using a kind of adsorbent, these results can be helpful. There are several motivating reasons for the study of adsorption on adsorbent mixtures. During the adsorbent manufacturing process, multiple batches may differ slightly from each other(and from the customer...

    Abstract
Injection molding is one of the most important manufacturing processes for mass production of complex plastic parts. In this study, mold filling is simulated by using the OpenFOAM software for Non- isothermal Newtonian fluid. The OpenFOAM is an open source software that is used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. The studied mold shape has a rectangular structure with a gate for Newtonian fluid injection. The simulation carried out at non-isothermal conditions and two-dimensional flow is considered. The velocity, shear stress and temperature changes in different parts of the mold are critically studied. We show that vortex formation plays an important role on changes of shear stress...
