    Abstract
Alg -(1, 3, 5, 7, 10 vol%) SiC nanocomposites were produced by mechanical alloying (MA) and double pressing/sintering route. The characteristics of the milled powders and the consolidate specimens were examined using high resolution scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction method. Compression and hardness tests were used to study the effect of SiC volume fraction on the strength of Alg -SiC nanocomposites. It was shown that with increasing the SiC volume fraction, finer particles with narrower size distribution and smaller crystallite size are obtained after MA. During sintering close to the melting point of aluminum, the presence of nanometer-scaled SiC particles was found to...

3D adaptive finite element modeling of non-planar curved crack growth using the weighted superconvergent patch recovery method

    Abstract
In this paper, an adaptive finite element analysis is presented for 3D modeling of non-planar curved crack growth. The fracture mechanical evaluation is performed based on a general technique for non-planar curved cracks. The Schollmann's crack kinking criterion is used for the process of crack propagation in 3D problems. The Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator is employed in conjunction with a weighted SPR technique at each patch to improve the accuracy of error estimation. Applying the proposed technique to 3D non-planar curved crack growth problems shows significant improvements particularly at the boundaries and near crack tip regions. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate...

Effect of rapid solidification on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed Al-20Si-5Fe alloys

    Abstract
The aim of this work is to study the effect of cooling rate and subsequent hot consolidation on the microstructural features and mechanical strength of Al-20Si-5Fe-2X (X = Cu, Ni and Cr) alloys. Powder and ribbons were produced by gas atomization and melt spinning processes at two different cooling rates of 1 × 105 K/s and 5 × 107 K/s. The microstructure of the products was examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The particles were consolidated by hot pressing at 400 °C/250 MPa/1 h under a high purity argon atmosphere and the microstructure, hardness and compressive strength of the compacts were evaluated....
