    Abstract
Realistic simulation of tool-tissue interactions can help to develop more effective surgical training systems and simulators. This study uses a finite element and meshless modeling approach to simulate the grasping procedure of a large intra-abdominal organ, i.e. a kidney, during laparoscopic surgery. Results indicate that the accuracy of the meshless method is comparable with that of the finite element method, with root mean square errors in the range of 0.8 to 2.3 mm in different directions. For the model presented in this study, the computational cost of the meshless method was much less than that of the finite element model

    Abstract
This paper deals with the solution of two-dimensional fluid flow problems using the truly meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method. The present method is a truly meshless method based only on a number of randomly located nodes. Radial basis functions (RBF) are employed for constructing trial functions in the local weighted meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method for two-dimensional transient viscous fluid flow problems. No boundary integration is needed, no element matrix assembly is required and no special treatment is needed to impose the essential boundary conditions due to satisfaction of kronecker delta property in RBFs. Three different radial basis functions (RBFs), i.e....

    Abstract
The objective of this research is to study the ability of a meshless method, called finite point method, in solving incompressible fluid flow problems using two stabilization schemes. The main goal of meshless methods is to reduce or remove the cost of grid generation. This issue is implemented using the satisfaction of governing differential equations on a regular or irregular set of nodes by interpolation functions, based on special least-squares approximations. In this research, the finite point method is used to solve the Stokes and the Navier-Stokes equations by employing two different stabilization schemes. In addition, the effects of least-squares approximations are studied. © Sharif...

    Abstract
Due to special characteristics, nowadays functionally graded materials are of great interest of researchers. Continuous change of properties in these materials, decreases undesirable phenomena such as stresscon centration. On the other hand knowing vibration parameters of structures such as natural frequencies, to avoid damage, is important. So far, many researches have been devoted to vibration analysis of structures, such as beams. In this dissertation, free vibration analysis of FGM beams, are investigated, using RKPM, a meshlesh method. The system of equations of motion is derived using Lagrange’s method under the assumption of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Buckling analysis of FGM beams...

Numerical Modeling of a Smooth Notched Tensile Specimen Via Gradient Elasticity Based RKPM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alavi, Ali (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hosain (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, there has been a strong interest in the development of a new class of meshfree methods. As an alternative to the finite element method (FEM), mainly due to elimination of high cost mesh generation processes. In addition, the size effect is currently a subject of increasing interest since it is an important parameter in predicting, correctly, the mechanical behavior of materials with microstructure. It was well established that classical linear elastic continua which neglects the higher order terms is not able to describe size effects. In contrast, enhanced continuum theories such as nonlocal or gradient-dependent models do involve an internal length scale. Thorough this length...

Numerical Modelling of Armour Layer Stability in Low-crested Breakwaters Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Discrete Element Method (DEM)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sarfaraz, Mohammad (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Rubble mound low-crested breakwaters protect the structures and ships in the port against wave attacks. Due to the overtopping, these structures provide a more attractive landscape and helps preserve the port's environment. Stability of low-crested breakwaters relies on the stability of the armor layer against the wave action, requiring the choice of the appropriate diameter for the armour blocks. For cubic armours that are of interest to the designers, there is currently no design relationship, and they inevitably use formulae specified for high-crested breakwaters that may not be in the safe side. The conventional method for determining the required armour diameter for a breakwater is...

Electromagnetic Wave Scattering Analysis Using Meshless Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasani, Ali (Author) ; Shishegar, Amir Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, hybrid meshless method for electromagnetic wave scattering has been presented. The idea of the dissertation is the use of two robust meshless shape functions i.e. MLS and RPIM simultaneously to solve differential and integral equations from 3D scattering equations respectively. Finite element method (FEM) and method of moments (MoM) are used extremely for computing scattering problems. These methods are powerful and their results are accurate enough. One of their disadvantages is the need of mesh generation. Mesh generation in FEM is a time consuming process. Furthermore, in electromagnetic problems that involve geometrical, the use of an underlying mesh creates...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltani Mohammadi, Siavash (Author) ; Mohammdi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, some new models have been solved via RKPM method, which is one of the meshfree methods family. These models have never been solved via meshfree methods and their analytical solutions do not exist. At first, the RKPM shape functions and their first derivative formulation in 1D and 2D have been presented and then by using FORTRAN program, the shape functions and their first derivative have been obtained. To verifying the code some functions have been reproduced. In the next step by using the governing equations and penalty method whose formulation exists in chapter 2; some famous examples in linear elasticity have been solved via RKPM to verify the FORTRAN code. At last; some...

Fully Coupled Numerical Modeling Of CO2 Sequestration in Deep Underground Formations with EFG Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roghangar, Khatereh (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere have multiplied with the increase in fossil fuel consumption, which directly affects global warming. Global warming has other undesirable consequences such as rising sea water level and declining snow cover. To reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, researchers have studied various ways, one of which is carbon dioxide injection into underground formations, which has a significant effect on reducing the amount of these gases in the atmosphere. Existence of high volume underground reservoirs with suitable conditions for gas injection to prevent gas escape has made it a widely used and effective method. Despite many advantages of this method, it...

    Abstract
Due to a rapid growth in the consumption of fossil fuels, the emission of greenhouse gases has multiplied in the atmosphere in the past few decades. This issue can directly affect on the rise of global temperature. Because of the intensification of the global warming, international organizations are looking for ways to reduce the greenhouse effect. One of these methods is injecting and trapping greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, resulting from the operation of power plants and other large industries and preventing it from entering the atmosphere. The injection of carbon dioxide in underground salt water reservoirs can have various effects such as mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, and...

    Abstract
A meshless method called reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is exploited to cope with elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) problems. The idea of arithmetic progression is assumed to place particles within the refinement zone in the vicinity of the crack tip. A comparison between two conventional treatments, visibility and diffraction, to crack discontinuity is conducted. Also, a tracking to find the appropriate diffraction parameter is performed. To assess the suggestions made, two mode I numerical simulations, pure tension and pure bending tests, are executed. Results including J integral, crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD), and plastic zone size and shape are compared with...

    Abstract
A local radial basis function (RBF) meshless method is applied for solution of the Burgers' equation with different initial and boundary conditions of various complexities. Local-RBF collocation is employed for discretization in space, whilst the unsteady term is handled via a simple explicit time discretization. Moreover, in case of non-smooth initial conditions with high Reynolds numbers, a treatment is proposed for inability of local-RBF methods to solve such problems. The scheme is validated over a variety of benchmark problems and very good agreement is found with existing analytical and numerical solutions

A numerical solution of 2D Buckley-Leverett equation via gradient reproducing kernel particle method

    , Article CMES - Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences ; Volume 32, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 17-33 ; 15261492 (ISSN) Mohamadi Shodja, H ; Hashemian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Gradient reproducing kernel particle method (GRKPM) is a meshless technique which incorporates the first gradients of the function into the reproducing equation of RKPM. Therefore, in two-dimensional space GRKPM introduces three types of shape functions rather than one. The robustness of GRKPM's shape functions is established by reconstruction of a third-order polynomial. To enforce the essential boundary conditions (EBCs), GRKPM's shape functions are modified by transformation technique. By utilizing the modified shape functions, the weak form of the nonlinear evolutionary Buckley-Leverett (BL) equation is discretized in space, rendering a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations...
